Basing my assessment strictly off stats, but Holmes seems to be in the drivers seat for Def PoY.

Basing my assessment strictly off stats, but Holmes seems to be in the drivers seat for Def PoY.

Miller the CB and Spence from EKU are the two most talented of that top 5 but with the history of Montana DEs and the stats Holmes has put up it is easy to see why people will say he is the front runner. This award is stat driven and his stats do indeed seem to be driving the train.

I almost did. One more good game and he definitely goes on.

No sure why FU's trio is being overlooked, but that's fine, I think they'll get more attention once SOCon season starts this saturday.

Carl Rider LB (5 games) 53 total tackles - 25 solos - 28 asst - 5 tackles for loss
Cory Magwood LB (5 games) 52 total tackles - 24 solos - 28 asst - 1.5 tackles for loss
* Trey Robinson S (5 games) 43 total tackles - 22 solos - 21 asst - 4 INTs - 2 Break Ups 6 passes defended (I really don't understand how Trey isn't getting any attention, no pre season mentions) I have an asterisk next to Trey, IMO as much as I love Rider/Magwood Trey is the key to the FU back seven.

4 carries for 7 yards against NDSU....14 carries for 24 yards against Drake...would probably like to see a bit more consistency before I would toss him up as a fresh POY.

I don't know which player to put in yet. I like all 3. I was going to let them play it out two more weeks and pick one. One of them will be on there once they separate themselves. Trey does seem to be the one who could get that attention with 4 INTs already.

This stuff is so early and much of it will play itself out.

I'll give the benefit of the doubt on Trey and a couple others for stepping up. Did not add the UND RB but have added a few more names.

BRANDON BRYANT #33 LAFAYETTE COLLEGE - This kid continues to produce, leads in solos and 6th in totals,, he is definitely a thumbper, reacts quickly and understands the Big picture on the defensive scheme. Take a look and see for yourself.. 13 and a sack against Will N Mary, 18 and a .5 sack against U. of Del. 16 and a 1 sack against Fordham..

As much as it may pain college football fans to admit it, with Villanova QB John Robertson out for the season, you should probably drop him from the watch list.

Noah Spence is the best Defensive player at this time.

Mark Iannotti for SIU--still sixth in total offense nationally (352 ypg)--and third if you consider only those QBs who have played four games not five

9th in passing efficiency (163.3) in the nation and hitting on 73% of his passes/ 17th in nation in passing per game (4 games he is sixth)/ 15th in points responsible for but is not sniffing any list cause his team is 1-3

Vad Lee has some good numbers as far as yards and TDs are concerned, but damn 10 INTs already?

Also I obviously have some bias, but Diondre Hall has been a beast so far this year. Doing it mostly with one hand too.

I haven't seen him play so I won't say you're wrong, but if you compare his numbers with Holmes', it's not really close...

One tends to follow the other. I can assure you Holmes isn't racking up those numbers because he's playing poorly.

Spence will be a first round draft pick if he come out early. So far he is close to unblockable.
Holmes is an excellent player but to me slightly behind Spence.

Vad Lee threw 5 of those int. in one game, home against Albany. Some of the passes were thrown right to Albany DBs. He also may have had his worst game running with 72 yard. That being said, he still managed to put up 275 yard passing for total offensive production of 347. His 4 1st half interceptions kept Albany in the game for the 1st half, 14-14; however, the game was never in doubt from early in the 3rd quarter on. His performances against JMU's two toughest opoents so far, SMU and Stony Brook were superb. Living on the East Coast, I see way more FCS football in our region, but it is hard to imagine any other offensive player having a better season than VL to this point in the 2015 season. He's also leading his team to wins, something that should be critical when selecting POY honors. I did see Kupp against Oregon, his performance was epic! However, a WR is at a big disadvantage against a QB in POY. A QB controls the tempo of the game, and has way more opportunities to effect the outcome; particularly a true dual threat guy like Vad Lee.

I wasn't saying he wasn't great or not deserving. That number was just striking to me. 10 picks in 5 games is a ton! That is 2 per game. Some QBs on the list don't have 5 on the season and he threw that many in 1 game. If he had cut that number down it wouldn't even be close he would be running away with it. As it stands he needs to improve the turnovers. It will be a matter of time before it does cost his team a win.

In reference to the Albany game.. at least 3 of those were not his fault. 1 was thrown on a play where the entire D-line was offsides, but no flag came out. He just lobbed up a jump ball thinking it was a free play. Another bounced off a ref who stepped in front of the passing lane, and the third bounced off his WR's chest.

Overall he does throw into coverage a bit more than needed, but it's part of his game and I'd hate to take away that confidence and mess him up.

I agree, if he throws 5 interceptions against Richmond ot W&M, or in a playoff game, the dukes are likely to lose. I just don't think he is going to have another game even remotely like that.

I remember at least two of those picks going unimpeded into the arms of DBs. It was by far the worst CAA game I've seen Vad play out of the 4 I've attended during his JMU career, and that's both his passing and rushing. But you don't have to sell me on Vad Lee, I think he is an incredible talent and my intent on posting was to advocate for him as being number one candidate for offensive POY at this point in the season. I'm neither a JMU fan nor a detractor. totally neutral. Bridgeforth is just a nearby place for me to see some great CAA match-ups!

Keep an eye on Kade Harrington of Lamar. He is tearing it up and likely to be added very soon on my list. I'm going to deliver an update in the next 3 or 4 days.

Sam Houston State is getting strong play from their punter and CB Everett. Both of them have become legit NFL prospects.

Idaho State DT Tyler Kuder is another name rising on my lists.

William & Mary LB Luke Rhodes is going to be replaced fully by their DB DHC after seeing them both live and in person. Rhodes may go higher in the draft than he should because of his tools but he is not playing like an All-American at all right now.

Liberty QB Josh Woodrum is getting mid round buzz from NFL sources but I have him as a 7th-PFA instead of a 3-5 like some scouts have him.

Campbell DE Ugonna is looking better this year and is likely to get a combine invite if he can have a couple more big games.

The play of Haeg and Carson Wentz at NDSU has been pretty strong. They are definitely going to the Combine and both will likely end up in the Senior Bowl.

Southern Utah has 3 strong defenders in Cowser, Sims, and Killebrew. At least two of them will get drafted and Killebrew is a lock for the Senior Bowl.
