I'm sure we've done threads like these in the past but here's the idea. Create two lists here:

1. Places you've already visited in the FCS. In no particular order.
2. Places you want to visit FCS. Your bucket list. Maximum 15 places, you have to choose a top 15. No particular order.

If you've already visited a certain place then they can't be on the bucket list. Others are starting to include all college football venues so I'll update my list.

I'll start:

FCS Places I've Been:
1. North Dakota State
2. Northern Iowa
3. Western Illinois
4. South Dakota
5. Montana State
6. South Dakota State
7. Drake

FBS Places I've Been:
1. Purdue
2. Iowa State
3. Iowa
4. Minnesota
5. Illinois

I've been to.

1. NDSU
2. SDSU
3. UND
4. Indiana State
5. SIU
6. Missouri State
7. South Dakota
8. UNI

I was going to WIU last year but complications prevented me from doing so. I'd like to hit the rest of the MVFC so WIU, ISUr, and YSU.

I'm trying to go to Montana this year

I'm not really dying to see anywhere else specifically. YSU and Montana are going to be hard enough work.

as an aside, you're not missing much with Indiana State. It makes CAS look like Jerryworld.

Places I've Been:
Montana
Montana State
Eastern Washington
Chattanooga

Bucket List:

Other than NDSU, there isn't really much that I'm dying to see either. There just isn't the atmosphere at most programs that would wow me like you get with Montana and NDSU. I would say though the following:

Frisco
NDSU
Portland State
Cal Poly

My bucket list is led by Frisco (although I hope the championship can return to Charleston after the flag comes down).
I'd also like to visit Missoula and Fargo at some point.

I'm surprised so many people want to visit CCU playing on teal turf in Conway, instead of The Citadel in Charleston. The only things CCU has over the the Citadel is prettier women and a better football team (not that those are unimportant!).

I have to add Holy Cross to future destinations. It's the only PL school I have not visited. I need to bask in the greatness of days of yore....

Honestly though, HC has the largest stadium in the PL plus their campus looks very nice. And I can't deny the fact I always wanted to say "Welcome to Wooooster, that will be a dollar twenty-five" in perfect Toll-booth Willie fashion in the actual city of Worcester...

Lehigh needs to get things turned around this year and make themselves an attractive OOC opponent to some of that national FCS programs. Lehigh has done great scheduling the best of the east, UNH, Villanova, JMU, Liberty etc., but with scholarships and hopefully increased ambitions, it's time to branch out. Teams like EWU, SHSU, Coastal Carolina, UNI have shown the willingness to travel far and wide. There's no reason Lehigh can't get a home and home with someone of that ilk...

Believe me, there's amusing criticism to be had there. The place looks like a Soviet era Olympic site that was abandoned and restored.

It also bears a strong resemblance to a sewage treatment plant.

*Princeton

To be fair, I've only started going to Division I-AA/FCS games on a regular basis in 2010 and developed genuine interest in attending any college football games not long before that. Among all college football stadiums, my #1 bucket list facility where I've never attended a game is Scott Stadium at the University of Virginia.

I have a much greater level of interest in eventually getting to every MLB ballpark (been to 17 current parks, 22 overall) and possibly every NFL stadium (though I only have significant interest in attending Philadelphia Eagles games).

Final thought - we should petition the guy who runs the Football Passport site to add Division I-AA/FCS stadiums to his listing. I suspect he'll never do so due to cost issues, but if people are willing to pay a little money for membership...

I'm not going to post a list, but I've noticed that many of you listed Cal Poly. If you don't have Poly on your list, you should. San Luis Obispo is one of the great places on earth and the California Central Coast is absolutely beautiful. Alex Spanos Stadium is decent, though it needs to be expanded (Capacity 11075), and parking is crazy.

You don't need to go to a football game to enjoy the Campus the town, the area. If you have a chance, you should visit San Luis Obispo. And if you do come for a game (this year we'll play Northern Iowa, Idaho State, Portland State, Sacramento State, and North Dakota) , plan to come a couple of days early or stay a couple of days after the game. You will appreciate this advice.

Believe me, there's amusing criticism to be had there. The place looks like a Soviet era Olympic site that was abandoned and restored.

It also bears a strong resemblance to a sewage treatment plant.

Your "dome" looks like a mall without Sears or Dillards. ;)

Well, since NDSU has started in the FCS, the Bison have played 42 FCS teams. Going to add one (UND) this year in the regular season. I'd like NDSU to play all of the remaining 83 FCS teams.

Of course, something is going to have to change to get any of the non-playoff-participating teams on the schedule.

