View Full Version : Most Frustrating Loss?

What are some of your teams most frustrating losses you can think of in your lifetime? This discussion started in a bad weather thread on the UNH fanboard and it became pretty fun to look back on those games. While UNH has had some amazingly awesome wins over the last 15 years or so, there have been some equally bad losses that just seemed to be the football gods against us:

UNH loses to Northeastern in OT 2006 - A heavily favored UNH team falls behind only to score with 1 second left and send it to overtime. UNH scores first, then Northeastern scores a TD on 4th and 20...Coach Mac takes a timeout to ice Northeasterns kicker and when they have a chance to think about it, they go for 2 and get it.

UNH loses to URI 2010 - Heavily favored UNH is up 2 scores in the fourth qtr only to give up a ridiculous TD with 3 mins left and then a strip sack fumble for a TD (literally no need to be passing the ball...) on the next drive gives URI the win. UNH had a great team that year, no business losing that game. That one ruined my weekend.

UNH loses to Lehigh in 2013 - UNH needed to get back to its winning ways in the beginning of the year and just played like crap against Lehigh. Just a huge disappointment considering the talent UNH had compared to Lehigh. UNH rebounded and made it to the semis that year though

2014 against Illinois State - In what seemed like a team destined for glory, UNH dominated for 3 qtrs only to run out of gas and succumb to injuries. A 4th qtr rally gives the redbirds the W. It really felt like UNH should have won that one and that ISU stole it at the end. Probably some extra frustration considering it was for a ticket to Frisco.

A few more over the years that were frustrating. But these stick out in my mind.

Jerome Simpson - Super Safety. Cost Coastal it's first playoff spot.

CCU's "Super Safety" vs. Charleston Southern University

WR Jerome Simpson lined up on 4th Down as the punter on a play designed to be a fake punt as well as a play where Simpson would simply scramble around to waste time, and then take a safety. Simpson stepped out of bounds at the 4yd. line with something like 4 seconds left on the clock. This gave CSU enough time to score a TD and send the game into overtime. CCU lost the game (and the playoffs) in the second overtime.

Check http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/mld/myrtlebeachonline/sports/colleges/coastal_carolina_university/13216276.htm for more.

:(

Playoff Committee chair Roachel Laney says on I-AA WAVES that if CCU wins that game they would be in the playoffs (for the first time and give the Big South Conference their first playoff team)... :bang:

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Hurt all the worse watching JMU go on to win the title.

2011 Senior Day at Indiana State for the group of kids that turned an ugly program back to some level of respectability. The coaches were told with a win against SIU they would be in the playoffs; not to be with a frustrating loss when they couldn't complete a second half comeback.

Where to begin.....

--Losing to NAIA Sioux Falls in 2009 at home by 15 points and it really wasn't even that close.

--Or maybe it was when UND beat Sioux Falls at home two years later on a last second FG (miss it and they lose - again). Does that qualify as a loss?

McNeese72

I can think of two of them that are close to the same.

First one, I thought of was the 1998 first round playoff game with UMass which McNeese lost 21-19 at home. It is known to most McNeese fans as the "Dropped Pass" game. We dropped 6 passes, 3 of which would have been TD's and eventually lost by 2 points. UMass went on to win the NC that year.

Second one I thought of was the 1997 championship game with YSU.

For me (a Bison fan):

#1 Losing the 1984 D2 National Championship to Troy University on a 50-yard FG after having some great opportunities to put the game away.
#2 Losing to Eastern Washington in OT to end the 2010 playoff run.
#3 Losing to Northwest Missouri State in the 1997 playoffs after the ref called back a pick 6 on an inadvertent whistle.

October 1st, 2015, 09:36 AM
After scoring a last minute TD to take the lead on Missouri State by 2 last year, the Bears allowed the Missouri State team to drive down to the UCA 43 where with 3 seconds left the field goal kicker put it inches over the crossbar from 53 yards. We went from the highest of highs to WTF!

But then again not long before that we traveled to Mo. State and threw a last second TD to beat them at their place...so I guess payback is fair.

