ISU's defense was horrible last year and I don't expect them to be markedly improved by today.

The Cyclone offense will probably move the ball some but I suspect our defense will be just fine.

Our O-line needs to play well today. They have a good game this game will be a 2 TD win for the Bison. ISU could not stop the run last year and the Bison will exploit that.

The Bison have lost a lot on both sides of the line. It's hard to replace those guys, they still have talent there, but the question is how long it will take them to gel. I think it's going to be a close game.

Very impressive performance by NDSU today. That second half was pure domination. Bison don't seem to have missed a beat at all. The only real weakness I saw from the defense, if you could call it that, is that it seemed that NDSU had trouble containing their mobile QB at times when he took off and ran.

I am not sure if it has been listed elsewhere, but here ya go...

2014 W Iowa State 34-14
2013 W Kansas State 24-21
2012 W Colorado State 22-7
2011 W Minnesota 37-24
2010 W Kansas 6-3

2007 W Central Michigan 44-14
2007 W Minnesota 27-21
2006 W Ball State 29-24
2006 L Minnesota 9-10

8 for 11 with 2 losses by 3 points or less by a school that was playing DII in 2003. Unfrickingbelievable.

You know how they call moderate Republicans a RINO? I think I am going to start calling NDSU a FICO...FCS in name only.

In games where the QB isn't a HUGE running threat that has been a weakness of NDSU since I was a freshman in '07, possibly earlier. That being said, it hasn't been a dealbreaker very often.

Congrats on setting the new standard for wins in a row by taking down yet another P5 football program. Was hoping that there'd be a bigger drop-off in talent from last year (yes, I have on my blue/yellow lens), but sure didn't show it vs IA St.

New win, and great show on how to play with Big Boys. Seriously, I think it'll take a top 15 FBS team returning a lot to knock off Bison in first game of season. As your rival and move-up partner, you're a tough group to measure up with. Good thing about WBB! LOL.

Where NDSU will beat EWU is on offense. The EWU defense is pretty ave at best from what I saw against SHSU. Now teams improve as the season goes along but it will take a FCS team with a very good defense to beat the Bison.

Here's a couple ridiculous stats in the USA Today article about the Bison today after their win at Iowa St:

The Bison own the nation's fourth-longest active winning streak against FBS competition, trailing just Florida State (15), Michigan State (10) and UTSA (six).

North Dakota State has five wins against the FBS since the start of the 2010 season. Kansas, on the other hand, has just six.

Any rumblings about NDSU to FBS? Seriously.

Rumblings from fans? Yes. Rumblings from people outside NDSU? Yes. Rumblings from within NDSU? No.

Our admin are always looking at the situation, but I don't think this changes anything. Also, we don't have an athletic director at the moment, so a major decision couldn't be made in the short-term anyway. Our biggest problem is a lack of nearby G5 conferences. The Mountain West won't consider us because we are too far north and east(and we're too small). The MAC looks at us as too far west for a fairly compact conference. Too far north for the Sun Belt, and there's no point talking about the AAC or C-USA.

As a school, we're taking a wait-and-see approach. We're waiting to see how the first couple years of the P5/G5 shakeup goes. If things stay roughly as they are, I doubt we would move without some outside pressure. If things mildly change and create a better environment for us in the FBS, then I think we'd start to look at a move. If there are wholesale changes that result in a full split between the P5 & G5, then I think you'd see us push for most/all of the MVFC to move up as a group.

Any rumblings about NDSU to FBS? Seriously.

There's a vocal minority amongst our fan base that pushes an FBS move at every possible moment but most of us (at least I think it's "most") look at the move with some trepidation because there's no good, logical, geographic conference fit and there's a lot of doubt about whether its sustainable financially. NDSU would be a west outlier in the MAC (and in an undesirable league), an east outlier in the MWC, and, despite some media pundits and fans beliefs, not Big 12 material with the TV market and facilities.