BTW, when I was researching this, I got to wondering which FCS team played the most FCS teams (NDSU doesn't have far to go to get into that top 10):

One reason I hate regionalized playoffs. Add in that most conferences are represented by the same teams, it's hard to see new opponents.

UNI saw SFA and Illinois St this year. With more wins we would have played EWU, UNH and NDSU who we have played before.

Interesting stat...quick check, HC has played 44 different opponents who were once, now or defunct FCS programs. I always like playing new teams. HC should play some SoCon schools (Furman, Citadel, Wofford etc) moving forward.

One place people should see a game, particularly in October, would be at Dartmouth....glorious that time of year.

That would be a very long list. I don't even know what the streak is up to now. Probably somewhere between 400 and 500 consecutive McNeese games in a row home and away..

Not sure where you got these stats but a quick check of recent schedules and a UNH Media Guide gave me 52 schools that were I-AA/FCS at the time UNH played them. Fifteen of them in the playoffs. I'm guessing they didn't count the now FBS programs like UConn, UMass, ODU, etc. nor defunct programs like Boston Univ., Northeastern, Hofstra, etc.

If you don't have Poly on your list, you should. San Luis Obispo is one of the great places on earth and the California Central Coast is absolutely beautiful.

You don't need to go to a football game to enjoy the Campus the town, the area. If you have a chance, you should visit San Luis Obispo. And if you do come for a game, plan to come a couple of days early or stay a couple of days after the game. You will appreciate this advice.

It's good to know the mayor is also a fan of FCS football.... not that I disagree with him

Have you been to the Battle of the Piney Woods game in Houston (at NRG/Reliant Stadium)? I visited my brother in Houston last year the weekend that game was played and gave some thought to going but ultimately passed. (To be honest, I don't have too much interest in seeing Division I-AA/FCS games that don't involve Lehigh, Lafayette, Penn, or Villanova, though the SHSU/SFA game would have been a good matchup.) We did give serious consideration to going to the Texas A&M game in College Station that day (which the Aggies almost lost to Louisiana-Monroe) but didn't want to get around as early as necessary (11 AM kickoff, 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive), plus we already had tickets for the Celtics/Rockets NBA game that night. I did get to Reliant Stadium the next day for the Eagles/Texans NFL game (the reason why I visited my brother that weekend).

Now for my "I always **** on NDSU potion of my post" - it's worth the effort to get there.

They like to brag about their tailgating and everything. I've been to a couple games there and here's my take away - the tailgating, individually, is pretty good but nothing, again individually, is stand out "can't miss". What makes the NDSU tailgate worth going to is the fact that NDSU was smart in how they did it - force everyone into a couple joined lots on one side of the building. That's the biggest advantage NDSU has over other tailgates. EVERYTHING is in one spot, so while nothing on it's own is can't miss, the entire atmosphere is just built extremely well. Most other places I've been (FCS, FBS, D2, D3, and NAIA) all force their tailgating to be spread out because of donor lots and needing a pass to be there, student's in the student parking lots for campus parking, the "general" public on the other side, etc... It creates 3 or 4 separate tailgates at the stadium, which takes away from the atmosphere. There's no intermingling of students, "big" donors, and "regular" fans.

In stadium the band is a little above average for the bands I've seen but is far too quite to get the full effect of it in the stadium. Maybe it it could be heard it would do more for me. I thought maybe it's just because of the stadium they are quiet. However, they were in the UNIDome and were the same volume. The band is a huge part of the fan experience in the stands and I wish I'd gotten more of that in my trips to NDSU. The "in-game" PA and pump up stuff is fairly standard in every stadium with some NDSU specific wrinkles. HOWEVER, the pregame entry/tunnel run is executed perfectly, down to the development of an app to be used on smart phones for the sole purpose (there might be more uses of it I guess, I've never downloaded it) to be used during the pregame entrance. I don't know that there is anyone that can come close to touching that entrance in the FCS. UNI could get a toe, maybe a foot, in the same ball park if the roof didn't let light in (the Fargodome gets pitch black) and the lights take way too long to turn back on to make it worth it.

TL;DR - not much of it is stop and make your jaw drop on it's own. The entire package that is a NDSU game day though is top notch.

UNI has 44 that are FCS this coming season. If we go to the "start of the modern playoff format" departures/no longer existing programs it's 51

Have you been to the Battle of the Piney Woods game in Houston (at NRG/Reliant Stadium)?

I've only missed one since it has been at NRG. I travelled with the team and had an all access pass last season. BOTPW will never be the same for me, that was such a great experience.

