Any FCS players expected to go in today's rounds? Any strong possibilities? Any he just mights? xlolx

While he was just FCS for one year, Noah Spence should go early tonight. My bet is 3rd pick of the night to the Cowboys. Spence really seems to have cleaned up his act and is likely the next FCS guy off the board. Glad we had him for a year but I hate the thought of having to watch the Cowboys to see him play on Sundays.

Here's something to look at:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/nfl-draft-scout/25563348/nfl-draft-non-fbs-top-50-draft-board

I'd guess Noah Spence in the 2nd and one or two of the DBs. I'd love to see Joe Haeg go tonight.

That would be great but knowing Hunter Henry is on the board and Dallas loves those former pigs and actually uses tight ends he will probably go. Just my opinion though.

So who will go third out of FCS? According to Hero Sports, it'll be South Carolina State's Javon Hargrave. Boy was he off with Noah Spence going 17th.

SC State DT Javon Hargrave to Pittsburgh at 89 overall.

Yes, Bradberry was a reach. I think late 2nd was a bit high. I could have seen him as a good 4th rounder even but I don't know of anyone else who had him ahead of Killebrew, DHC, and Hall from the teams I talked to.

I had him as a 4th round projection and Killebrew as a 3rd-4th. I also had Smith and Hill in the 4th as well. I'm not shocked. If they are all not gone by the middle of the 5th I'll be surprised though.

Please correct if you see inaccuracy. I am relying on the info from one of our assistant coaches, but I believe he is correct. Also this is the second year in a row that Samford has had a player drafted before the Auburn Tigers - quite a statement for a State of Alabama FCS program.

Kinda interesting, Vernon Adams didn't get drafted, but to the best of my knowledge he hasn't signed anywhere either.

Teams are making a mistake in not drafting him, IMO, especially since it's apparently due to lack of size. Adams isn't quite as good as Dave Dickenson, but the unfair slighting is similar. Dickenson finished as by far the highest rated passer in the history of the CFL and yet nobody in the NFL really gave him a chance. NFL teams are also passing out of the shotgun more these days so the whole "can't see over the O-Line" argument is even worse than it already was.

JSUSoutherner

Yeah, the size argument for Vernon is pretty dumb. He's the same size as Russell Wilson and Drew Bree's and they seem to manage just fine.

I read he's trying out at the Seahawks. He will probably make the roster considering Wilson is currently the only QB on the Seahawks roster.

The opinions on Vernon are all over the map. There's been more than a few people that have called him maybe one of the best quarterbacks in this class, and then he goes unsigned. Not one NFL team wanted to sign him?

I went back and watched a game of his at Oregon last week to try and peg my own opinion. 1. The height is an issue. It is with all shorter quarterbacks. It can be overcame see JSU's examples. One thing I saw a lot of was Adams jumping straight up in the air to make dump passes over his line. That doesn't seem like a wise idea in the NFL with the DEs you're going to face. Seems like a good way to get killed. 2. Whenever they asked him to step back and read the defense he always seemed jumpy and unsure what he wanted to do until it broke down and he either took a sack or ran around and usually to his credit would make a play. I just have some serious concerns his game wouldn't translate to the NFL.

Doug Flutie & Jeff Garcia didn't really have any problems.

Shorter quarterbacks can be successful, but taller quarterbacks have two advantages. They can see over the line easier and see the field better and they also usually have a higher release point and usually less batted balls.

Saying VA can't succeed solely on height isn't fair, but saying height has no effect on a quarterbacks game is also unfair.

Oh, I'm not denying there's an effect. It's just that the effect seems to be fairly small and good short QBs can easily overcome it.

Sorry folks, I had a busy weekend. I'll get the original post updated momentarily with the 4th-7th rounds. I think I saw 20 FCS players were drafted. I'm not sure how that compares to past years.

What's the knock on LeCompte?

Kinda thought he'd be a lock to get signed.

Hmm... If you're going to write off a punter because of height alone, I would suggest looking at an upgrade at your long snapper. Just sayin.

I am also very interested in how height affects the quality of an NFL punter/kicker

I wouldn't have thought it was a big deal but I'm sure that is what I read. Teams want a prototypical size for punters or some such nonsense. For example the guy rated ahead of him from SHSU was 6' 5" 205. Also obviously a talented player but i didn't think heads above ben.

I just checked a couple rosters and the Bills punter is 5'10". A couple other were 6'. Obviously a taller punter is a bigger target for the snapper, but I'd need more than just that to write him off. Hang time, yards, quickness of delivery, and accuracy would be my main focus on punters. I would assume one of those areas must be a concern, and it shouldn't be accuracy.

He's back to 100% and he tried out in front of scouts at both the JMU and Duke scouting visits.
It's been 24 hours since the end of the draft, so it's both concerning and perplexing that a player featured on college gameday can't even get a tryout offer.

I heard he wasn't signed following camp. Doesn't mean he won't, but it gets less and less likely as we get further along. I'm kind of shocked the CFL draft didn't take any quarterbacks. JMO, but this quarterback class is really deep and I think some guys like Lee, Adams, Woodrum, and D Williams may not get a shot even in a training camp. Might as well make the CFL a go, IMO.

We are looking at 4QB's x 10teams = 40 QB's that they keep around. Some of these guys will get a chance in Canada as camp arms. What they make of it, no one knows.

Fargo, ND - Former NDSU punter Ben Lecompte tweeted that he has signed a contract with the Chicago Bears.LeCompte attended Bears rookie mini-camp this past weekend and was scheduled to tryout for the Vikings.

While at NDSU, LeCompte was a two-time FCS all-american and finished with the fourth best punting average in FCS history.

I guess my point is this was a deep QB class, IMO. The NFL drafted 15 quarterbacks. Guys like Vad Lee, Stephen Rivers, Ammon Olson, Vernon Adams, and Dalyn Williams are struggling to find a job even as a camp arm in the NFL. JMO, but these guys probably would have been more sought after in a leaner year. It would make sense for some of these guys to make a go of it up north. However, most kids are going to expire every attempt at the NFL first, simply because of the huge pay they could get.

Here's an interesting number. 864 players are going to be cut from NFL rosters in the weeks leading up to the season. That's a lot of football players. The CFL is in full swing by that point. Just spitballing but it may make sense for the CFL to have a supplemental draft shortly after the NFL season gets under way. Even a four round draft would give these teams some extra players that damn near made the NFL.

Eh, that graphic is so flawed. Compare Fcs to fbs for a true apples to apples.
Comparing the entire Fcs to only four of the five G5 conferences while calling it fbs and not including the P5.
Fcs also had 20 drafted, not 11.
Talk about cherry picking.
How many did the southland have drafted? That would be the real number.

tribe_pride

Why include the Service Academies? You look petty that way especially considering that everyone (including the teams) knows that you have to get a special exemption not to have to serve right out of school and that is not easy to get (though I thought I heard that one player may be able to get this year). You don't go to the Service Academies to play professional sports after graduation.

And for some reason, they did not include the AAC in their comparison. I wonder why.

It's just a hype graphic. Colleges put this kind of stuff out all the time. NDSU posts how many victories we have the past 5 years vs. all other D1 programs. Everyone with a 10 cent head and above knows we wouldn't have any where near this many with Alabama's schedule.

Here's another fun stat NDSU draft picks signed contracts that combine for more than any other college outside of Alabama, Ohio State, Florida, and Ole Miss. Does that mean we are better at recruiting than all these schools? No, we just got real fortunate with one really high pick. It's a fun stat tho.