For Harvard, I thought of about six:

1. 1972 -- Yale 28, Harvard 17 -- my freshman year H-Y game at home. Harvard had the lead at the half, capped by an inspirational goal-line stand, but Dick Jauron just ground out yards in second half as Yale pulled away.

2. 1981 -- Yale 28, Harvard 0 -- Harvard absolutely sucked in miserable conditions at the Bowl.

3. 1982 -- Penn 23, Harvard 21 -- Harvard came back from 20-0 deficit to take 21-20 lead in 4th quarter. Penn kicker misses field goal at the end, and Harvard starts to celebrate. But wait -- phantom flag for roughing the kicker (the kid took a dive) gave Penn a second chance, which they made. Hated Penn ever since.

4. 1985 -- Princeton 11, Harvard 6 -- Leading 6-3 late in 4Q, and buried deep in its own end, Harvard takes a safety. Princeton's Tom Urquhart (never forgot that name) ran the ensuing free kick back for a TD.

5. 2000 -- Cornell 29, Harvard 28 -- Harvard blew 28-0 halftime lead and lost to Cornell in regulation.

6. 2012 -- Princeton 39, Harvard 34 -- This one probably hurt the worst. Harvard led 34-10 with less than 13 minutes to go and choked.

Hands down for me has to be the 2013 University of Richmond loss to N C State in Raleigh on a last second 51 yard field goal. I am a NCSU alum, my kids grew up Wolfpack fans and my son started on defense for U OF R that year and that day. To lose that game on a field he grew up watching games against his childhood favorite team, it was painful. Childhood dream to play on that field. Its a loss you carry the rest of your life. If you care about the game its not a loss you get over easily, if at all.

Before it folded, UNH actually had back to back losses to Northeastern in 06 and 07, during the Santos and Ball era. 06 was incredibly frustrating, but 07 was also frustrating. In the pouring rain, Northeastern just kept running the ball and UNH couldnt stop it. They won by 20 or so in Durham, which doesnt happen often since 2004. Considering how bad Northeastern was at the end, and how good UNH was, looking back at those losses are absolute head scratchers. Goes to show you how tough conference play actually is.

We've had a good run for awhile, bulldog. But there were a lot of tough times in the 80's and 90's. We lost 11 in a row to Cornell -- Cornell!! -- at one stretch back then, and we lost to Columbia in '95. And Penn beat us about 11 straight times in Philly before we finally snapped that streak in '04. There's no more obnoxious Ivy fan in the world than a Penn fan.

Semi Finals at home 2012 and 2013...ugh ugh.

EWU down to SHSU 35-0 after literally the worst half of football played in decades by a powerful EWU offense. Frantically scoring 28 points in the 3rd quarter, and losing by a field goal to end the game. The worst part was the fans booing the team to end the season, that's our own fault though.

EWU being up in the 4th by 10 points to Towson and lil shoota' missing a 2 yard 4th down pass to a wide open Kupp for the winning first down and then letting Towson's backup QB go 80 yards in the remaining 45 seconds to score the winning touchdown was probably the worst.

#1 - 2011: Eastern Kentucky 52 Jacksonville State 42. JSU led 48-24 with 7:00 left in the game, put backups in. EKU proceeds to score 28 points in five minutes. JSU gets the ball back with a minute left and drives it down to the 2. EKU stuffs Washaun Ealey on the last play of the game. A win would have given JSU the OVC title outright. Instead, they finished in a three-way tie with EKU and Tennessee Tech...missing the playoffs. The school still claims it as a shared conference championship, which is pitiful considering they lost to both EKU and TTU. Also, I parked under a tree and my car was covered in bird poop afterwards.

#2 - 2010: Tennessee Tech 35 Jacksonville State 24. JSU led 24-7 with 11:00 left over a 4-6 TTU team. Tennessee Tech proceeds to score 28 unanswered points in ten minutes. The loss cost JSU the OVC title.

#3 - 1989: Mississippi College 3 Jacksonville State 0. MC wins the D-II National Championship on a FG in the snow. The championship is later rescinded due to rules violations by MC. Officially, no one won the D-II National Championship in 1989.