Good to hear you were able to enjoy the full BOTPW experience last year. Based on the teams you listed, I would have been very surprised if you hadn't been to one of those games.

Keeping in mind that both Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin are both public schools, the fact SHSU and SFA can play the Battle of the Piney Woods at a neutral site, NFL stadium not particularly close to either campus and still draw 25K for every matchup shows me that after last season's Lafayette/Lehigh 150 game those two schools could probably do something similar in Philadelphia or New York/north Jersey if they wanted to on an annual basis and probably draw similar numbers. (They routinely sell out the games at both Lafayette's 13K Fisher Stadium and Lehigh's 16K Goodman Stadium.) I personally wouldn't advocate they do that (and I expect all of the Lehigh and Lafayette fans on AGS probably feel stronger about that than I do), but playing L-L at a larger neutral site say every 10 years or perhaps even every 5 years is probably viable attendance-wise. (I'm unsure I'd personally want even that level of frequency - every 25 years is more like what I have in mind - but I can't say I'd totally oppose the idea of somewhat more frequent L-L games at bigger neutral site facilities.)

I notice that while some FCS stadiums have a lot of history, a few of the older ones appear to have been completely demolished and rebuilt. Indiana State and Valparaiso, for example, don't have anything resembling their original stadiums. Otherwise, they would be something to see.

I did get to Reliant Stadium the next day for the Eagles/Texans NFL game (the reason why I visited my brother that weekend).

it is pretty cool to have the game there and it makes it easier for me to catch a game.

Spent last year's game in a suite. Gotta make sure it happens again.

I'm still bummed about missing this year's game

I've pretty much just gone to home games at Coastal Carolina. My user name is justly deserved, right?

The next stadium I want to visit is Liberty. They have the best atmosphere in the Big South (imo). I'm surprised people have put CCU on the list but not them. Us locals would love to have you come visit and stay a few extra days at the beach (you keep our taxes ridiculously low), but Liberty is probably a better pure football experience.

Okay, Jay Gallahger, I got my media guide out and made my list. Of course, in looking at all those places we played in the last 30-40 years, I realized that CBuck has made every one of those games and been to all those places. So my list would look puny compared to his.

First, current conference stadiums I've been to:

Central Ark (more than I thought was fair)
UIW
Lamar
Nicholls
Northwestern St
Sam Houston
SLU
SFA
and, of course, McNeese

Other places starting with some of the old Southland Schools that have since moved on:

La. Tech
Northeast La (ULM)
USL (ULL) Not technically correct since they didn't drop down to I-AA with the conference at the time. But it pisses their fans off so I included them.
UTA
Ark. St.
SWT (Texas St)
Prairie View A&M (at the Astrodome)
Weber St.
Troy St.
Jacksonville St.
Youngstown St.
Portland St.
Southern Utah
Alcorn St.
Ga. Southern
Grambling
Southern
Montana
Florida International
Texas Southern (probably not technically correct since the game was played at Northwestern St. during the Hurricane Rita year in 2005)
South Dakota St.
UTSA
Ark-Pine Bluff

I may have forgotten a few but that is all I can pin point right now. Remember, I'm an old fart and my memory isn't what it used to be.

As far as some of the places, I would like to go

Frisco (with McNeese playing in the game)
North Dakota St.
UNI (no, I never made it up there to a game).
Delaware

I'm sure there are others I can eventually think of.

Edit: I tried to include only places that were IAA/FCS at the time we played them and does not include any schools that were FBS when we played.

If you get a chance, go. I've been to every one at NRG/Reliant. The tailgating is great. It is usually a high scoring game. And inevitably you get to see fools from both schools who rarely tailgate make *sses out of themselves by getting smashed in the parking lot. Plus you get to check out a pretty nice pro stadium...

If it doesn't mean that NDSU is forced to travel in the playoffs, here are the places I'd like to see NDSU play at:

Top 10: Lehigh, Lafayette, JMU, Villanova, Delaware, Georgetown, New Hampshire, Yale, Harvard and McNeese State.

Some thoughts/insights about the schools bolded above:

Lehigh - I absolutely love the gorgeous, open setting at Goodman Stadium, with the fields, trees, and South Mountain nearby (and I-78, though you can't see it too well from the stadium, or at least the home/west side of the stadium). In all honesty, the setting has to be one of the best in Division I-AA/FCS. The concession are pretty good too; there are some food stands with grilled food to purchase. The only negatives from my point of view are 1) the seats are set further back from the field than necessary (as Lafayette fans are quick to point out), especially considering that putting a track around the field wouldn't make sense considering the setting, 2) the sound system is subpar and there is no video board, and 3) if it rains, you may need to walk through a muddy field to get to/from your car and the stadium.

