UND is now accepting nickname ideas for the month, and I guess they'll use this as a list to decide from with their committee.

It frustrates me that the high school is going to prevent UND choosing what is the obvious choice. I'm gonna be an Oiler or some stupid marketing gimmick. Roughriders would at least have some pride and the puns would be amazing.

Well, they thought of it almost 50 years ago, why the hell can't they keep it? UND has had decades to figure out a new name. Not RRHS fault.

I'm fine with sharing it and there is nothing to stop it. But it's beneath UND to take a high schools or some crap.

I'm not sure why a high school should keep the university from choosing a name that represents them.

Cedar Falls had a private school that was the "Cedar Falls, Northern University Panthers"...granted it was run by UNI.
Iowa City has the University Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa City High City Hawks...use the exact same logo
Ames has the Iowa State University Cyclones and the Ames High Little Cyclones

Neither of those are university related.

Like frozennorth said, is there so little imagination that they just take the name from the high school?

Imagination be damned...

If it fits and has support who gives a damn if a high school has it.

Look across the NCAA - you'll see there is almost no imagination...

The 12 most used names of four-year college teams: Eagles (76), Tigers (46), Bulldogs (39), Panthers (33), Knights (32), Lions (32), Bears (30), Hawks (28), Cougars (27), Pioneers (28), Warriors (27) and Wildcats (27). (This is ignoring adjectives such as purple, black, Nittany etc...)

I never truly understood North Dakota's claim on Teddy Roosevelt. He basically moved out west on some call for adventure when he was young, stuck around a little while and tried to use his new bona fides in his political career then left after a bad winter.

He never did anything particularly great when in ND nor were any of the Rough Riders FROM ND.

He basically pulled a Poppy Bush (or other way around) and tried to position himself as not from the upper crust of New England for his political career.

In the end, they most likely will go with a name that maximizes merchandise sales; i.e., a unique name with a unique trademark-able logo.

It just has to be something the people in INDIANapolis, INDIANa won't find offensive to Native Americans.

Grab onto an official state symbol (the state horse) and confuse the heck out of people - UND Nokota.

I like this idea, but the Big Sky Conference already has two schools with Mustang mascots (UC Davis and Cal Poly)

I think we should sell the name for advertising revenue like soccer teams do: "North Dakota B-Dubs" or "North Dakota Red Bulls"

No matter what we choose, alumni and students will be upset, so we might as well make some coin...

Davis is the Aggies - mascot doesn't really matter
Poly is the Mustangs
UND as the Nokotas

Thinking Davids or a Nokota would be the same as a Mustang nickname is like thinking Georgetown has a bulldog nickname

Also not bad.

I was thinking, on my way in to work this morning, about working aviation into it somehow. Hadn't thought of Flyers. Was thinking Pilots, but Portland has that already...would be interesting. Jets seems too unimaginative. Aviators isn't too bad.

So far I'd go with

This is exactly what I expect will happen. They said the nickname options will go to a public vote with no nickname included. I fully expect Sioux fans to go with nothing so they can continue to cheer for the Sioux and wear the jerseys. It will be mostly hockey fans voting and they're not changing even if a new nickname is passed. It will be 20-30 years before the fans stop saying Sioux in Grand Forks.

Roughriders - Theodore Roosevelt's first U.S. Volunteer Cavalry organized that fought in the Spanish-American War. Roughrider State was the state promotion in the 60s and 70s.

Green Geese - Referenced to Kenmore Geese population, but it's still unique as an animal reference. Just throw in the green reference to help own it.

From an old thread on Bisonville:

Well, I've come up with tons of good nicknames on this board and they haven't taken me up on any of them:

1. The Llamas

Pros: Looks like a goat from the back and who doesn't like llamas?
Cons: Doesn't kill Indians or bison

2. Las Chupacabras

Pros: Eats goats and Montana fans said our mascot looks like a goat wearing a shawl - you do the math
Cons: Eats goats

3. Small Pox

Pros: Killed a lot of Indians*
Cons: Sounds awfully close to an uncomfortable admission

4. Future Fargoans

Pros: Strikes fear into the hearts of NDSU fans
Cons: A mascot wearing a pizza delivery uniform is not very intimidating

5. Honyocks

Pros: It's in the tradition of obscure nicknames like Hoosier, Buckeyes, Sooners, Hawkeyes, Cornhuskers, etc that might have been insulting at one time, also the word apparently originated in North Dakota
Cons: Could be construed as a racial epithet - also, Honyocks describes a certain kind of farmer (and farmers are the last people UND wants to be associated with)

