View Full Version : Patriot League "Advantages"?

From another thread unrelated to the topic of Lehigh's football future:

Georgetown has some serious advantages that they have chosen not to exploit. That's on them. They are not now, and have never been, picked on nor singled out for abuse by the Patriot League. Woe is us ain't gonna cut it anymore.

So what specific advantages do PL teams have that others do not?

To the point above, Georgetown can't exploit selectivity because of its AI, which is mid-Ivy level compared to a Fordham. It can't exploit yield without scholarships. It has a brand name, sure, but not in football. If Georgetown got rid of the AI and had 15-20 scholarships it could offer as it saw fit, it could make some noise, but that's something the PL will not allow.

So if the PL got ride of the AI, or seriously loosened it, would Georgetown add those 15-20 scholarships?

If Georgetown so chose, it could recruit a certain number of elite athletes close to the "floor" of the AI that don't necessarily have perfect boards but could be deemed to be able to do the work at Georgetown. If they ever combined that with merit-based aid, combined with the institutional prestige that is Georgetown, it would be a powerful tool towards building a very good FCS football program. After all, that's exactly what Harvard has done.

the league moving to a league-wide AI is what prompted us to force the scholarship issue since we were told that both moves would happen at the same time and then the league bailed on scholarships. When did things switch back to a school-by-school AI?

This. While obviously on a smaller scale, it seems to work for the basketball team.

Except the general consensus is that Harvard is allowing lower-AI basketball recruits at the expense of their other teams (namely, hockey and baseball). They used to be good in hockey and baseball, and but lousy in basketball. By giving basketball priority for AI slots, that's completely changed.

I don't think Georgetown has that flexibility being a football-only member of the PL.

The floor is league-wide, not the AI. As I understand it, each school's bands may be different - but all are subject to the floor.

Not really. Harvard's advantage is in their full scholarship equivalent model.

As far as I understand AI is done for each school and vetted by PL. The floor is as 137 said PL wide.
137 when does the dead period for recruiting start? Thanks

What? I thought this thread was going to be about a new Patriot League MasterCard rewards program. Never mind...

Love the Gtown sour grapes, a program that chooses not to compete and thinks others should feel sorry for them. LFN's point is accurate, other than all those AI "floor" spots are already occupied by the folks on their hoop team. No problem if that's how they choose to prioritize... just take your football drubbings & be quiet about it.

Again, Georgetown basketball has nothing to do with this.

Again, Georgetown "chooses not to compete" by funding at the level of some Ivies.

Again, Georgetown's higher admissions standards for the regular student body mean that the AI floor is higher at Georgetown.

Why would the PL care about teams that play in the Big East?

Offer football scholarships to kids that couldn't otherwise get into your schools.

That's the advantage in one sentence. But PL admins have chosen not to and that's fine.

No. Their overall bands are higher (as at Harvard), but Georgetown could, if they so chose, get a qualified athlete who they think could do the work who academically is as low as the Patriot League floor (as at Harvard in regards to their AI floor).

Hoops is completely irrelevant to the AI and to football.

Even if that is true, the number of players allowed under the lowest band is small. Don't know how the PL bands are allocated but in the Ivy, only two or three of 30 annual slots reportedly can go to those in the worst band.

Is there any chance that GU football could get some alumni contribution or endowment toward the program, as Princeton did with its wrestling program?