2010 - Eastern Washington paying off the most inept conglomeration of officials to ever manage a chain gang, who then spotted a ball well short, allowing EWU to steal a national title from UD. A few that I can remember off the top of my head:

2014 - vs North Dakota State (http://espn.go.com/ncf/recap?id=400557479) - At Homecoming, after leading the #1 ranked (and 3-time defending FCS champion) Bison 10-3 into the fourth quarter, Western gave up 14 points for a 17-10 NDSU victory

2014 - vs Illinois State (http://espn.go.com/ncf/recap?id=400557486) - Western up 26-7 late in the 3rd quarter, gives up a TD near the end of the 3rd and 24 points in the 4th eventually losing 37-34 on a last second FG.

2002 - vs Western Kentucky (playoffs) (http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/schedule/_/id/2710/year/2002/western-illinois-leathernecks)...the infamous "sledgehammer game" (http://www.westerncourier.com/wku-player-dismissed-from-team-for-using-sledgehammer-in-brawl/article_4a533bff-8bbb-555b-8924-35d3288936b1.html) - After defeating WKU 14-7 earlier in the season (at WKU), going 10-1 through the regular season, and demolishing Tony Romo's EIU Panthers 48-9 in the first round of the playoffs, Western Kentucky came into Macomb and after a long, rough, very heated game and a close WKU victory, a fight broke out involving many players, helmets being thrown, and the WKU "symbol" sledgehammer being swung around. Players were dismissed and suspended, and this game was the reason that all Gateway/MFVC football games for a long time following started with the entirety of both teams meeting together on the field for full-team handshakes. WKU would go on to win the National Championship that year.

Anderson's miss was what stopped me from watching a Vikings games for years. I

watched every SB defeat with the exception of the Kansas City game. I bled purple through my adult years. I even was willing to accept Gary Cuozzo and Wade Wilson as starting QBs. I was a kid for the Hail Mary, still think it was a penalty; but it was the Cowboys and at least I saw them as a deserving team.

That Atlanta team was a joke. It should have been a MN v Denver SB that year. I'm finally back to watching the Vikings play now and then. Still not a big fan anymore. I pretty much stick to College FB now days.

1992 vs YSU in the semis
2005 vs ASU Championship game
2007 vs UD in the Quarters
2008 vs Richmond in the semis
2005 vs App State - title game. Had lead in the 4th. Strip sack from behind returned for a TD for ASU to win (16-21)
2006 @ Iowa State - missed a 57 yard field goal just inches wide (26-27)
2006 vs North Dakota - lost to a non D1 and the banner mishap (31-35)
2007 vs Delaware - only loss and in quarters. Corey Lewis ran crazy of UD the 1st quarter and we stopped running the ball. Joe Flacco couldn't be sacked, even with 7 guys on him (27-39)
2008 vs Richmond in the semis. Had a 20-13 lead with ball and 2 min left. 3 straight run plays (with UR had 3 TOs) led to a shanked punt leaving UR only 55 yards to go for a score...and they did with 13 seconds left (20-21)
2009 @ Iowa - only time in NCAA history two field goals were blocked, on consecutive plays, as time expired. (16-17)
2009 @ Illinois State - took last minute lead and then gave it up to end the season. knocked UNI out of playoff race last game of the season (20-22)
2010 @ Iowa State - score wasn't close but over 120 more yards of offense than ISU. Played musical QBs and ended up with 2 pick 6s thrown. ISU defense scored more than their offense. (0-27)
2011 @ Iowa State - ISU WR gets a knee in by 1/4 of an inch with 19 seconds left to score the go ahead TD with 19 seconds left (19-20)
2012 @ Youngstown State - there's still at least 1 second left on that clock with UNI at the 11 yard line going in. (35-42)
2013 @ NDSU - domination for 58 minutes. Than an iffy hands to the face, broken leg to an All American LB, and a completely phantom PI call in the span of 4 plays gives NDSU the winning TD (23-24)
2013 @ SIU - OT loss, giving up late lead (31-34)
2013 vs South Dakota - 2OT loss (31-38)
2013 @ South Dakota State - OT loss (31-34) THESE LAST 4 GAMES WERE ALL CONSECUTIVE WEEK
Three losses early last season were frustrating in the complete lack of use of David Johnson...not on the level of the previously mentioned though

