Central Connecticut football pregame coverage from the Hartford Courant and New Britain Herald:

Pete Rossomando Ushers In A New Era At Central

By MIKE ANTHONY, [email protected]

NEW BRITAIN — The first thing Pete Rossomando had to do was learn the names of about 75 players. That was the easy part.

In the seven months since being hired to resurrect the struggling Central Connecticut football program, he has had to establish new expectations, implement new schemes, introduce new language. He has recruited and finalized a roster that has 40 new faces, changed the position of several players and implored everyone in the program to buy into his vision and accept his style.

It has been a complicated offseason in New Britain. The first step in an effort to shake things up always is.

CCSU football seeks quick change under Rossomando

By MATT STRAUB, New Britain Herald

NEW BRITAIN — It will be a few months before the success of Central Connecticut’s new-look football team can be judged. What is already clear, however, is how quickly CCSU wants to turn things around, and not just in the win column.

Whatever happens to the Blue Devils this season, both good and bad, will happen quickly. The Blue Devils will be on the move this season. This much is certain.

New coach Pete Rossomando has worked hard to change the culture of the CCSU football program, but the most tangible difference between the previous coaching staff and the new one will be the offense, which will now be a frenetic, rapid-fire series of plays designed to get into open space and down the field quickly.

Bristol's Holmes ready to help lead Blue Devils

By MATT STRAUB, New Britain Herald

NEW BRITAIN — Tyrell Holmes has long been a mature, responsible young man. He has had to be for his family’s sake. So it makes perfect sense that Holmes has become a leader on the football field as well. One of Central Connecticut’s four captains for the 2014 season, Holmes is ready to help lead the Blue Devils on the field and in the locker room on the way to what he hopes is the best year of his career.

CCSU opens at Towson tonight

By MATT STRAUB, New Britain Herald

If Central Connecticut wanted the chance to see where it stood right out of the gate with its new systems under first-year coach Pete Rossomando, there are few better places to start than at Towson. The 2013 national FCS runners-up will provide a stiff challenge and a taste of what CCSU would face if it won the NEC and made it to the FCS playoffs.

“It’s a great program,” Rossomando said of Towson. “It will be a great challenge for us.”

The Tigers will also present a huge clash of styles as compared to the Blue Devils. Towson is big and physical, while the Blue Devils hope to be fast and explosive.

I know this isn't the same team as last season's National Finalist, but this was a very impressive win by CCSU. If the Blue Devils didn't make a few mistakes, this wouldn't have been as close as it was. Not sure where, but I would think this might earn CCSU a top-25 ranking.

- One year ago, Towson beat UConn 33-18 in East Hartford. Tonight, CCSU wins 31-27.

- Towson had won 11 straight games when opening the season at home. The Tigers had not lost at home in a season opener since 1991.

- Since 1993, Towson has opened the season facing Central Connecticut twice, winning both times. The Tigers defeated the Blue Devils 42-7 to start the 1993 season and opened with a 20-10 win over CCSU in 2007.

- At #7, Towson is the highest ranked team CCSU has ever beaten. In 2006, Central Connecticut beat #19 Georgia Southern in their only other win against a ranked team.

- This is the 2nd CAA win for Central. Last season, the Blue Devils beat former NEC foe Albany in the first season in the CAA. CCSU faces Albany and URI this year.

- CCSU outgained Towson 465 to 315 in total yards, including 273 in the air and 192 on the ground. Central held a 33:55-26:05 advantage in time of possession.

- Rob Hollomon finished the game with 161 yards on the ground, 48 receiving and 68 return yards for 277 all-purpose yards in the victory.

- Junior quarterback Nick San Giacomo finished the game with fantastic numbers, completing 22-of-29 for 273 yards and a pair of touchdown.

- Senior Tyrell Holmes had four receptions for 102 yards and a score.

A great wrap-up in the Hartford Courant

Coach Ros is the man...and I'm fully scared for what he's going to bring next week against Albany. Wow.

"Give credit to Central Connecticut," Ambrose said. "They came to play and knock off the supposed big boy, and they did just that. ... They played very, very hard, they made plays when they needed to and they did a great job. But they didn't beat us. We lost. And there's a big difference. We didn't get our butts beat. We lost. We made too many mistakes to win."

"A good win," Rossomando said, as is his understated nature. "We worked hard."
"It's one of 12," Rossomando said. "It's going to be a fun bus ride home, and then we're going to move on to Albany [next week's opponent]."
"We believed the whole time it would be a dog fight," Rossomando said. "This is a group that wants to win."

Not sure I agree with Ambrose's quote - sounds a lot like sour grapes. CCSU made as many or more mistakes than Towson.

Dane - Yep, Coach Ross is all business. We couldn't have hired a better coach. IMO, this guy is going to do great things here.

I really hate the "they didn't beat us, we lost crap". You were beaten, the other team showed up and beat you. Suck it up and move on. Maybe go buy a new diamond stud earring to make yourself feel better.

Very good win. Congrats.

This is why I don't vote for week 1 games. No one knows who is good or bad before a team takes the field.

Disgraceful performance by the Towson defense, and once again I feel it is more on the coaches than the players. There is still a lot of talent on D. To give up 465 yards to anyone in your home opener, let alone CCSU, is nothing short of awful. I've said it before, it bears repeating now: Hachmann (D-coordinator) has to go.

Coach Ambrose made some comments like that after last year's National Title game. I also don't like to hear the excuse of we didn't get beat we lost the game. Maybe just maybe the other team had a lot to do with them losing.

Congratulations to CCSU on the big win.