Lafayette - another very good stadium with a different kind of setting than Lehigh that is also very good. Parking in Easton's College Hill and walking a few blocks through the neighborhood to Fisher Stadium is an enjoyable experience (except in the dark on an uneven sidewalk), and if you park at Lafayette itself, you can walk on the campus (the stadium is near the campus' north end). Also, if you sit in the home/south stands you can look out at the forested hill north of Easton (and see the setting sun for a night game too, though you will have some glare issues for twilight games). Because there is no track, the seats are close to the field giving up a good view of the action especially if you sit higher in the stands. The only negative for a visiting fan is that there aren't many seats on the visitors' side (as any Lehigh fan will tell you). Fisher also has a good video board.

Villanova - IMO it's kind of amazing what Andy Talley has been able to do over the last 30 years out on Philadelphia's Main Line when you take a look at Villanova Stadium. Honestly, it resembles a large high school stadium more than anything else, though the food stands in the east end zone are charming to me (and contribute to the high school-like feel in a positive way). The field was clearly moved a few yards relative to the stands, and some of the "newer" stands at the east end are pretty far from the action. By far the biggest negative is there is a track around the field and none of the stands are high enough to give you a good angle to view the game. On a more positive note, you can stay in Center City Philadelphia and easily get to Villanova using public transit (either via the SEPTA Market-Frankford Line and Norristown High-Speed Line or via the SEPTA Paoli/Thorndale Regional Rail Line).

Georgetown - I really hope you are kidding, because Multi-Sport Field might be the worst "stadium" in Division I-AA/FCS. The football stadium where I went to graduate school (Division II IUP) was considerably better, and Division II/PSAC fans in Pennsylvania think Miller Stadium is one of the worst stadiums in the PSAC. Heck, the football stadium where I went to college as an undergrad (Division III Juniata) has much nicer home side stands than Multi-Sport Field. Other negatives include the very small size of the facility (capacity about 4500), lack of permanent restrooms (though they do have high-end port-a-potties that are halfway acceptable), limited number of concessions, and lack of parking in the garage and on Georgetown's campus in general. There is also no Metrorail access anywhere near the stadium (or Georgetown's campus or the Georgetown neighborhood for that matter). On a more positive note, the seats put you near the action, and the neighborhood near the stadium is nice. It's also cool to walk through the arch when walking from/to the parking garage that the players come through.

One other thing - depending on the schedule, you can sometimes see a day-night football doubleheader at Lehigh and Lafayette, especially early in the season. (Actually, the same is true at Villanova and Penn; BTW Penn's historic Franklin Field is definitely worth checking out IMO.) Lehigh's Goodman Stadium does not have lights (all games there start at 12:30 PM ET), and Lafayette likes to schedule mostly night home games (start time 6 PM ET) the first third to half of the season. I've actually attended a Lehigh/Lafayette day-night doubleheader 4 of the last 5 seasons, and there will be two such doubleheaders this season, on Saturday 9/19 and Saturday 10/3. (I plan to attend the Lehigh and Lafayette games on the first of those two dates.)

I am with you on the baseball parks. If my memory serves me correct I have been to Boston, NYY (old/new), Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Tampa Bay, SF, Oakland. Had tickets for Toronto, but didn't make it up there. But would love to hit up a bunch of the Midwest ballparks soon, esp. Cincinnati, Pittsburgh.

It's looking more and more likely that I will be attending the Lehigh-JMU in Harrisonburg. I'd like to compare the JMU game experience to NDSU, Montana, Montana State and Delaware. Those five are about as good as is gets in FCS.

Didn't come for a game but while on our drive from Orange County to San Jose with two alum friends (UNH72Plus and a non member), we stayed one night in Morro Bay. We stopped at Spanos Stadium for a look. Very impressed with the memorial to the guys that died in the plane crash! Also noticed that the biggest guy was 220!! A different game in a different time. Looked like a great place to watch a game and the area was definitely beautiful. I hope everyone gets to drive the Pacific Coast Highway one day!!

I try to visit MLB Stadiums on my trips to the FBS games, but have had a bad run of teams being on the road. That happened on my visits to Chicago, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland and San Francisco although I did tour AT&T Park. I managed to see the Twins at Target Field on my Minnesota trip.

