That's what happens when you finish in the bottom 2 or 3 o the league. If VMI won the league then you would see 12-15 players on the list. It makes sense though. Shouldn't the top 3-4 teams have most of the players on the list?

that is usually the case.....but for these two young men, the stats speak for themselves......and all-conf. honors are about the "individuals"......

They do have good numbers but who on the list would you drop? Meaning take away stats and tell me who is the better football player in general. Stats can be misleading. For the record, I just did my All-SoCon list and I have 1 VMI guy on the 2nd team defense. I put one of the LBs. When you put a list like this together though you compare player to player and sometimes the success of a team will dictate who voters put on a list.

I did my own list and only had one VMI linebacker on the second team and my reasoning was although they had gaudy stats there were a lot more plays run against VMI then against UTC or Furman.

More plays run=more opportunities for tackles

That isn't saying they aren't good football players but the stats must be taken in context.

UTC Linebacker Josh Cain put up otherworldly numbers 15 years ago for the Mocs but our defense was terrible. He would have had good numbers on a better defense but he wouldn't have put up numbers like he did.

I would have bet the mortgage Matt Shiel was the 1st team punter... Not even on this list.

For what it's worth I had Matt Shiel as my first team punter. He had a fantastic year.

Mercers kicker....not on my list :)

The chart above lays out the Media and Coaches team by team and selection category by category. In these numbers, if a FR was on the All-FR Team and also on the Coaches 1st or 2nd Team at the same position, that player is only included once (in the 1st or 2nd team - not in the FR Team totals). If they were included at different positions (Quinlan Washington, CIT...for example) I counted them 2x. Which brings up an interesting anomaly...how is Mr. Washington the Coaches 1st Team Return Specialist, but not on the FR Team in that role? Always some strangeness around these selections.

Speaking of strangeness, I find it most interesting that Mercer was the only SoCon Team to defeat the Conference Champion and either beat or scared the bejeezus out of every other SoCon team (including Samford - who trailed most of the game...despite the final score), yet NOT 1 SINGLE PLAYER ON MERCER's TEAM (other than the Punter - who was rightfully recognized as 1st Team by the Media, but scorned by the Coaches) was worthy of 1st Team All SoCon recognition...despite the Offense being #3 in Scoring and in the Top 1/2 of the Conference in Total Offense, Rushing Offense, and Passing Offense (Tied 4th) AND the Defense being #3 in Scoring and in the Top 1/2 of the Conference in Total Defense, Rushing Defense, and Pass Defense Efficiency.

Just my opinion, I don't think Mercer scared the bejeebuz out Samford.

A) Looks like you started dipping into the Thanksgiving sherry and elderberry wine a bit early...AND

B) There was an awful lot of puckering of body parts and gnawing of fingernails on the Sammy sideline...right up until this happened in the 4th quarter...

4th and 8 at MER28
Matt Shiel punt 49 yards to the SAM23, Kelvin McKnight return 77 yards to the MER0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 11:58

...so yeah, maybe the Bullpups did have about 12 minutes of the game where their bejeezus's were firmly tucked away, but the other 48 minutes...Red & Blue Bejeezuses all over 5 Star Stadium in Maconga.

I don't disagree that it was a close game early. It just didn't stay a close game.

You know, an excellent TE (now an Attorney, BTW), who played for the Paladins, once told me, while we were debating some 'important' issue across a table in the Charles E. Daniel Dining Hall, that I had "an amazing grasp of the obvious." I know now what he meant by that and exactly how he was feeling when he said it. That said, your statement is completely inaccurate. It was not "a close game early." It was a close game for 48 minutes. That means 80% of the game had been played when it was became no longer a close game. Do you consider it "early" in a round of golf when you are on the 15th hole? C'mon man...

Great list, thanks for organizing that. I too was shocked at how Mercer was treated. Zero first team selections from the coaches. The only team to receive zero. That's a slap in the face. As you mentioned, Mercer has filled up the stat sheet on both sides of the ball. Is it because Mercer is the new team on the block? I know win/loss record is a big factor (as it should be). Gotta just take it in stride and keep pressing toward next year!!