On top of that the figure I heard for a yearly athletic budget increase was $5M. That's about a 30% increase over what its at now and, despite being in a state that's flush with cash, NDSU is in a spot where they won't be able get money from the state or raise tuition due to the ND State Board of Higher Education wanting to avoid "little brother syndrome" developing amongst the other state funded institutions (which consists of waaaay too many schools for a state the size of ND). It's a tough row to hoe in an ultra-conservative state.

After all that, I think in order for an FBS move to be sustainable financially there needs to be a new stadium built which is likely a $100M+ project if it's an outdoor stadium or at least twice that for an indoor stadium.

Personally, I feel like NDSU isn't positioned to make a successful move unless some geographic peers (like Montana, MSU, SDSU, or UNI) agree to make a move together. Perhaps that will happen if the P5 start their own subdivision but there's a lot of hurdles for NDSU to make a unilateral move to the FBS as it currently stands.

The correct answer should be that the other state institutions should be moved under NDSU and UND as satellite campuses. This will probably push enrollment at both schools to about 20-25k. Additionally, we need investment both in NDSU and UND to increase capacity to 20k students on the main campuses. As for the stadium we need to figure out a way to make the FargoDome bigger to 25-30k.
However, ND legislature is not pragmatic at all, they are just going to sit on billions of dollars and not have the state grow. Also there are enough UND grads in the ND legislature to throw a spanner into any kind of funding request NDSU will come up with. If we move to the FBS it will have to be done with NDSU money, no ND state money or Fargo money.

It is rapidly growing. +7.6% in three years(2010-2013). +12.6% over last 13.

The thing is, the state is trending younger for the first time in probably a half century. The K12 schools up here are absolutely exploding. I'm not saying the state will break 1 million by 2020, but it wouldn't surprise me. Probably by 2025 or 2030.

Just watched the replay of this game.

What a frickin beat down, esp in the 2nd half. The Bison O-line, with 4 new starters, completely dominated a Big 12 D-line. Plankers #70, didn't start but really crushed people in the 2nd half. Kelly and Schueller also did a good job. Hinz, the center, needs to clean up some of his holding....had 2 flags on him. Overall, the O-line did very well. Looks like there are 8 O-lineman that can play right now.

From watching other FCS games this weekend, there is not a team that would scare me right now. IMO, for any FCS team to beat the Bison they are going to need a very good defense to stay with the Bison running game. Just stacking 8-9 guys in the box to stop the run is not going to work, it will take a team with very good LBer play to fill gaps and cover the TEs and RBs in the pass.

I cannot wait for the Montana match up in a couple of weeks. After watching the Griz/Wyo game, the Griz better bring their A game to even make it close.

One of Hinz's holding calls may have been legit but lost (due to the fact that Morlock had a 66 yard TD run a few plays later) was that the holding call on Hinz in Crocketts 79 yard run was completely bogus. It was super late and on the replay all he did was dive at the knees if the defender he blocked (who wasn't engaged up top so it wasn't clipping either). Didn't change things in the end but he definitely got a raw deal on that call.

I saw that also and went ballistic when they said he got called for holding. In the end it didn't matter and every team has to put up with crappy reffing at some point but in a close game a bad call like that could end up costing you big ala NDSU 2010.

It wouldn't have mattered how fast the defender was, they would have been trucked by Haeg or Bonnet running alongside Morlock. As for Morlock, his speed is not an issue, and he looks fast . . . faster than Frasier IMO. A good mix of skills for the bison RB's . . .

Crocket: Has it all, size to pound it, speed to run away from you.
Frasier: Looks like a grinder, and can move the chains, doesn't appear to have break away speed, but we'll see
Morlock: Good quickness on the edge, can make you miss, can go the distance
Anderson: Screens, jet sweeps, edge runs, very quick

As far as I am concerned, P5 refs like cooking calls against G5 and FCS. This game could have easily been 50-14. Also believe UNI should have won its game and there was a lot of cooking going on.

One of the best comments by a sportswriter I've seen from Saturday's dismantling of ISU by the Bison.

