You are right. Furman certainly didn't let a closer-than-expected win over PC spoil their season.

Still, I think Mercer's honeymoon of winning all of these wild home games is going to come to an end real soon. Their offense just keeps bailing out what has otherwise been a objectively bad defense the last two years. They don't stop the pass and they don't stop the run.

Surrendering 460 yards of offense and 42 points to an NAIA team at home is not going to get it done in the SoCon.

Tough to win when you cannot run the ball or stop it.

Muss left the cupboard very empty so lots of Muss players out there. Bubba will try to do a lot with very little.

If the team I saw in the FargoDome last year is better now...xnodx

Furman was the best team the Bison played in the playoffs last year. They could be a contender this year.

As a fan jumping ship to ETSU next season, I'm worried that may also be true for the Bucs in their first three seasons back. The SoCon is chock-full of teams who belong to two sides: those with playoff potential and those with cellar capabilities. I'm not sure where to pigeonhole ETSU for the preseason 2015 predictions. Note that the Bucs 2015 schedule has a D3 and a NAIA on it.

ETSU should at least get their feet wet. Mercer probably did it right by easing their way into a tougher schedule, but investing heavily in facilities early.

Yet the FCS had the largest number of wins over the FBS ever during the 2013 season. Including 2 over P5 conference members.

28-0 MN crushing EIU

http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=400547960

Minny wins 42-20. Wasn't able to watch the game but going off the box score our o-line was undermatched vs. a tough Gopher defense. Whitlow obviously showed off his running skills but Manley is going to be the more polished passer. Panthers also out-gained Gophers 409-338 in terms of offensive yardage. Next week's game vs. SIU will be a good gauge for how both teams will do the rest of the season.

I was at the game. The Gophers were not impressive. I thought that the passing game was suspect- too many times the running backs were getting hit at the mesh point- and I don't remember a real drive all game. EIU made too many turnovers and had chances to make it a game. I liked the diamond formation of four receivers left, then the backward pass to the deep man in the diamond and the throwback. I would have run that formation again and thrown it to one of the other receivers.

They announced 44,000- I would say that there was about 20,000 less than that!

I believe tonight's struggles can be attributed to two QB's getting used to what is probably a more complicated pro-style offense. Babers already had an experienced QB when he became coach in plus the spread is easier to learn/run. Back to the 2 QB idea, I do not like it. I understand Whitlow is a good runner but I believe Manley needs to be THE guy. Use Whitlow as an extra weapon and you're set.

Agreed, did not see that happening. Bryant, from all appearance was rebuilding after the graduation of RB Jordan Brown and others. The Bulldogs had a .500 NEC record the past 2 seasons and was picked to finish 6th this year - ahead of only St. Francis. I know that CCSU was outmanned by SBU back in 2012, but that was part of our disappointing last 3-years.

In any case, a HUGE win for Bryant and the NEC!

Thats some mighty sweet Kool Aid youre drinking there. Mercer is well set to
be competitive in a few years, but right now the reality is the top 2/3 of the SoCon can handle Mercer with their second strings. In fact if you allow an NAIA school to hang more than 40 on you you can pretty much assume that your only hope at a win this year is against VMI, and that's a long shot.

Still, Mercer's defense really has not shown it is capable of shutting down an opponent. Mercer's offense has been good, but they are going to have to do more than read option against Furman. Furmans DEs are fast enough to cover the QB without help (see: Furman v. SCSU in last year's playoffs).

I also wouldn't discount what this game means to Furman. Football players love to send messages. I imagine Furman will want to let Mercer know they are in the deep water now.

TD Cuse! This qb looks pretty good. A dicey PI call kept the drive alive....
The PI call was bad. The ball was 10 yards over the receiver's head and uncatchable.

68-yard return set up by a great Don Cherry block. Most guys would have called for a fair catch on that punt. 17-14 Syracuse.