6. Honkers

Pros: According to some UND fans, the Canadian geese better represents North Dakota than bison
Cons: None

7. Mooninites:

Pros: Two mascots for the price of one, one is green, one is pink
Cons: Rendering 8-bit graphics will cause UND's super computer to smoke

8. Storm Troopers

Pros: They already have costumes for their mascot
Cons: They don't want anybody to remember they already have costumes for their mascot

9. The Prince Symbol (to represent the Team Formerly Known as the Sioux)

Pros: Take that, NCAA! and the Prince Symbol would fit on a helmet.
Cons: You don't want to piss off Prince

10. Sims

Pros: Good way to spread the message that 1/4 of their enrollment "attends" UND without ever setting foot in North Dakota and/or Grand Forks
Cons: Will just be begging people to insert a "p" between the "m" and "s"

* Apparently, a large number of pro-nickname have gone from saying how much they honor the Sioux to wanting a mascot that used to kill them

Also considered: A Syfy-movie-monster-of-the-week tie-in (so one week they'd be the Sharktopus, the next week they'd be the Pirahnacondas.) Also, anything with the word "Mullet" in it.

UND's Under Consideration List (http://und.edu/nickname/consideration-list.pdf) has I'm guessing close to 5000 names on it, so 1172 might be the unique count.

They also have a List not under consideration (http://und.edu/nickname/non-consideration-list.pdf) with maybe 12,000 names on it, over 5000 being "Fighting Sioux"

Lakes and I have a mutual Facebook friend and we were responding to a post about this. He admitted to some of the names. It wasn't hard to do submissions so the only real impediment would have been his lack of wit.

Funny thing is a majority of the non-consideration list are serious submissions by UND fans. Mostly various versions and misspellings of Fighting Sioux.

Somebody suggested the Bears because no team in UND's conferences uses that name. Guess Northern Colorado doesn't count.

Nope.......sorry to say it, but Grizzlies isn't an option....

From the non-consideration list:

Grizzlies

Grizzlies

Grizzlies

because grizzlies are fierce

Grizzlies

It shows fierceness and strengh. It represents the northern United States. I don't believe another college has this name??

Grizzlies

Lewis And Clark discovered their first brown bear in North Dakota.

Grizzlies

on Lewis and Clark expedition first grizzly or brown bear was found in ND

Grizzlies

Predator of the bison, shows strength. Mascot that can be fierce but also a fun, unifying character.

Turtle Lake?

What about "The Turtles"....You could have Michaelangelo or Raphael as the mascot. They're already kinda green...

Haven't looked at all of the pages, but here are some of my suggestions;

Roughriders - Theodore Roosevelt's first U.S. Volunteer Cavalry organized that fought in the Spanish-American War. Roughrider State was the state promotion in the 60s and 70s.

Frontiers - kind of self-explained with that.

Green Geese - Referenced to Kenmore Geese population, but it's still unique as an animal reference. Just throw in the green reference to help own it.

Lakers - Lake Sakakawea, Turtle Lake, Devils Lake, etc

Rockers - Seemed to be a lot of historic rocks there (through research)

Funny thing is the aviation program is one of the few places "Sioux" is still in use by the university. It's the FAA approved call sign for all their planes at the flight school. But, this being UND, there's still controversy.

http://www.bakkentoday.com/event/article/id/35442/

Dean of aviation claims they tried to drop the Sioux name and the FAA refused. Exact quote “We’ve tried to retire it a couple of times,” and “In all cases, the FAA has asked us not to change it, and the reason is for safety.”

FAA spokeswoman had this to say in response: “They just need to talk to us and get it approved." “But there’s been no request for change that we know of,”

In addition the FAA made UND temporarily stop using Sioux for a week in 2005 after a pilot claimed confusion between "Sioux" and "Two" over the radio.

The nickname committee has narrowed down the listing of names under consideration to 64. This is going to be a tough pill to swallow - not many on there that I can get behind right out of the gate, although eventually I'll be cool with whatever.

Highest vote getters (all got 4 or higher):

Nodaks – 7
Force - 6
North Stars - 6
Pride - 5
Spirit - 5
Sundog(s) - 4
Big Green - 4

Cavalry is probably a bad choice because too many people, especially around ND prounce and spell it Calvary (which is an entirely different thing).

Nokota will probably end up in a lawsuit with the Nakota people.

That would be like becomeing the Soiux ;)

Aviators would be neat and unique. I still think it should be something winter related, change your primary color to blue.

Please not the UND Cavalry because it's been put forth as a "screw you" to the tribes.