1968 Yale 29 Harvard 29 - yes it's a tie, but it was like a loss. Both teams were undefeated. Yale lead 22-0 in the first half and 29-13 with 3 minutes left and were driving when they fumbled on the Harvard 14 (Yale's 6th fumble that day). Harvard then scored with 42 seconds left, got the 2 point conversion, recovered the onside kick, and scored with no time on the clock. Another 2 point conversion made it 29-29. One of Harvard great wins and Yale's worst loss, even though it was a tie on the scoreboard.

1974, 1979, 2007 - Harvard games. All equally bad as potential undefeated Yale seasons went up in smoke.

1981 Princeton - Yale wasted another big lead, this time a 21 point lead, and lost 35-31. The worst part of this game was Yale had the ball at the Princeton 20, 4th and 2, with a 3 point lead, just a couple of minutes left in the game and Princeton out of timeouts. Rich Diana had 240 yards rushing. Simple, right? Give him the ball and ice the game. Not Yale. FG was missed and Princeton went right down the field for the winning TD. Yale's only loss that year.

There are several more. Hell, I could right a book.

2011 playoffs - after leading 28-10, Albany trails Stony Brook 31-28, drives 52 yds. in 5 minutes to a 2nd-and goal from the three with 50 secs. left, DiLella forces a pass that was supposed to set up a 3rd down run for the winning TD. instead it's tipped and intercepted.

1999 - As I recall, in Albany's 1st year in D-IAA, Danes tie D-III power Rowan late, then return an interception for a TD, but the stripes decide the XP team charging onto the field is a celebration, assess 15 yds., Albany misses the now 34-yd XP, and Rowan drives for the 39-38 win.

1982 I think, amazing how long these memories last - Albany takes a lead over Southern Conn. in the last minute. The ensuing kickoff is thru the end zone, but Albany is offsides. SCSC returns the next kickoff for the 16-13 win. Asked why we didn't pooch the KO, Bob Ford only answers "Good f..king question."

Most frustrating loss?

ALL OF THEM! ;)

But seriously, in recent memory, it was just "a" loss...but the most frustrating season...2011.

In three consecutive weeks the Mocs lost at #3 App State (12-14), The Citadel (27-28) and at #1 Georgia Southern (27-28)...and then finished the season by losing to #12 Wofford (27-28).

5 points away from 9-2 and probably a top 10 ranking and the playoffs (instead of finishing the season a meager 5-6)

Throw in a 7 point loss to Furman...the Mocs were 12 points shy of being 10-0 versus FCS competition (they also lost to Nebraska 40-7)

16 straight years of losing the Cat-Griz game.

Most frustrating:

1997 At Bozeman, we scored to take the lead and break the streak - less than 30 seconds left as I recall - a couple big plays for the griz and they end up getting a FG as time expires. The streak would continue until 2002. xsmhx

Attended the games in bold.

In '82, Harvard's roughing of Shulman was definitely a controversial call but the celebration at Franklin Field was joyous for a Penn program which had been really down in the dumps.

In '85, Urquhart (who also pitched for the Tiger Baseball team), not a fast man, nevertheless made the run of his life and Princeton held on. That game was a defensive and punting battle, as Princeton stymied the Multiflex while Harvard, for the third time in three years, had Doug Butler's number. As good a passer as Butler was, he always had a hard time against the Cantabs.

In '12, simply an amazing comeback. Harvard was a much better team that day but Princeton got very hot.

1976, Rutgers 17, Colgate 9, a fine Colgate team nearly denies #17 Rutgers an undefeated season on Thanksgiving night.

1977, Delaware 21, Colgate 3, the Hens deny Colgate an undefeated season and a bid to the Peach or Independence Bowls.

1982, Delaware 21, Colgate 13, NCAA Quarterfinals.

