View Full Version : SLC Pick'em 2015 Week 1

BEAR
August 13th, 2015, 11:36 AM
Welcome to the 2015 Southland Conference Pick’em game!

Remember to pick the winner and the point margin.

ALL picks must be in BEFORE 6 p.m. the day before the first game!

ALL picks must be in by Wednesday Sept. 2nd by 6 p.m.

Week 1- Begins Sept 3, 2015.

UCA at Samford
SELA at NWST
ACU at Fresno State
Texas A&M Kingsville at Incarnate Word
Sam Houston at Texas Tech
McNeese at LSU
Bethany College at Houston Baptist
Northern Arizona at SFA
Bacone College at Lamar

Rules:
1. Pick winner of game correctly. Choose wrong and you're out for that pick.
2. Choose point spread. Ex: Sam wins by 3. Failure to do so and not responding to urging to do so will disqualify you from those picks.
3. Contestant who chooses correct winner and is closest to point spread gets the "quality" point for that game.
4. In case of a tie both contestants get quality point.
5. During the last week of the regular season or thereabouts (when contestants are few) the picks will be PM'd to me so if there is a close contest the leader can't simply vote the same way as the second place contestant.
6. All picks must be in by 6 p.m. central time the day before the first game. Ex: UCA plays Samford at 6 p.m. Thursday Sept. 3rd. Picks must be in by 6 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 2nd.
7. NO changing picks for games played the Saturday after Thursday games. Ex: If UCA plays on Thursday then ALL Saturday picks must be in by 6 p.m. Wednesday.
8. Missing one week’s picks won't hurt you early on but two weeks makes it nearly impossible to catch up. Use caution.
9. The player with the least amount of quality points after week 2 will be dropped from the contest. This will continue each week. If two or more players are deemed beyond their ability to catch up quality points wise they will both be dropped. Ex. UCABEAR and REDBIRD were 8 points behind week two so UCABEAR and redbird were dropped.
10. If any contestant has a complaint I will consult with another noncontestant about course of action. All decisions by judges are final.
11. If you're not having fun with this..you're missing the point.

Is Tenpenny eligible this year or will he have to sit out a year? He transferred from Alabama to UNLV and now Nicholls.

FWIW, former P5 linemen Frank Kee (TCU) and Hanner Shipley (LSU) are now ACU Wildcats. Both were late pick ups. Adjust your scores accordingly.

Calling Shipley a tight end is somewhat of a stretch at 298 lbs, lol. Outside the tackle, tackle might be a better term. Regardless, a nice pickup and a big body to lead the running game. Can't blame him for leaving LSU with the TE's they have in the stable.

Did getting into SELA all of a sudden become difficult? That is the 2nd big name Nicholls has got. That is rare.

I agree. Shipley is coming to ACU to play tackle. Miles likes a big tight end in certain situations. I think the plan at LSU was to use him for run blocking and pass protection down the road. Our plan is prep him to step into the left tackle spot next season when we lose Codey Funk.

Short term, Kee will be of more immediate help. He started at OG for TCU last year in their first game, but was injured and wound up with a medical redshirt. We are using him as a nose tackle, where he played as a juco.

Apparently our grad school is tougher to get into than Nicholls. I figured it would be the same since we are in the same system.

Interesting articles about the SLC and its players.

Here's one from UCA DB/CB Dillon Winfrey:

“Coach Conque was one of those head coaches that if I see him around the building, I keep my head down,” Winfrey says. “Everybody’s scared to talk to him. Coach Campbell, man, I love Coach Campbell. He’s probably the best coach I’ve ever been a part of. There’s something about him. He’s a player’s coach for real.”

“It’s going to be a game,” Winfrey says. “Last year against them, that was probably the most physical, trash-talking game I’ve ever been a part of. So much emotion. Everybody was hurt and all that he left without talking to us, and we felt like we owed him something.”

http://www.syncweekly.com/news/2015/aug/25/all-grown/

Here's one from STATS that discusses the SLC race:

(STATS) - Sam Houston State is one of the leading candidates to win the FCS national championship this season.
Stephen F. Austin brings back a star quarterback from a playoff squad.
Central Arkansas is senior-laden. McNeese State always wins. Abilene Christian is sensing a breakout.
Oops, it shouldn't be this easy to forget Southeastern Louisiana in the Southland Conference. Yet the Lions don't seem to be grabbing headlines leading into the season even though they are the two-time defending league champions.
That could work against the rest of the Southland.

Rev knows Lamar. They love running up the score on the weakest teams they can possibly find to feel better about themselves.

They'll need it. There's a very big possibility they'll start the season 1-6.

My predictions about your program have been correct for YEARS. YEARS.

Who are you going to beat after Bacone and before HBU?

The weakest team in that stretch is ACU and I wouldn't be shocked if they ended up near the top. Everyone else is clearly better at this point.

No way you win 2 games in stretch. Not happening.