"We were honoring the tribes with the old nickname, but we're saying 'Screw you!' to them with the new one at the same time that we are claiming that the tribes actually want the name to stay."

At some point, you have to get your story straight.

UND Cavalry marketing idea.

Retire the Sioux mascot once and for all by having a Sioux mascot run onto the field before the first game, only to be chased and cut down by a saber wielding cavalryman.

Heads would explode.

I have the feeling I will not like the name choice whatever it is. Hopefully it will be one that can grow on me.

Thought to share something about "Indian" names. Let me start by saying I find nothing wrong with The Fighting Sioux as well as the Fighting Irish. Now the Lying Sioux or Irish is a different matter. When will the political correctness stop. Has anyone thought to take the city of Baton Rouge to task.. Baton Rouge is French for Red Stick. A red stick was a perjorative used to decribe the local indians for many many years. A letter writing campaign to Governor Jindall seems appropriate. Perhaps the National Assoc. of Cities (or whatever the correct name is)should expel Baton Rouge if the name is not changed.

I'm going to damn near guarantee that two of the three finalists are Roughriders and Spirit.

Every single name that I have liked or thought I could warm up to quickly has been eliminated. I liked Norse/Norsemen and Roughnecks the best, but could have lived with Badlanders, Drillers and a few others that are no longer around. Not sure I even like any of the remaining finalists, with the exception of Cavalry and maybe Explorers I guess. Roughriders would probably be fine if not for the local high school having it. But, it is just a nickname so I'm sure I'll get over it.

I don't think it's a great idea to go without a nickname, and NoDaks can easily be turned into something else by the opposing fans. North Stars to me is a Minnesota and/or hockey thing (which is why it has support from some of the "hockey only" fans). Fighting Green - really? And what's with the love affair with XXXXX Hawks. Three variations of a hawk? And all the stupid inanimate objects.

If the MVFC goes Big Sky route, and at this point I think they should, and goes from 10 to 12-14 teams I would say there is a good chance (assuming UND can find a way to mend whatever bridges are broken) and there is an eastern team or two added to cancel out another team in Canada

I doubt if that will go. I think they will just stick with North Dakota if they want to do that.

They do seem rather intent on running off the edge of a cliff, don't they? Maybe they should be lemmings.

Flickertails. Cute little buggers, the state's nickname, original nickname at UND. This would have made too much sense.

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to co workers today talking about how they think they should just change how they spell sioux and call it good.

I propose that we change the name of 15 from fifteen to failteen.

Anyway, I'm very disappointed that Badlanders isn't on the list.

You'd think they'd pick Nodaks or Roughriders, but they are all about the hockey so North Stars and Force (the name of the minor league hockey team in Fargo) will get a lot of votes.

Nodaks just seems lazy. We couldn't think of anything so we just shortened the state name.

I have Cavalry as second, however, many people spell it/say it wrong and it becomes Calvary. I also don't like the shortened name, Cavs. And The U. Of Virginia is very similar with Cavaliers.

One of North Dakota's unofficial nicknames is the Roughrider State, along with the Sioux State, and Flickertail State. Official nickname is the Peace Garden State. Also, the highest award the State of ND gives out is the "Roughrider" award. I know a local HS also has Roughriders as their name, but no one outside of ND knows this school exists in GF or that their name is the Roughriders. My choice is, based on what is left, would be Roughriders. This also seems the easiest to market, come up with logos for, etc.

In all actuality, many were submitted. A committee then threw out many of them. I think the University of North Dakota Roughriders is a pretty decent option. Can also be shortened to 'Riders. There's w CFL team and some minor league teams with the name, but no other University or college uses it.

The problem with Roughriders is that it was, literally, the first name kicked out by one of the Native American individuals who opposed the Sioux nickname and fought to take it down. For that reason alone I see Roughriders getting resistance from long time Sioux proponents.

I think it ends up being Cavalry.

What the hell do they have a say in this for? The name that not many affected opposed is gone so I guess I don't get how they get to weigh in on **** that has nothing to do with the old name? I mean they should be able to weigh in as any other individual can but other than that, nope.

I don't recall that. If anything, the Cavalry should be the one that's eliminated as it was the Cavalry that fought the Native Americans. Anyone remember Custer?

Teddy and the Roughriders fought in the Spanish-American war. The Roughriders were also part of the volunteer cavalry.

Btw, the definition of a roughrider is "a person who breaks in or can ride unbroken horses." I know there are other urban dictionary definitions that aren't very flattering, but that shouldn't eliminate a name for consideration.