There's never been any proof of it. No replay was ever shown. Watching the game back through a TiVo gives nothing. I may grant that one but that PI was a horse **** call that came the play after Jake went down and completely deflated that defense.

Maybe NDSU scores without that PI call, but damn that one sucked.

Watching the refs give away the NDSU vs EWU game in the playoffs is probably I why I drank so much freshmen year. Could be arguably the worst call I've ever seen. To this day, I still have a slight distaste for EWU.

The other one was that 2006 Minnesota game. Growing up in the TC most of my friends loved the gophers, but having family from Fergus Falls, I grew up with a part of Bison in me, and seeing that game live, hurt. Watching them win with Tyler and then again with that crazy Marcus pick, base that lots easier to bear.

Those are mine as well.

MC stung, as we beat them senseless in the regular season. The wishbone wasn't clicking on ice.

You mean the Atlanta team that went 16-3...was a joke? Okay.

Maybe joke was too strong a word. How about this, the Vikings and Broncos were the class of the NFL that year. Moss in his rookie year could do nothing wrong. Denver 14 - 2, Minn 15 - 1 regular season records. Cunningham, Moss, Carter, Smith v Davis, Elway, Smith, Sharpe... it would have been a fun game to see.

Atlanta may have been 16 - 3, but the reality is they were huge underdogs going into that championship game.

Playoff game against Montana in 2009. Needs no explanation

Playoff game against NDSU in 2014. Leading with just over a minute left... Bison go on to win 4th title in a row

As much as it sucked to lose to NDSU in the playoffs last year after taking the late lead, I felt like there was a reasonable chance the Bison could drive the length of the field and pull out the win (which they did).

The Meltdown in Missoula, however, was devastating because I honestly didn't think it was possible to blow that kind of a lead. I literally was celebrating like we won the game in the 3rd quarter and figuring out who we'd play next week and how far we could go in the playoffs. Losing that game was like getting kicked in the nuts by David Beckham.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Hurt all the worse watching JMU go on to win the title.

We feel your pain. In fact, we felt it one week before you when the MEAC refs allowed JMU first down on the 1/2 yard line after Lehigh had just held JMU on four straight cracks from the one. JMU then needs three more cracks from the one to finally score, winning 14-13 and go one to beat Furman the following week enroute to the championship.

For me (a Bison fan):

#1 Losing the 1984 D2 National Championship to Troy University on a 50-yard FG after having some great opportunities to put the game away.
#2 Losing to Eastern Washington in OT to end the 2010 playoff run.

11/8/2014 Fordham 30 Bucknell 27 (OT)- On national TV on Friday night at home in Lewisburg, the Bison scored a go ahead touchdown with 3 minutes left over the 9th-ranked Rams. Fordham took the subsequent kickoff, then drove the field, scoring 1:05 after Bucknell. After Bucknell missed a field goal in overtime, Fordham succeeded.

It was only the second loss of the season, and a Bucknell win over Colgate in the final game of the season would have given the selection committee a tough choice. The committee was relieved of such a decision. 11/22/2014 Colgate 21 Bucknell Turnovers doomed the Bison. 2014, Bucknell finished 8-3, the best Bison record since 1997 but short of something special.

To me the loss to EWU stung, and still stings, is because NDSU had so many chance to end that game but to EWU'S credit they found a way to win when the deck was stacked against them. Plus knowing that an unseeded Villanova was next and how NDSU would have sold their souls to the devil to ensure a home game it is easy to look to Frisco and a match up with Delaware.

I don't blame the referees as I personally think it if they had made a key first down late in the game or stopped EWU on that final drive then the "fumble" never happens. Also the motivation that is provided to NDSU during winter workouts, spring football and through the next season was immeasurable.

Another frustrating loss for NDSU wasn't a game but a player.
1993 the Fargodome opens and NDSU hosts Pittsburgh State in a home opener of 2 top 5 Division 2 teams with National Championship aspirations. NDSU had an All American Quarterback in Arden Beachy running the veer option attack and basically had the game in hand when Beachy torn his knee ligaments and missed the entire season. NDSU lost 3 games that year and all were very close and it is easy to look and say if we had Beachy NDSU wins those games and possibly a National Championship.

