Isn't that 50% capacity though? For Ivy football, which is perceived by its leadership to be a step above the NESAC, that's a solid number... a Friday night too. I think 4,000 turned out for a Princeton Friday night game a few years ago... I went to the Colgate game in 2009 on a Thursday... place was nearly empty.

lol...I tried but only could get to Grendel's at 5:30 to rally the troops.

I thought it was a pretty good crowd overall....I was in Section 6 and it was largely full. I couldn't get a full perspective of the visitor's side but it seemed fairly full from the 10 yard line to the 10 yard line in the closed end of the Stadium. Would have thought more than 15K+ actually.

BTW $8.00 sausages and $9.00 cheeseburgers??? Is Haaahvid really that hard up these days??? xrotatehx

UWA (Formerly Livingston) was a conference rival in D2, but they are a very small school with very little fan following. They didn't even bring their band. We had a pretty good home crowd, and it was "Band Day," which probably accounted for 2,000 or so.

That said, the crowd was probably down a bit from what it would have been because Alabama was playing Florida at the same time.

That's the way Coastal's fans are as well. Older and more conservative in their cheering. We'll occasionally get a little noise on third downs, but otherwise it's quiet. We've actually had instances of people telling fans to sit down so they can see while sitting down.

The "Yell Leaders" wearing all yellow suits standing on ladders are located in front of the student section. For the most part NDSU fans are really good at yelling when NDSU is on defense and being pretty quiet when NDSU is on offense. Most fans only yell when NDSU is on defense and it is 3rd down. I like to yell the entire time NDSU is on defense. Probably why I don't have much of a voice the next few days:-)

I was driving back from the Fargo area on Saturday night listening to a replay of the game and the post game show they said that a local electronics store had some equipment set up on the field level and measured the volume at 114 decibels.

I remember 6 years ago when I was in school, early 2000's, and it was never very loud. The UNI game in 2011 is when I think the light bulb turned on in all of the fans heads that we could have a bug impact on the game. Bohl also did a great of talking about the importance of the crowd noise the week before big regular season and playoff games. I think it was even pretty loud in Frisco, Fargodome south, the last few years.

Wasn't MSU's stadium only in the 15k range 5-10 years ago? Yes I know they expanded recently.

My point is: was the waiting list to get into Bobcat Stadium really that long? Were they really turning away 4k+? So, where did these fans come from so quickly?

Bozeman's county has around 95k and Billings' county has around 165k (which is about 140mi away, city to city). Is that where most of these almost 20k (including the new ones) are coming from?

Comments:

- The Fargodome has 18,700 seats (though I wouldn't be surprised if the actual number of seats wasn't this whole of a number), any time attendance reaches that level it technically counts as a sellout or "filling" the stadium.

So I didn't say that the opponent must be UND for the stadium to be "filled". I claimed that the opponent must be UND or SDSU for the attendance to reach 19k+.


If 18.7k fit in the seats, then 19.1k means that 100 people are standing in each corner between the seating sections. I don't know what the maximum legal capacity of the dome is in football configuration, but that must be close.


- The regular season games that have eclipsed the 19k threshold are:

2013 homecoming game - two time national champions, undefeated, beat Kansas St, SDSU and UNI
2012 homecoming game - defending national champions, undefeated, beat Colo St and UNI
2007 homecoming game - defending GWFC champions (10-1 season), undefeated, beat Central Mich
2006 de facto Great West championship game against "new" rival SDSU
2014 season opener - three time national champions, undefeated, beat Iowa St *(you missed this one, it was 19.02k)*

I suppose this year's homecoming will break the record again so long as NDSU stays undefeated. They have a bye this week and only have to beat WIU in Macomb to get to homecoming against SIU. Should be doable, but WIU is always a tough team.

And if the attendance is 19.1k+ for that game, it will come very close to push the season average attendance to 19k. Not sure if they'll be able to maintain that over the rest of the home games (IN St, SDSU, Youngstown), but that would be something.

It's been a grass-roots thing from all over Montana. We have had a state-wide booster board of directors for some time with chapters in 11 cities including my home town of Glasgow, which is starting to pay dividends both in scholarship funding and attendance. (I'm the chapter President BTW) There is now a group of about 20 from here that make the weekly trip, this year with 7 home dates.

Great Falls is also a hotbed for Bobcat fans, (Site of our annual spring banquet and game which draws over 1,000 boosters). Great Falls is only a 3 hour drive. Butte and Helena are a little over an hour away, so there is a big draw from those communities as well.

And to answer another question, there wasn't a waiting list when we expanded the south EZ and added about 4,000 seats. The admin took a chance that if we built it, they would come, and it's paid off especially with the students. They have there own space right down on the field now and it's the place to be unlike the 1990's and 2000's.

As I recall, we were generally selling out most of our games prior to the expansion, but other than Cat/Griz and maybe homecoming, I'd say we were barely averaging a sell-out. The expansion took us from about 14,300 (?) official capacity to 18,777 (?) official capacity (too lazy to check my numbers right now). That's a significant increase percentage-wise In addition, the students agreed to move to the new endzone seating, opening up prime sideline seats. What that ended up doing was to essentially make all of the increased seating capacity in the more expensive areas.

I thought it would take several years to reach sell-outs on a consistent basis but it didn't. We don't sell-out every game, but pretty close.

If precedent is any indicator, the 2014 homecoming game against SIU should be in the 19.1k range (assuming they take care of business the week before in Macomb).

The following week they host IN St. Not sure if people will get up for that game against such an inferior opponent (sad to see how far IN St has regressed so quickly after Miles left).

Down to USD after that and then the Dakota Marker game against SDSU in Fargo the following week on Nov 1st. I'd like to think that an undefeated NDSU will draw in the 19k+ for that game, but it depends on external factors I'm afraid.

Two tough road games at UNI and MSU. NDSU's first road loss in years could well come at one of those games, depending on injuries at that point in time.

If they manage to stay undefeated at that point, then there's no telling what the attendance will be for Youngstown. If they do lose, that will deflate it a bit.

But a 19k season is possible.

All rivalry smack aside, it's awesome to see two thriving programs in the state. Had a blast at my first game in Bozeman last November.