This is simply more of the same ruse to make it look like they are following the "process" when in reality they are not going to have a nickname and simply stay as North Dakota so the alumni and fans can remain the Fighting Sioux forever.

I hope the NCAA follows the letter of the settlement.

You misunderstand what he meant. You're both saying similar things.

What Yote meant:

Ron His Horse Is Thunder was a primary nickname opponent(he was Standing Rock tribal chairman when UND needed approval).

Ron HHIT proposed Rough Riders (or Roughriders) as an alternative nickname.

Fighting Sioux nickname supporters hate Ron HHIT because of his nickname stance.

Therefore, Fighting Sioux nickname supporters will hate Rough Riders because Ron HHIT proposed it.

I don't necessarily agree with how many might share that view or how fervent they are with it, but that's his argument why Rough Riders might face resistance.

Or more simply, he was using "kicked out" as a synonym for "proposed" and not "eliminated from consideration".

University of North Dakota North Dakota? Are you ****ing serious? Please tell me that means they will continue to go strictly as UND with no formal "nickname".

Spirit? Sundogs? Thunder Hawks?

JFC, UND. You make it so easy for people to dislike everything you do and just hope that everything turns out a failure so we can make fun of you.

I've gone from a UND defender to just hoping everything UND touches is a disaster all because it seems like everything always has to be some sort of big ordeal with a bunch of whiny dicks behind it.

You have a chance to get one thing right, one thing that is going to be extremely vital to branding your university going forward. If you pick something like "Spirit" or "Thunder Hawks" or "Sundogs" you deserve every bit of negativity, backlash and failure you get

Luckily, you don't have to hope. All you have to do is grab your popcorn, sit back, and relax.

Yes, that's correct. Exactly what I said. I can't remember who it was but one of the opponent of the nickname said that UND could just use, oh, Roughriders, as an example, as a good replacement name for Sioux.

My take is that I don't know if it will go over so well for long time Sioux supporters to have the new nickname glossed by one of the people who fought to take the Sioux name down. I would think they would be in favor of choosing something on their own.

About a million dollars worth. Its so tragic that its almost laughable.

It's the same problem they had earlier when trying to decide to move on (before the dumbass Al Carlson stuck his mug into the mess). Nobody wants to be stuck holding the hot potato when the music stops.* Look at the hatred for Kelley even though he had no choices in what he was doing. To many in the Fighting Sioux Hockey camp, he is the guy who killed the nickname. Doesn't matter that the die was cast even before he first set foot on campus. Everyone involved just wants to drag out the process long enough that they can get someone else to take over and have those new guys' names stuck forever to the mess.

Do you remember the committee that was formed to negotiate with the two Sioux tribes just after the settlement with the NCAA was finalized? Something like 2007 or so? The Gov and the US Congressmen were so supportive of the process and the lawsuit right up until they were asked to be on the committee. I think they left scorch marks running away from those requests. I think the Gov ended up sending a junior administrative assistant to be a non-voting observer or something. It was pretty funny at the time.

*apologies for the mixed metaphor

Meh. They should have told the tribe to pound sand and kept the Sioux name. Im 1/4 Blackfoot and dont give two ****s about a football teams name.

Well, the tribes never asked for anything during and after the settlement process, so I'm not willing to throw all that much blame their way. Mostly they refused to even come to the table. Standing Rock in particular. They just ignored the whole thing. It's impossible to have a negotiation when one side wouldn't engage.

As for keeping the name without approval, it was technically an option. UND would not have been allowed to wear FS uniforms for NCAA playoffs and championships; not a huge deal. They wouldn't have been allowed to host NCAA playoff or championship events, but that would have only affected hockey and football(and they still would have been able to host conference championships). The only real problem would have been their placement on the NCAA "bad guys" list. They have a list like that(don't know if anyone is on it right now) and they have a suggestions list that encourages other schools not to schedule them. I think it's called "best practices" or something.* That could have caused UND problems. Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin had already expressed an unwillingness to schedule UND in multiple events.

Also, if UND had full-on challenged the NCAA on this, I'm not sure how willing the Big Sky would have been to take them on as a member. They didn't have many problems inviting UND when they were still working within the framework of the settlement, but I don't know if that would have stayed the case if UND was blatantly giving the NCAA the finger. Would have been one heck of a risk for UND to take.

*here was the quote:

The committee also strongly suggested that institutions follow the best practices of institutions that do not support the use of Native American mascots or imagery. Model institutions include the University of Iowa and University of Wisconsin, who have practices of not scheduling athletic competitions with schools who use Native American nicknames, imagery or mascots