I will be the first to admit that being an NDSU fan has been an incredible and I feel very fortunate to have been along for the ride.

"Frustrating" is an interesting word. I would say I was most frustrated throughout 2 playoff games: Stony Brook (which the weather greatly contributed to my feeling frustrated, as a fan having to sit through that) and EWU when we couldn't keep bodies on the field and someone kept pace down to the end, couldn't get the big stop though.

Most upsetting loss: easily JMU hail mary after landers illegally stopped the clock, we defended the hail mary just fine knocked it down but strangely the knock down caught a helmet of another defender, took a high bounce, #1 in the country JMU walked off with a win, we only lost to jmu and wvu that year, had to go to jmu instead of them come to us in playoffs, held a lead with 2 minutes to go (again), landers drove for the win (again)

I'm a Vikings fan. The Bison can never violate my soul in any ways the Vikings haven't already done many times over.

If we're talking about painful losses with NFL games, then the Vikings inflicted possibly my most painful memory as an NFL fan. On 12/1/85, the Eagles blew a 23-0 4th quarter lead at home against the Vikings by allowing Minnesota to score 4 touchdowns in the last 11 minutes of the game and win the game 28-23. The loss all but extinguished the Eagles' playoff hopes. I know there are many Eagles fans that are roughly my age (early 40s; we would have been 10-14 years old at the time) who also remember that painfully brutal loss.

Blowing the Villanova and GSU championships

I was in Chattanooga for Georgia So championship game. Yes, we should/could have won. Adrian Peterson burned us for that last long run to give it to the eagles. It was one of those games. Seems it wasn't meant to be. The Georgia Southern loss which was most frustrating for me is the first time Montana played them. It was in Statesboro and I believe it was Montana's first time in the Semi-finals. The eagles ran all over us. Their option seemed to go for 12 to 20 yards a pop. In fact I believe they were using 13 players on offense to our 11 on defense. Yes, it is a little late but the game film should be reviewed and the outcome of that game reversed by the NCAA! We can't allow such blatant bad behavior to be rewarded.

The Championship loss to Villanova is the one which still burns. "Hell Caesar!" That guy was all world that day. If I remember right he ran, caught, and threw touchdowns in that game. After the game he drove the team home, did their laundry, cooked everyone's dinner, then did volunteer work that evening at a homeless shelter. Yet Montana had the better team and still should have won. Even with the performance of "Hell Caesar!" I don't know how Montana let it get away. Definitely frustrating!!!!!

For me
2008- JMU (regular season)- Monsoon of a game. Nova leading late. JMU is driving down 3 with under a minute to go and no time outs. With about 10 seconds to go JMU is tackled in bounds as the clock ticks. They rush to the line, can't really get a play in before time expires, but manage to take a false start penalty that stops the clock with 0:01 and backs them up 5 yards. Landers connects on about a 40 Hail Mary to win the game.....The next year they change the rule that calls for runoff in that situation, which would have ended the game before the hail mary. That loss stung

2008- JMU (NCAA semis)- Froze my ass off down in Harrisonburg for this one. Nova comes roaring back scoring 13 in the 4th quarter. Gets called for a bogus unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the go ahead TD. As a result JMU starts at midfield and waltzes in the for the game winning TD

2010- EWU- 6 turnovers on the red turf. SIX. We halve that number and we've got a Battle of the Blue in Frisco. Not only was the loss frustrating, but the missed NC matchup is frustrating

1) The 2010 playoff game against Georgia Southern. GSU did not bid for a home game so the game was played at Gibbs. The GSU fans just totally took over our stadium and made it Paulson North. GSU won a close 23-20 game and stormed our field. That was a dark day for me.

2) The 14-7 playoff loss to North Dakota State in the Fargodome in Eric Brietenstein's last game. So close, yet so far away. I know NDSU was definitely the best team in FCS and deserved the win, but I cuodn't help but think some questionable coaching decisions on our part hurt us.

