Stony Brook @ Toledo - Could be a bit tight for rockets, but they're a quality MAC team
Elon @ Wake Forest - Bottom of ACC >> Bottom of CAA
#4 Villanova @ Connecticut - I think this game would be a better match-up on the hardwood
#7 New Hampshire @ San Jose State - SJSU giving away tickets for free, weak MW team
Jacksonville @ Delaware - An upset by some polls, Newark would burn if Hens lose
Rhode Island @ Syracuse - Rhody should try to swap FBS games with Nova
#21 Richmond @ Maryland - Terps don't wan to lose last FCS game
Maine @ Boston College - I think BC is supposed to be pretty good
Albany @ Buffalo - Depth gives Bulls edge in 4th
Morehead State @ #14 James Madison - This game will be a laugher
Towson @ East Carolina - ECU can score at will
William & Mary @ Lafayette - Best FCS-FCS game on schedule

So far 11 have posted W vs L predictions. 8 have it exactly the same, one thinks NOVA will lose to Syracuse, one thinks UNH will lose to to SJSU and one thinks both NOVA and UNH will lose. I think we need to raise the difficulty level by requiring score prediction for at least a couple games.

It balances out over the course of the season. It's just like that in non-conference matchups where we are all convinced the CAA will be undefeated against non-con FCS competition.

Thursday, September 3
Stony Brook at Toledo - Not as close as many think it will be. Toledo is a better MAC team.
Elon at Wake Forest - A blowout for Wake Forest.
#3 Villanova at Connecticut - A toss-up, but I think Robertson is talented enough to pull off the "upset". Memories of not getting it done last year vs. Syracuse will motivate them.
#7 New Hampshire at San Jose State - A toss-up, but I think a meddling MWC team is still better than a 2nd place CAA team. UNH could upset them.

Friday, September 4
Jacksonville at Delaware - UD will win convincingly. People are giving Jacksonville too much credit.
Rhode Island at Syracuse - Another blowout.

Saturday, September 5
#18 Richmond at Maryland - Maryland will roll easily against UR.
Maine at Boston College - A convincing win for BC that will take too long for them to get going. Maine in it early.
Albany at Buffalo - Buffalo should win easily.
Morehead State at #13 James Madison - A blowout. Hopefully the JMU D will look good against a sub-par opponent.
Towson at East Carolina - A blowout down in Greenville.
William & Mary at Lafayette - WM should win, but will have to battle to get that win. Small chance that Lafayette pulls the upset.

Predictions:

Thursday, Sept.3rd

Toledo 26 Stony Brook 10 - Rockets may be in for tussle, but don't think the Wolves have enough to pull it off. (Toledo -26.5)

Wake Forest 31 Elon 7 - Demon Deacons pound on The Phoenix in this in-state battle. (WF -28.5)

Villanova 14 UCONN 13 - I'm not as confident as others that 'Cats are a winner here. I think the Robertson fanfare masquerades some question marks on the OL & skilled positions. UCONN covers +3 point spread.

San Jose State 24 UNH 21 - Jet lag takes hold late in game & a weak FBS team gets a home win. (SJS - 5.5)

FRIDAY, Sept. 5th
Delaware 31 Jacksonville 24 - Blue Hens maybe the youngest team in FCS. Need a win here or melloware13 & Carribenhen will be on suicide watch early.

Syracuse 41 Rhode Island 13 - Think Rhody will be better, but this game won't show it. (Syracuse -33)

SATURDAY, Sept. 6th
Maryland 27 Richmond 17 - I got a feeling that Terrapins have a fear of Spiders. (Maryland - 20.5)

BC 35 Maine 17 - regional battle will be entertaining for a half. (BC - 28)

Buffalo 27 Albany 17 - I predict snow. (Buffalo -13.5)

James Madison 45 Morehead State 14 - not even close if Phil Simms was under center for the MSU Eagles.

East Carolina 42 Towson 21 - Coach Ambrose tries to find the magic of their FCS runner up season. Nothing in the bag of tricks this day. (ECU -30.5)

William & Mary 28 Lafayette 20 - A little home cookin' north of the Mason-Dixon keeps it closer than it should.

Stony Brook @ Toledo - Good game for about a half, but Stony Brook will have to be an improved offensive unit to have any chance to stick with this stolid MAC outfit.
Elon @ Wake Forest - Elon will get better, but it will still be a little while until they can compete in this type of matchup
#4 Villanova @ Connecticut - Villanova never seems to win this game. They beat Temple in 2009, but I feel like every year I think they will win their FBS matchup and they don't (they almost beat Syracuse last year). You have to think after losing to Towson and almost losing to Stony Brook UConn will probably get up for this game.
#7 New Hampshire @ San Jose State - San Jose State is not very good, but I think New Hampshire takes a step back from last year and San Jose State wins a tight one.
Jacksonville @ Delaware - Jacksonville was a 9-2 team last year, however they got destroyed by the only good team they played last year. If this was at Jacksonville I would pick them to win, but I think Delaware pulls it out at home.
Rhode Island @ Syracuse - Syracuse wins going away in this one.
#21 Richmond @ Maryland - Terps are always sloppy in these FCS matchups, but always seem to find a way to escape.
Maine @ Boston College - Maine is too much of a wild card to expect them to win this game.
Albany @ Buffalo - I like the direction Albany is going in, but I think Buffalo pulls this one out.
Morehead State @ #14 James Madison - James Madison by at least two touchdowns
Towson @ East Carolina - I want to think Towson can make this a good game, but too many unknowns going into this one.
William & Mary @ Lafayette - This feels like one of those disappointing road non-conference performances we have seen the CAA have in FCS matchups early in the year recently.