Beware the Mighty Bison! When will FBS teams learn? For the fifth straight season, FCS-level North Dakota State has knocked off an FBS football team, with Iowa State becoming the Bison’s latest victims thanks to a 34-14 (http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/08/30/five-peat-cyclones-latest-fbs-victim-for-north-dakota-state/) beating in Ames. NDSU actually trailed 14-0 early in the second quarter before ripping off 34 straight points in ISU’s humiliation. The fact that the Bison pushed around one of the big boys from a Power Five conference is far from surprising — or at least should’ve been. Despite losing its head coach (http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/12/08/craig-bohl-confirms-hes-leaving-nd-state-for-wyoming/) to Wyoming, NDSU is the FCS preseason No. 1 and have won the last three championships (2011-13) at that level. The Bison have won 24 straight and 43 of their last 45, including a season-opening 24-21 win over Kansas State in 2013; a 22-7 win over Colorado State in 2012; a 2011 win over Minnesota by the score of 37-24; and, finally, a 6-3 win over Kansas in the 2010 opener. All of those wins against FBS teams, including Saturday’s, came on the road. If FBS teams are looking for an FCS cupcake, might I suggest North Dakota instead of North Dakota State?
It's official: North Dakota State has more Big 12 wins over the last three years than Kansas—

Eh, the dominating fashion of the win says it all. Otherwise, Iowa State truly is not that good. Although I can't wait to see NDSU pound the teams of some people here who think anyone would beat ISU.

So...there's this

Something is wrong with the Iowa State football program. That much is obvious after starting right tackle Jacob Gannon quit the team two days before facing Kansas State. He’s the third to do so (yes, one returned) in the last nine months. This is a pattern and it’s a sign of a systemic issue and the program can’t turn around until it is resolved.Gannon and defensive tackles Austin Krick and Brandon Jensen all walked away from the Cyclones. Yes, Jensen returned, but he was pushed to the point where he felt leaving was his best option. This is a huge problem and it goes beyond injuries, ineffective play and play calling. You can’t look at the departures and the team’s 4-14 record over the last two-plus seasons and not think the two are related.- See more at: http://amestrib.com/sports/la-gesse-column-gannon-s-departure-illustrates-larger-problem#sthash.uuEDLF55.dpuf

Rhodes out before the season is up. Doubt they'd have Mangino come in, he doesn't seem to be able to handle the top spot.

He'd be the perfect fit for the ISU football program if you think about it.

Lot's of hype around their fans (ISU fans always think this is their year and Mangino followers always think he'll turn it around - also see Charlie Weiss
Can't seem to handle any kind of pressure
He'll demand a huge salary and Iowa State will pay it
Both will fail - and will come as a shock to no one except Iowa State fans in point 1.

ISU is on the hook for Rhodes through 2020 at 2 mil per season if he is there or not.

Wow I hadn't heard that but if he did leave it brings up lots of questions. Only the players and coaches who know what's going on on the Inside can really say or decide. In the history of sports there have been many many bad coaches or should I say coaches who didn't have a good win loss record. This doesn't make them bad people just bad coaches. I'm going to lean towards giving a bad coach the benefit of the doubt before I side with a player leaving just because of a losing record. If all players did that we would have no sports to watch. Just to bad the young man chose that path but he will live with the choice right or wrong. But as the article alluded to one other player who left his team and that's all he's remembered for. I'd rather stay and stick it out and be remembered as a guy who gutted it out as opposed to one who walked out on his team mates.

I was thinking that very same thing. Glad he ended up where he did though. Not sure Coach K would have stayed number 1. Secondly that would put him smack dab in the middle of our recruiting footprint and we didn't need that. As it is if he can make a winner out of Wyo hell he ought to be able to write his own paycheck at his next gig.

Anyone else notice the sections that were solidly us are now devoid of visiting fans? It's not even that far.

the UdeNIers are going to have a tough time if ISU plays them tough or wins.

Rest assured, it will happen. ISU will run out of steam in the second half. The bad call on the catch and giving up the late TD will take a little momentum.
I predict a KState comeback and win.