3) The loss to a bad VMI team in 2002 that ended up keeping us out of the playoffs that year. I know a lot of fans thought we still deserved a bid (in fact it lead to the term "Woofed" describing a deserving team left out of the playoffs), but we just win that game and we're in without question.

4) In 1990, my freshman year at Wofford, we had a great regular season. We were a D2 program in those days. Lead by record setting QB Shawn Graves, we won our first 8 games, ended up 9-2 (one of those losses to a very good D1 Citadel team, the other to a Top 5 D2 Jacksonville State team). We got our first postseason invite in many years. We drew #1 Mississippi College on the road for the first round. After leading 17-14 at half, it all unraveled in the second half as we gave up 56 second half points and ended up losing 70-19. It was a frustrating finish to a great season and a sobering reminder of the gap between the best of D2 and the rest. But there is a silver lining to this story, I think Mississippi College later had to vacate the title they ended up winning that year due to cheating.

(dis)honorable mentions- the game at Idaho earlier this year; we likely would have won if we had started the right QB, and the 3-0 home loss to Gardner-Webb in 2013 that was played in hurricane like conditions

2009 loss to Villanova, 14-13, in the Semifinals after leading 10-0 at the half.
2005: lost 29-27 to JMU on last play, wobbly, line drive 45 yd FG from kicker who hadn't kicked one over 30yds. Ball smacked into the crossbar and dropped over.
1996 loss at Northern Iowa, 38-35 in quarterfinals. Tribe stormed back to tie game at 35 after trailing 35-7, forced a UNI punt that could have resulted in a win - Darrin Sharper fumbled the punt, UNI then kicked the game winning FG.
1977: Rutgers, lost 21-16 at homecoming. Fumbled the ball running out the last minute of play down at the Rutgers 20. Two passes, Rutgers TD and win. Worst loss I have ever seen.

Any loss to James Madison or Villanova is frustrating.

Superman already touched on this, but 2010 NC game against EWU was the most frustrating game I've witnessed in person. I won't blame the officials, we had every chance to stop EWU in the 4th quarter and didn't (yeah we did). Ugh.

The MC title was 1989. IUP won it in 1990. Talk about frustrating, we beat MC 23-3 in the regular season. We met again in the title game. It came a heavy snow, and our wishbone offense was slipping and sliding all over the field. We couldn't do anything in the snow, and they beat us 3-0. To add insult to injury, when they vacated the win, the title was vacated. There is no national champion for that season...we should have been awarded the title.

We beat you guys pretty good in 1990... but 1991 was ugly. I was at those games. I remember one of your fans stopping me as they were leaving the stadium, and asking me how many students our University had...they went on to say that we had no business being D2, it was for schools like Wofford, with 2000 students. True story, that... We should have won it all in 1991, but we were not well prepared and Pitt State shut down our option. They were very good, but we should have won. We paid them back in 1992.

Ronald Moore

He won the Harlon Hill in 1992 (we handled him well, but it was hard to run on the Red Bandit Defense).

Both of our losses this year would be high on the list.

2013 - vs Towson in the Semis - missed 4th and 2 pass to a wide open Kupp that would've iced it, sending EWU back to the NC. Instead, Towson marches down the field to score the game winning TD.
2014 - vs Illinois State - much like 2013, another season wasted by a terrible defense. If EWU's D had been mediocre in 2013 and 2014, who knows, the Bison might only have 2 Titles, and EWU vs NDSU would be the most hate-filled rivalry in fcs.
2004 - vs Sam Houston State - 20 point lead in the 4th quarter of the quarterfinals blown, missed XP earlier in the game bites us.
2008 - at Colorado - Outplayed the Buffs 90% of the game, give up 2 TDs late, one of which was a pick 6, giving up the 4th quarter lead again.
2007 - at Montana - **** you Ryan Bagley and Dan Carpenter!!!! Haha, the miracle 4th and 10 catch and game winning fg.

Very high on my list is the 34 - 27 OT loss to uk about 10 minutes ago. Frustrating is the right word for that one. We've lost bigger games that made me sick. This one was just frustrating. I'll build a list of the ones that made me sick after washing this one away with a couple of bourbons.