Dunno, we'll find out starting Thursday. D'Shaie Landor is very talented in his own right and has had an outstanding fall camp. We'll see how it goes when the lights flip on for real but I don't foresee much drop off in offensive production.

I have a large feeling we will see the same overall skill level from Southeastern, just on different sides of the ball. Ok, maybe a little less, Bennett was a big deal. But with our OC in his second year, he's had more time to jel and I believe the mental errors will be reduced signicantly. Defense is stacked and that's all I can say about that.

SELA- I think they won't be as good on offense but they return a great defense.
SAM- Balanced overall.
UCA- Same on offense but defense is better.
SFA- A better team than last year.
McNeese- Will have a better record than last year.
ACU- Coach is gonna win them a few more games.
NWST- Upset special. Dark horse.
Lamar- getting better.
Nicholls- struggling
IW- getting better.

I think overall the SLC has better depth in the top 3/4 of the conference than they have had in a long while. I think every team, on ANY GIVEN SATURDAY, except for the bottom feeders (Nicholls, UIW, and HBU) can beat anybody else. It will come down to who is most consistent.

Theoretically, all of them can be "better." They can all have a more productive offense, better defense, fewer penalties, etc. But in relation to each other, if they are all better some will still be worse than others by comparison. Because of this, their records may not reflect the improvement.

I'll add to that the team with the best defense will tend to win one more game than a team with a good offense and mediocre defense. That's why I'm putting SAM and SELA up there again. Even if the records for conference go 8-1 for the champ(s) and just 7-2 for the next place team. I think only 1 game will separate the champ from the second place team. I don't see any undefeated teams this year.

This is about the Sheriff Deputy in the Houston area?

Why would she think he might deserve it? Maybe, it is because he was pumping fossil fuel in an environmental polluting carbon emitting car with a combustion engine. Plus, he was white, male, and probably a Christian. On top of all that he was a "cop" so he had to be guilty of something. Also, there is those creepy perv eyes (so that means he was probably a sexual deviate).

Disclaimer: The above is supposition about what her views might be and is 180 degrees the opposite of what mine are.

You want to see creepy evil looking eyes, look at that first photo they released of the druggie slime ball that killed Trooper Steven Vincent.

How in the hell do you accumulate 462 yards, complete 46 passes, control the clock, no pics and only 16 points? I see you had two fumbles but still...

181 yards of penalties didn't help. Defense was historically bad!

Samford hit the big plays. We gave up that zone D we played last year for man on man....great if you have the DBs...but we got burned. Different defense this year. I'm thinking 6th in the conference now. Next year maybe HBU will be better. We lost our backup QB Hildebrand.

ACU was impressive. In the first Quarter when we tied the game at 7-7. It was pretty much downhill from there. Fresno's defense shut down our offense, something that surprised me. Simply put, they had better athletes than us.

Up next, Houston Baptist. Hopefully, with better results.

Yeah that 7-7 thing showed up to our game too. But so did the downhill. xnodx

Next up: Oklahoma State. :(

Samford has a really good offense and a defense that is quick and big. I bet now that I said that they won't win another game all year. xlolx

Pros: Even though our defense gave up major yardage (no surprise) they actually looked better. Giving up big plays accounted for most of that. Our offense looked like they struggled to catch a pass AND we probably threw it to the sideline 50 times. Oooooh hard to figure out how to defend that crap. xsmhx

Not a good week for the SLC OOC. SFA-Ouch. UCA-Ouch. SHSU-Ouch. ACU-Ouch.

Conference Bragging Points: McNeese has held LSU scoreless for hours. Lamar wins over, um, who was that again? Houston Baptist picks up a W over another sub D2 team. UIW squeaks by former LSC rival TAMUK.

I wouldn't classify SHSU's weekend as ouch. We outgained a Big 12 school, got more first downs and looked more talented. It's hard to win big games with 4 second half turnovers, questionable play calling and special teams errors. On the other hand it's clear to me we will dominate the SLC this year. Based on today, we're too damn talented not to sweep the conference.

You may may wind ranked #1 this week by virtue of losses by other contenders, some of which were shockingly lopsided defeats at the hands of the dregs of P5 conferences, and I agree that you will dominate the SLC.

Still, even though your loss had some bright spots, it was to a team that barely escaped with a win against Central Arkansas last season and whose coach is on the hot seat.

This. We should have won this game. Turnovers and a special teams brain fart were the difference. Oh, and that Longo fella calling plays. Tech never stopped our run game consistently, yet we continued to throw it for no logical reason.

Thanks. That team didn't look like the UCA team we've watched all year in practices. I didn't realize we had nearly 200 yards in penalties! Anyway Hatcher out coached us and picked on our 5'8" DB. Excellent move. I saw numerous photos of the Bear players interacting with the Bulldog players. Looks like both teams had the game decided in the first quarter after both our QBs got hurt and we're just messing around and having a blast on the field. Some fun photos. xlolx I'll see if I can post some. Anyway, onto Oklahoma State!
