ESPN is always slow to load the FCS games. Last Saturday, they were still showing the previous Saturday's games until mid-afternoon.

Go Maroons!

Morningside is playing at the right level for the size school that they are. In their NCC days they were pretty much a W.

They got a few breaks from the refs. Overall, I would pick NDSU to beat them 8 out of 10, UNI, SDSU too. Also looked at their roster, seems like they try to hide how many transfers they have. I am not a fan of teams that run on transfers.

Are you kidding me? That is one of their better rules. There is no way an FCS team should play that team...it is a true embarrassment to have that team scheduled and I hope it stops immediately now that this rule is in place.

I will disagree. To me it looked to be called very fairly. The onside kick was too close to call, so I think they got that right - the cameras just couldn't prove whether JMU or SMU first touched the ball. And all night JMU pressed well on their WRs especially when 1-on-1 in open space down the sidelines. Numerous times the officials could have thrown laundry on the field for tight coverage, but they rightly let the boys play. There might have been 1 or 2 blown calls, but it was even most of the game from my vantage point behind a computer screen.

Bottom line, JMU should have had another 14-17 points in that game. It never should have been that close they way the Dukes were playing. While Vad will get all the credit, deservedly so, the offensive and defensive lines ruled SMU. Coverage was great (or their QB was too cautious) causing a few coverage sacks. Great persistence by a rag tag D-line to pressure the QB. Good calls on a few selected blitzes. Given the way SMU ran up and down the field against the likes of Baylor and TCU, I was thoroughly impressed with JMU's defense, particularly in the first half. I know that sounds silly when the final score is 48-45, but I kind of figured JMU would need to score about 50 to win this game. JMU just plays too fast, giving the opposing team many opportunities to score. They need to work on clock management with a lead in Q4 for future games.

RootinFerDukes

We'll have to disagree on calls. It looked like smu touched the onside kick at the 8 yard mark, so they got that wrong. A borderline PI call gave smu a score before the half, the roughing the passer at the end. Even if it was warranted, I just couldn't stop laughing at that. We do need to shore up three straight games of sideline/coaching penalties. That's really unacceptable.
Vad's interceptions burnt us and credit smu for scoring when they were handed a gift. It looks like our defense is "reeling" after a costly turnover and is still tired and not prepared to stop the ensuing opponent drive.
Our defense was amazing and why we won more than anything. I also said to my wife, this is the only time I'll say I was happy with a defensive performance when we allowed 45 points. 21 or so of those points were off of our turnovers.
I agree on fourth quarter clock management, but Everett disagrees apparently. He wants to be up tempo all game. The commentators were amazed that we weren't milking the clock in the 4th qtr.

I saw the last quarter of the game. The question isn't if these calls were marginal- they were. There is also a valid point for being able to overturn. However, when all calls go against the FCS team, there is something to be said about being fair. I watch a LOT of FCS-FBS games, and this is a common theme. Clenz also analyzed stats and FCS teams are a generally more penalized in these games.

Frankly, I have zero problems if a team wishes to schedule them at their own peril. The games should count. It won't affect the playoffs, just let the game count as a win, but doesn't count towards the playoffs.
I find it reprehensible that the NCAA would create/enforce the rule for this season. IMO, 2015 should have been the last season of grace, before the hammer comes down. Teams cannot manufacture a new schedule on a whim.

Sorry, you don't get to sell that crap here. You can try, I just don't see anyone buying it is all. You don't get to schedule a team like this and pretend it gets the same mark in the win column that real teams get...even if they are below D1 they are vastly superior to playing a club team like that.

It would be a more legit win to count a scrimmage than this.

Considering that there's only about seven BCS level programs that draw a profit each year, I wouldn't bother going down that road. Every FCS program is spending more than they're making. That is a fact. Student fees are keeping most athletic programs alive nationwide.

I'm not privy to SFU's financial information, so I can not justly answer this prodding question with assurance.

Why bother playing?

Because we love the game. Why does Northern Iowa bother to play? Winning at the FCS level, while nice, is virtually meaningless to the nation. Yet, for all of your success you are still in the same football division as the Red Flash. The FBS could rightly ask you: why bother playing?
