View Full Version : Selective Stat Comparisons of Playoff Teams

I am playing around with Excel again. I wish I had the time to learn the Google docs stuff, or get as handy with posting tables in AGS as some of you guys are, as these are not as readable as others. But I barely have time to entertain my football obsession. Nevertheless, I think it is interesting to look as some comparative stats for the playoff teams once the field is set. I figure I will share my curiosities here. If you guys are doing some comparisons, throw them on this thread as well.

I know stats don't tell the whole story. If they did, we could assume SLU was going to win the championship handily based on what is posted below.

But since we all know OFFENSE wins championships, we can actually give the crown to EWU today! (Kidding, you MVFC defense junkies!)

All kidding aside, I always find it interesting to see what some of these comparisons that must be taken with a grain of salt show us. For example, Ten teams in the playoff field are top 20 in all of FCS in scoring defense. Eleven are top 20 in scoring offense. Four of the teams are top 20 in both!!!xeekx SLU owns the biggest point differential of all teams by more than a field goal. And the Sycamores have the lowest differential of any team in the field.

What does it all mean? Nothing, really, but things that make me go xchinscratchx as we all know it will only truly be settled on the field.

By request, here are SOS rankings for the playoff teams. I used Massey's, but there may be others worth considering as well, in particular, Sagarin. I will have to try to get to those later. But for now, hopefully these can be useful in helping to understand on what kind of schedule these stats were achieved.

We also rank highly in total defense and total offense, plus a number of internal statistics. Offensively, we're up there in rushing offense, team passing efficiency, yards per catch, yards per play, sacks allowed ... on defense, we're up there in rushing defense, defensive passing efficiency, yards allowed per catch, yards allowed per rush, yards per play allowed, interceptions gained, red zone defense ... and on special teams, kickoff returns, blocked kicks and field goal percentage.

But I agree, stats don't always tell the story. We stumbled around and had a bizarre loss at SEMO and tried to rest our QB and couple of others at SFA, and it backfired. Otherwise, we're in the top four like last year. We made our bed and have to battle our way through the playoffs on the road, but if we're hitting on all cylinders, we'll be a tough out for anybody in the field.

I know some coaches have a philosophy in which controlling TOP is important. To others, it is not as important in their style. I believe it is important to NDSU, and they are number one in all of the FCS in TOP.

It isn't as important to EWU, yet, we are one of the top teams in all of FCS in TOP. But I think we've had to work harder to get our scores this year. I don't think it is the result of a conscious decision that I know of.

Great thread. Hard to know the story behind all the numbers, but it helps put meat on the bones of all the subjective posts you read from team to team.

Re: JMU - TOP - it's not a philosophy so much as the Philly Eagles-style fast-paced offense. I think this is a small part for the lackluster defensive stats. In reality, our D has created turnovers, which has been the major difference maker in several close games. Or teams just can't adjust to the speed of the offense (snaps that is, not players necessarily though we have good speed). In the early part of the season, so many 3-and-outs really put the team in a hole early. The second half of the season as the offense caught up and Vad Lee learned the system, it has been a completely difference story.

But those are critical stats about JMU's team: TOP and TO margin. For example, look at JMU vs. Richmond on TO margin for a window into the 55-20 romp a couple weeks ago in Richmond. Did JMU give up a ton of yards? Absolutely. Did it matter? Hell no. xthumbsupx

Couldn't really be a more stark contrast from what Mickey Matthews was running in a control the clock, limit possessions to limit mistakes to win mentality.

What does this mean? To me, JMU could beat anyone in the field, but JMU could also lose to anyone in the field. While it's true for any team, I feel it's particularly true of the Dukes due to their style of play.

Yeah, when I saw those stats, I wondered what the story was behind them. For example, MSU jumped their TO margin up significantly in their game against UM yesterday with 7 turnovers given up to one takeaway! Sometimes, it's just a bad game. Stats can be very misleading in that sense. Nevertheless, they are interesting to look at. The way you guys are heading into the playoffs, you're really coming on strong at the right time.

