SU construction to start in January

Southern University’s massive construction project for stadium expansion and new housing and intramural facilities is ready to begin next month, university officials said.

The $60 million bonds sold, giving the institution the money necessary to begin construction, said Ernie Hughes, executive director for the Southern University System Foundation.

Construction will begin in mid-January first for a new 600-bed dormitory at the Baton Rouge campus, he said. The Mumford Stadium expansion is set to begin in March to add 3,500 seats and new offices, lockers and weight rooms.

The new Student Intramural Sports Complex, also beginning construction in March, will include a swimming pool, locker rooms and basketball and racquetball courts.

The project also includes a new baseball field house for the main campus and the purchase of a facility previously being leased for the Shreveport campus.

As Southern University football coach Pete Richardson marches along the recruiting trail this winter — with kicker/punter, running back and linebacker atop the wish list — he can finally, confidently, promise each child that the program has a solid future.

A huge victory came Wednesday for a program that has been at a recruiting disadvantage, throughout the state and the Southwestern Athletic Conference, for years — despite the success of Richardson, the second-best coach in school history.

The school’s package of $60 million in bonds has been sold, SU Sytem Foundation Executive Director Ernie Hughes confirmed. The money provides for the construction of a new dorm for the Baton Rouge campus, a new baseball field house and an intramural sports complex for students and the purchase of a building that the Shreveport campus has been renting.

However, the bell cow to the whole deal is the expansion (and improvements) to A.W. Mumford Stadium.

Southern and Grambling seem like 2 teams that could easily be in I-A and making a ton more money.

What's the point of being I-AA if you're not going to go to the playoffs?

Southern University freshman Damian Walker looks forward to the day he can walk out of his on-campus apartment on his way to a football game at the expanded A.W. Mumford Stadium. Maybe he will even stop to shoot some hoops at the Intramural Sports Complex.

A bevy of long-planned Southern facilities projects, with the centerpiece being the stadium expansion, are finally set to begin this month starting with construction of four apartment buildings in the northwestern corner of the campus.

“It’s about time,” said Walker of Mobile, Ala., who is eager to move out of Jones Hall freshman male dormitory. “They’re finally putting all that money to use.”

The plan is to impress campus visitors with modern facilities, said Ernie Hughes, executive director for the Southern University System Foundation, which is leading the financing.

I've said this before as well. Apparently, its the stadium size minimum that is the big sticking point.

Great news and good luck with the construction. I hope they stay closer to their timeline than Cal Poly did on theirs. The picture below is at mid-season and as you can see it was nowhere near completed. The good thing is that it was worth the wait as I am sure SU's will be when completed.
