View Full Version : Old Historical Pics of FCS Teams Thread

The Aggie? pic someone recently posted in another thread caught my eye and interest. I really like seeing these old 1880's - 1940's or so Football Pics. I think the Team Photo's are usually more interesting than the action photo's (unless there is blood in the action ones :) ). So, I thought others might enjoy posting cool pics of theirs or other teams. I'll start with the 1898 Mercer Bears...

...a team that almost wasn't, until a GREAT FOOTBALL MOM, Rosalind Burns Gammon, saved the day & saved the sport of Football in the Great (Football-Crazy) State of Georgia...

"It was in the Virginia game of 1897 that tragedy struck the Georgia Bulldogs. In the second half of that game, a Georgia fullback named Richard Vonalbade ("Von") Gammon (http://self.gutenberg.org/articles/Richard_Von_Albade_Gammon), was fatally injured in a play. In reaction to his death, the Georgia, Georgia Tech and Mercer (http://self.gutenberg.org/articles/Mercer_University) football teams disbanded, the Atlanta Journal (http://self.gutenberg.org/articles/Atlanta_Journal) ran a headline proclaiming, the "Death Knell of Football" and the Georgia legislature passed a bill to outlaw football in the state of Georgia. As the bill sat on the desk of Georgia Governor William Yates Atkinson (http://self.gutenberg.org/articles/William_Yates_Atkinson), a letter that Gammon's mother, Rosalind Burns Gammon (http://self.gutenberg.org/articles/Rosalind_Burns_Gammon), had written to the state legislature was revealed. In her letter, she pleaded with the legislators not to pass the bill because her son so loved football. As a result reading her letter, Governor Atkinson vetoed the bill to ban football in Georgia"

QB is way too deep for the ND box and everyone should be on the same side of the center. Might be some sort of variation of it, but not a true ND box offense there.

This is great! Gonna go out on a limb and guess that's not Clemson's Varsity squad :) Based on the neck rolls, I would guess no later than mid-80's...but maybe that's the 'era' of the mfr of the equipment & it had been handed down a time or 3.

I love Club Football. When I was in HS, my older bro was the Captain or President? of NC State's Club Team, so they invited me to play with them on an occasional Saturday (after having played both ways - everything except KO Team in my HS game on Friday night), but the real fun was the annual Spring Games in Myrtle Beach. 6 or 8 College Teams from NC, SC, and VA in some kind of round robin format playing a couple of games on Sat & Sun. Beer kegs on the sidelines. IT WAS AWESOME!!!

I never had the opportunity to see Chamberlain Field in person unfortunately, but I've been told stories about how one of the end zones sloped up in a corner. I guess this photo just provides evidence supporting what I've been told. I been to the location of the former stadium, and with the grading during construction of Chamberlain Pavilion and re-purposing of Chamberlain Field, the slope was of course removed.

I played there in the 80's and the stories...and this photo...are DEFINITELY true. The UTC WR's knew how to run up that slope & use it to their advantage as TO is doing in that pic. I visited the 'ruins' of Chamberlain in 2010. I felt a little like those D-Day Veterans going back to visit Omaha Beach. You had to be a Warrior to play (and shower - but that's another story) there. The SoCon was certainly the 'Wild West' back in those days.

Here's a couple of pictures from the UCA team in 1916. Awesome to see those. Remember not long after that 90% of the college was sent off to war. Rural and poor but full of history...

There's a "T" on the front of the jersey which stands for Teachers College. The other photo the school was called The Normal School of Arkansas. That's a name used frequently in many states as designating a state university or college.

Here's one from an undefeated season in the 1930s.

Since y'all are posting pics from 1985...

Here's one of McNeese vs. The University of Texas @ Arlington, who - despite producing quite a few NFL players, dropped football the next year.

Look how heavy handed McNeese is...with everybody leaning forward. 90% of the time, the opposing defense could call out the correct play. When you only run the sweep and a few inside plays, it's not hard to guess right!

https://scontent-dft4-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/310969_10150269746003406_606571_n.jpg?oh=b67351a9e d6876c09503a97107e2f44f&oe=5A374D11

Here's another, McNeese vs. North Texas State, playing during Hurricane Juan, which went ashore the next day at Morgan City, La.,

You couldn't get away with playing a game that close to a storm now...

This one was a 0-0 tie. Here, McNeese QB Subester Brooks runs a QB sneak and climbs all over my back to get a first down...

These pictures aren't that old, as they come from 2012. I was at this game against Southeastern Louisiana and the game against SFA (picture number 2). Nike did a terrible job with the football pants Sam Houston wore that year. They were UGLY.

One of FCS's newest members, Lindenwood University. 1999 I believe. Still an NAIA then. This was the season after the program's first ever playoff berth in 1998.

Edit: I just realized that it says 1997.... so this was the year BEFORE they earned a playoff spot.