When my 60th birthday was approaching and I reflected on things, I realized that only one of the MLB stadiums where I had watched a game that only Fenway Park was still being used! It really surprised me the rest were gone!! (Pre and post 1975 Yankee Stadiums, the Mets Shea Stadium, the Phillies Veterans Stadium, the Orioles Memorial Stadium, the Pirates Three Rivers, the Indians Municipal Stadium and Seattle's Kingdome.) I rectified things by getting a couple of alum buddies to join me for games at Citizens Bank Park, Camden Yards and Nationals Park. The tentative MLB 2016 schedule has the Red Sox at San Diego on Labor Day so hopefully get to notch another MLB stadium next season when UNH plays at San Diego State.

Glad to get JMU checked off my list! I must admit though, I was more impressed with the campus than the stadium/game day atmosphere....

I plan on getting to Princeton on Saturday for the first time since 2003.....

Cornell, well Ithaca, was actually the first place I ever saw Yale play on the road. 1974.

Been to:
Fordham (Love my school, but awful stadium)
Lehigh (2nd best in PL, just a gorgeous field with great natural grass)
Lafayette (Best PL Stadium in my opinion, love how it feels like it's in a valley)
Colgate (Remote, cool to drive to get to)
Georgetown (Dump field, but location in the middle of campus is very cool)
Holy Cross (Great stadium, would be so much better if it could be filled)
Bucknell (Cool shrubbery pattern they have in one endzone...coldest MFing place ever, nothing to break the wind)

Columbia (Great field, bad team, should definitely go to it if you're in Manhattan ever)
Yale (Just felt the history being in the place)

Villanova (Eh, such a good team should have a better stadium...but it's what you get at such a basketball school)
UNH (Very average place, but filled up for playoff game last year and was a great blustery weather'd atmosphere)
Towson (Very nice stadium and athletic complex, wish the stands were a little closer to the field, that would make a much better atmosphere)

St. Francis PA (Middle of nowhere, and feels like it)

FBS
Rutgers (Wasn't expecting much, but was a very nice stadium. Obviously compared to other B10s it's minuscule, but I enjoyed it)
Cinci (Thought this was a very cool stadium, love how locked in it feels)
Army (West Point is all it's cracked up to be. Must visit for CFB fans)

Been To (FCS):

Holy Cross
William & Mary (Attended a game annually from 1993-2005 and returned in 2012 for the Lafayette "lightning game")
Fordham (seem to always fill the place for Holy Cross and Villanova; saw the two playoff games vs. SHU)
Colgate (28-27 loss in the "Patriot League Championship" in the snow in '08)
Bucknell (Ancient place; was here for a blowout HC win in '07 and disappointing loss in '09 after already clinching league)
Lehigh (Attended the worst home loss in Engineer history 59-10 at the hands of the Crusaders in '07)
Lafayette (Here for the Hail Mary that kept our title hopes alive in '08 and a William & Mary thrashing of the Pards 3 weeks ago)
Georgetown (Saw HC win here in '08)
Harvard (0-2 here with the tougher pill being our '08 loss blowing a game where we led 24-12 in fourth w. ball on Harvard 1yl)
Yale (Saw HC lose a thrilling comeback attempt that culminated w. OT loss in '08)
Dartmouth (Saw us beat the Indians handily during their winless '08 campaign; Ivy campus I most desire to return)
Brown (Attended two Columbus Day thrillers -- one win for HC, one for Brown)
Northeastern RIP (HC blowout in a driving rainstorm in '09 -- The Huskies' last team)
UMass (Three W&M games and a 40-30 HC loss in a game we trailed early in the third by four touchdowns in '07)
UNH (With QB Mike Cook injured, Tribe suffered a painful loss here in '97 ranked #2; must see HC game here)
URI (Four W&M games here during the '90s / turn of the century)
Villanova (HC only road playoff appearance, a 38-28 loss to eventual champs)
Delaware (Can't remember who won but went to OT vs W&M in 2000)
Towson (Visited last week for the Crusaders three-point loss; cousin is a student)
Columbia (Randomly went to Homecoming game vs. Dartmouth last year)
Princeton (Attended a Dartmouth game at the old yard in 1996; last Dartmouth Ivy title and undefeated season)

FBS Been-To

Army (at least 1-2 games a year from '94-'01; returned for Stanford in 2013)
Georgia (59-24 over W&M in '88; was a baby)
Virginia Tech (W&M opener in ' 14 on Labor Day weekend)
North Carolina (W&M led 31-21 in the third in '04, wound up on wrong side of 49-39 score)
West Virginia (another FBS upset attempt by the Tribe in '13; 17-7 lead turned into 24-17 loss)
Boston College (A wild 32-31 victory by the Naval Academy in the late 90s; OBVIOUSLY returning in 2018)
