Just finished watching the UNI game on All-Access. The Panthers did what they needed to do. UNI upset the #6 Redbirds. Now it's up to the selection committee to figure out that UNI is INDEED one of the BEST 16 teams in the country.

I know that ISU has one heck of a team, but the Panthers really wanted this one. IMO UNI is the TOP 7-4 I-AA team in the nation, and deserves a playoff spot. :nod:

No way I see UT-Martin getting a home game. I can't see them coming in with anything above a minimum bid and Martin, Tenn. is probably one of the toughest places to get to of any city in I-AA. I would expect Illinois State to have an extremely competitive bid on the flip side. Remember, bid numbers are what will get you a home game, not a better record.

PSU lost to both conference clubs above them, UNI beat the conference teams above them. This is the I-AA play-off, not the IA play-off. Imagine the NCAA rewarding a team for scheduling three IA games. Shameful :nono:

Matt, UNI went 5-2 in the Gateway which is argueably the TOP I-AA confernce in the country. PSU, playing in the Big Sky, has had it a bit easier this season, and they have ZERO quality wins.

UNI has wins over #5 YSU and #6 ISU. If the two teams played against each other, I would bet on the UNI Panthers to beat PSU eight days a week. The Panthers ARE playoff worthy, and IMO more so than a 7-4 PSU team. :nod:

Unfortunately, the committee probably doesn't share your opinion. That loss to North Dakota is what ultimately will keep Northern Iowa out of the playoffs. The committee almost always penalizes teams for Non-D-I losses. Florida Atlantic was a rare exception, with a loss to Valdosta State in 2003, but the Owls were 9-2 and had a win over I-A Middle Tennessee State (a week before losing to Valdosta State).

Like I said, UNI's administration scheduled them out of the post-season. But fair is fair ... scheduling up is as bad as scheduling down. The difference is one brings more $$$ ...and that should not be rewarded; sets a very, very bad precedent. Let's face it, if there were the usual compliment of 8-3 (or better) clubs, neither of these two would be a minor consideration for the post-season.

Every Gateway fan on this board will have differing opinions about my post, I'm sure. I love that we do partake in "Any Given Saturday." However, the fact of the matter is that the Gateway is just not as solid this year as we have been in the past. There is way, and I mean wwwaaaaayyyyyyy too many different, supposed inferior teams winning games against the alleged top dogs of the conference.

Some will call it parity, and I respect that. Where is the parity in the Big Ten? Ohio State does not beat a Michigan team (example) and then go on to lose against Northwestern. It just doesn't happen. OSU is the better team and takes care of business.

Meanwhile, we see my squad go into the UNI dome and easily handle the Panthers, squeak by a horrific Indiana St. team (game could have gone either way), and then lose the season closer to a fairly awful Mo St.

All I'm saying is this...don't give me the 'Gateway is a great conference full of great teams whom any of which may win on any given weekend' BS.

You want proof? Take a look at my WIU squad this year...horrible, and I mean HORRIBLE defense, and we hung in for some 'respectable' scores against our conference's 'elite'. You simply don't see this happen in other conferences such as the Big Ten (born and raised in the Midwest...primary example) where the better team wins week in and week out.

Anyone disagree? Put the $$$ where your mouth is. My bet...the Gateway, with three (Youngstown St., SIU, ISU) out of 16 teams represented in the playoffs, has absolutely no chance of any one of them making it to the finals. From everything this season has indicated...NOT A CHANCE!!! Post a reply and I'll throw down on any wager involving the dollar bills.

Head to head in conference doesn't prove how good you are against other conferences. There are indicators in non-con schedules, although most of these games are usually early in the year and don't show how much a team may have progressed during their season. My gut instinct is that if you are betting against Gateway teams this year, I'm glad it is your money and not mine.

UNI played a great game against Iowa St., should have beaten them like we should have beaten K-State; however, the game is never going to come out of the loss column (unless the NCAA takes it away for some illegal participation).

UNI beat YSU and ISU, and I was very impressed with the Panthers. Personally, I think they should be in, but I probably don't give the D2 loss as much weight as they do.

Who knows, we'll see in a little bit what happens.

I understand where you are coming from with this argument, as it can be the only one applied. How does one gauge the talent level of a Notre Dame team who competes week in and week out vs. 'other' teams?

My argument is simply that an elite team will win games (especially in conference) when they are the better team. Simple as that. Looking at the Gateway games this year, there are no elite teams and I think as a whole, we are fairly weak.

SIU losing to WKU. YSU losing to UNI. ISU losing to UNI.

You look at what teams have done in conference, and while you are correct, this does not indicate how one will fare vs. another conference, it is a very good...the best indication of how good a team really is.

The Gateway will not have a representative in this years 1-AA Championship. There you have it.

If the Gateway fans on here are going to continually boast our conference as 1-AA's best year in and year out, then it needs to be proven on the field during the playoffs. It's really quite simple.

I dont think anyone on here has said that the Gateway is "1-AA's best year in and year out" (First off, did'nt get the memo? Try refering to it by its proper name, the CS now, NOT I-AA), most of us just believe that Gateway is a strong conference in comparison to most of the others, it is a really good conference, but not necessarily the best, and the Gateway DOES have the playoff appearances/performance to back that rap up. SO basically it seems to me that you only judge conference power based on if a team from the division wins the National Championship?

The Gateway has a solid, balanced conference just about every year. There is no argument there. The fact is that we boasted a few good (at best) teams this year...but nothing great. I simply put a bet out on the table and no one bit. It's obvious that people are in agreement with me on this topic.