I think this might be getting a little detailed, but it is interesting to see some of these percentages. CCU and Richmond don't seem to go for it on 4th down unless it is almost a certainty they will make it. EWU and MSU have made the most, and second most 4th down conversions in the FCS this year. I think both teams can gamble a bit more. But though both teams have solid 3rd down conversion percentage, they are almost 20% higher on 4th downs. I think when we go for it on 4th down, it keeps the defense we play against off balance, and demoralizes them when we convert. It seems to be a momentum type of thing for us. And it seems to work well.

Good information, thank you! I've started looking at Richmonds game against Liberty to see how we stack up.

I know I shouldn't go ahead and give them the win but, Morgan State won't move past Round 1.

Great points. With our D out there in some cases 5-8 minutes more than other playoff teams, Def yards per game allowed it misleading. Case in point, everyone agrees EWU has a terrible defense and JMU looks to be very similar. However, there yards per minute on the field are very different:

EWU - 15.6 yards/ minute
JMU - 12.9 yards/ minute

If JMU's D was out there the same amount of time, we would give up 364 (80 yard difference) while if poor EWU was out there the same as JMU, it would give up 517 yards..... Essentially, we look to be, in terms of yards per game on Defense, middle of the road which I would expect. We have our moments and do a great job of creating turnovers but by no means are we stingy like a NDSU

Turnovers were a major problem for Richmond this year. They fumbled the ball away inside the one yard line against UNH, Villanova and JMU!

Anyone who watched the UR/W&M game realizes what a different team the Spiders are if they hold onto the ball. I noticed when Seth Fisher rumbled into the end zone he had two hands on the ball the whole way in. (He fumbled into the end zone twice against JMU for touchbacks).

Even more interesting W&M was +14 UR -17 before the game but we won the TO battle 3-0...

If that continues, we may be ok...

Here are a few more stats I find interesting. Based on these, UNI's D looks terrifying! They are stifling, disruptive, and effective. It looks like they spend a lot of time in the backfield, and are very effective at stopping drives.

Add to that the fact that EWU has allowed the most average sacks per game...that could be a tough matchup of both teams make it to that game!

Well...there's a good picture of EWU! One of the top in Red Zone Offense percentage. But the lowest in Red Zone D! Yikes!

The other day, I was watching an NFL game, and the sportscasters were talking about a stat for one of the teams they called, "Explosive Plays." They described this stat as plays of 40 yards or more. I wish they had this stat for FCS somewhere, as I would love to see EWU's performance in that area. EWU rarely goes for FG's, yet there are teams that have scored more TD's in the red zone than we have. I think that EWU has a knack for the big play. And many of our scores are from outside the redzone. It doesn't appear to be as frequently as last year, from my perspective. But that would be a cool stat to see. BTW, my understanding is that we have never failed to score in the red zone this season, except when we've taken a knee to run out the clock.

I don't know how much credit SHU is getting as a tough opponent. But their RZ defense numbers are unreal! Could it be a computer error? It just seems crazy to think they allow far less than half of red zone trips to end up in scores, and are over 25% better than the next playoff team in that category (they are almost 20% better than the next team in all of FCS).

It is also interesting to note that scoring defense standings do not necessarily correlate to strong red zone defense standings in these stat comparisons. Of course, then again, when you look at the total scores allowed, you realize some of those teams, like NDSU just don't let people into the red zone often enough! But when they are there, they score more frequently as a percentage than against SLU, LOL.

The Big Sky Conference website has a "conference only" stats option. I'd imagine other conferences do as well.

BTW, I went back and looked at our numbers in just the games Vernon played and they are very close to the actual numbers although Vernon played against the meat of the schedule too.

Great work in this thread, Dude.

I thought about the conference only stats, but then I'd be leaving out some FCS games as well. Seems like FCS stats are going to be somewhat skewed no matter what. I sure would love a way to see FCS only including noncon games.

Pretty much. Looking at the stats, the first thing anyone would deduce is that Indiana State doesn't belong. Then you look at the fact we had the #1 SOS, played 2 FBS schools and our conference schedule bye was against the worst team in the conference this year. Thank God the selection committee drills below the surface.
