Can't believe that NDSU is only up 21. Moorhead State had more offense in the first half back in the 2000 80-0 game.

Positives for UND:

- No turnovers
- Their special teams have outplayed NDSU's
- Their defense has done enough to keep them in the game

I'm not sold on their run defense. Their entire defensive plan against us: Sell out on the run, 100%, no matter what. Blitz on obvious passing downs/yardage, and hope we drop the pass.

I'm with you. They had 8 or 9 in the box and blitzed nearly every down sellingbout to stop the run. I guess it worked as we only scored 34 and under 400 yards of offense, but it wasn't just the front 7.

Weber State blitzed a lot and it was no where near as much as UND. They were run blitzing almost every play on some series and 3 and long. I haven't seen a team do that much before. Definitely "selling out" to stop the run.

Professor Chaos

UND is going to struggle in the pass happy Big Sky unless their pass defense improves a lot. Maybe they won't sell out against the run on most teams like the did for NDSU but with as inept as their offense looked they're going to have a hard time keeping up without a much improved defense on the back end.

UND's defensive style appears similar to the Todd Bowles/Arizona Cardinals style, which also seems philosophically akin to the 46 defense. NoDak doesn't have the DBs to make that work at present, though.

Yet somehow they keeping winning the basketball games played in Grand Forks xmadx

I actually think there will be a lot of parallels to the D1 versions of the NDSU/UND rivalry in football and men's basketball. Honestly that first 2010 basketball game, despite being in the Fargodome which is a horrible basketball venue and immediately following the crushing EWU defeat in the FCS playoffs, had a ton of energy. The 2011 game, being the first in Grand Forks, had a ton of energy. Since then the 2012 and 2014 games in Fargo (I didn't go to the 2013 game in Grand Forks) have been pretty "meh". Of course that's probably due to the fact that NDSU has ****stomped UND in all 3 games played in Fargo to this point. The SDSU men's basketball games in Fargo have been much more intense during that time (but again those have mostly been close games).

I get the feeling the 2019 football game won't be quite as big of a deal as this game was and going forward if additional games are played it'll be more and more of a "meh" feeling to them unless UND football turns into a perennial FCS playoff contender.

They will eventually be a playoff team... They have too many resources and are in too good of an (FCS) football area to be crap forever.

Of course they have to realize what NDSU SDSU and UNI already know. Play defense with upper Midwest recruits and you win games.

If that is the criteria it looks like they are well on their way defensively. Might want to check the depth chart first.

Concerning the "8-9 men in the box" stuff. No they didn't do that every play, stupid. They did it the same amount that NDSU did.
If you watched the game, when NDSU had 2 TE's and a FB in the game UND packed it in with them. NDSU did the exact same thing when UND put 2 FB's and 1 TE in - did you see how many guys they had on the line of scrimmage. More than four I know that.

When NDSU spread them out they actually had their dime back in with them at times, meaning they could not have "8-9" guys in the box. It just seemed like that because they brought 6 and NDSU couldn't block them all. You guys are going to have issues up front vs. teams like UNI, Western, and SDSU if their defenses are as good as everyone claims.

True, except UND had no downfield passing attack to loosen the defense with. Wentz torched UND's secondary for most of the first half but UND continued to pack the box against the run. It's obvious where UND's defensive strengths and weaknesses are so it seemed odd that they would scheme to bolster their strong run defense and weaken their already porous pass defense. The cushion some of those CBs were giving NDSU's WRs was just begging NDSU to throw the ball.

The cushion some of those CBs were giving NDSU's WRs was just begging NDSU to throw the ball.

Which obviously needs to be addressed. If you are going to get beat by a better team that likes to run the ball, you make sure they have to try and beat you through the air and hope you can make some plays. UND tried that and couldn't make any plays due to their corners not being good enough. Part of turning over the roster and finding better players.

the gap is no closer today than it was 3 years ago.....und was totally overmatched and the QB was flustered from the stretches till the press conference

All I know is if they thought this was going to help them in recruiting against NDSU they thought wrong. Any kid who had a chance to be either at the game or see it on TV or also experience the atmosphere at tailgating and in the dome makes it a no brainer.

But they will think--hey I can play there(UND). LOL

UND run blitzed a lot during the game. You do not need to have 9 in the box to do that. 6-7 guys crashed hard on most running situations. When CW started to pick apart the defense, then UND backed off some on the blitzing. But that is the most blitzing I have seen from any team in the D1 era.

Good stuff about Wentz and the deep ball.

^^

That was pretty great. Of course there are so many inside references that it probably isn't as impressive to a non-NDSU fan.

Like the fact that every highlight clip is an FBS victory or a National Championship.
