This could have been avoided.

Is the reason for this the reduction of traveling time and expenses?

The NCAA just doesn't have the funds to support the extra travel. It's a non-profit you know...

Maybe I am confused, but thought all the regionalization started due to 9/11.

No, this pre-dates the 9-11 tragedy. It has been there 'forever' to some degree.
It just seems to be more prominent since they expanded the field so much.

Wish they would find a way to avoid re-matches until at least the quarters. I'm ok with conference matchups as long as they didn't play each other during the season (ala SELA and SHSU playing in the opening round).