Toledo 45 Stony Brook 17 - The Rockets are always a tough out.
Wake Forest 42 Elon 16 - Bad FBS vs Bad FCS
Villanova 27 UConn 17 - Villanova has the better coach and QB. That's a recipe for success....
San Jose State 38 UNH 20 - This is a tougher game for a semi rebuilding Wildcat team than some think. The Spartans are pretty bad though...
Delaware 31 Jacksonville 7 - The Hens with a methodical route...
Syracuse 48 URI 10 - Ugly
Maryland 41 Richmond 20 - Spiders hang around for a half....
BC 40 Maine 13 - BC has the potential to be a Top 25 team this year....
Buffalo 27 Albany 14 - Danes make it interesting but Bulls just a little too talented....
JMU 55 Morehead State 21 - A greater challenge awaits the Dukes next week :D
ECU 38 Towson 27 - The Pirates have a lot of questions. I think the Tigers are one of the bigger wildcards in FCS this year....

The AAC is the FBS conference I follow the closest. Most preseason projections have ECU picked for 3rd or 4th in the AAC East. The vibe I get from the Pirate faithful is uneasiness. Some believe this might be McNeils weakest team since his second year in Greenville. I know not much is expected from Towson but I can't help but think Ambrose has stockpiled talent. I'm extremely interested to see how this one plays out.

No it's your prediction. I'm just pulling your leg. If we have a score like that people might start a fire Everett chant this early. We barely beat st Francis in 2013 and lost to stony brook that year too. Many a fan was furious watching that crap.

While I know there is no "rule" about this on "pick-em" threads, most of us seem to refrain from making comments about the accuracy of individual game predictions. I see the value in this thread as getting an overall consensus on the games from other AGS posters. As we get closer to kick-offs, most of these games will have separate threads in which you will see opinions and counter-arguments concerning who will win and lose, by how much, and why.

The top of the MAC is considerably better than the top of the CAA. Toledo, Northern Illinois, Ohio and usually one or two other teams would beat up with the better CAA teams on a regular basis.

There's probably 3 or 4 MAC teams per year that a good CAA team would have a real shot to beat. Akron, Kent State, EMU, Buffalo and UMass have been the recent punching bags.

I might have a better time believing that if the head to head matchups between them was closer to .500.

Sitting Bull

Considering they get every home game, how could you.

i don't know the complete record between the two or if we had any match-ups last year other than UNH at Toledo which wasn't that close beyond halftime (I think UNH went out to an early lead?).

in 2013, we had 4 matchups that were as follows (scores might be off a tad):
Maine 24 UMass 14
Akron 38 JMU 35
Central Michigan 24 UNH 21
Buffalo 26 Stony Brook 23 OT

These were obviously ALL road games. Had the games been all CAA home games, we likely would have gone 4-0.

i didn't say the CAA was better overall, just the difference was pretty thin.

i do agree that a couple of the teams as mentioned are clearly a step ahead, Toledo and NIU.

Not sure on Ohio U. Isn't this the same Ohio U. that Northeastern clobbered 31-0 at OU about 10 years ago?

The MAC is hell of a lot closer to the CAA than they are the Big 10, regardless of divisional structure.

RootinFerDukes
August 29th, 2015, 07:51 AM
I disagree that it's a thin difference. I do agree that the G5, especially the lower half of them, are much closer to Fcs than they are to even the lowest of P5 schools.
Adding coastal to the sunbelt makes it all but an Fcs conference. We should give them an autobid to the Fcs playoffs.

As a UA fan, I'd love to see this result but the reality is that we are probably another year or two away in terms of build-up. UA was picked 10th if I recall so even in the CAA we are projected (for whatever that's worth) as a basement team. If Buffalo struggles with UA here what does that say about them? Albany is still transitioning to full scholarship, it will take some time.

I've got a spreadsheet going to track scores because unlike Melloware I just graduated and am now quite bored. Got a few people I'm going to PMing that forgot a to pick a game. Here's how the picks are panning out

Toledo- 100%
Wake Forest- 100%
Villanova- 77%
New Hampshire 62%
Delaware- 100%
Syracuse- 100%
Maryland- 100%
Boston College- 100%
Buffalo- 96%
Eastern Carolina- 100%
William & Mary- 96%

Well looks like no one got the outcome of the Stony Brook game except for the 1 entry that forgot to pick it xlolx

3 games down and only 4 perfect entries left

I think if you picked Toledo to win, it should count. They were leading at the time of cancellation.

I went 10-2. VU and UD both lost when I picked them to win. I'm counting the stony brook game as correct, since the last score was in my favor.
