Saturday August 30

Wagner @ GEORGETOWN - Wagner. The Hoyas are not even up to this level.

VMI @ BUCKNELL - BUCKNELL. Even if not a potential contender, the Bufs are way better than the Keydets.

St. Francis (PA) @ FORDHAM - FORDHAM. It may indeed NOT be "no matter who they play" as someone said, but this game is a bad scrimmage and the Rams AD should be shot for scheduling it.

HOLY CROSS @ Albany - HOLY CROSS. Albany is CAA in name only. The Cross may not yet be ready for prime time, but they should be ready for this.

Sunday, August 31

COLGATE @ Ball State - Ball State. Some think that this is merely Chapter 1 of Roll Over and Play Dead in Hamilton. A total mismatch.

BYE: LAFAYETTE, LEHIGH - Both lose. One gets blown out.

SFPA is a return game on a home-and-home for Fordham. My understanding is that Fordham's trip to Loretto last season was, um, not exactly the same as West Point.

Albany has lots of RS players coming in this yr. Cross edge is playing them early and Pujols. Cross fans thinking a big win are a tad delusional IMO. Think Cross will win a close very tough game.

Here we go! A this point, I can't believe I will pick scores, but what the heck:
Saturday August 30

Wagner @ GEORGETOWN - Wagner just too much for Gtown, 34-10

VMI @ BUCKNELL - They pummeled us last year, but I'm still not sold on Bucknell. VMI, 26-14.

St. Francis (PA) @ FORDHAM - If Fordham's for real, not even close. Fordham, 42-12.

HOLY CROSS @ Albany - I want to pick HC, I really do...but I can't. Albany, 26-20.

Sunday, August 31

COLGATE @ Ball State - sorry Gate. BSU, 41-10.

What makes you think that?

I think this is pretty much a 50/50 game. I fear that Holy Cross' defense will be a work in progress in the early part of the season with a new DC in place. Although, I am confident the offense will be one of the tops in the Patriot League with many of the top receivers, running backs and, of course, Pujals returning.

Neither team will roll in this game.

As for the picks...

Wagner @ GEORGETOWN -- No reason behind this. Just think the Hoyas come out really fired up after reading nothing but disparaging comments and articles about them all throughout the offseason about how they have zero shot to be successful.

VMI @ BUCKNELL -- This won't be close.

St. Francis (PA) @ FORDHAM -- See above.

HOLY CROSS @ Albany -- A real toss-up in my mind. Similar to Georgetown, I think HC comes out with a chip on their shoulder.

COLGATE @ Ball State -- Ball State is a good MAC team. I'd like to see Colgate keep it close, but I fear it won't be.

Why does everyone think that Fordham blows out Saint Francis this year?

Last year, the Rams finished a very impressive 12-2 and put up 50+ points vs. 5 opponents (URI, Columbia, Lehigh, Yale, and Colgate). Yet, the Red Flash was up 20-17 at the end of 3Q last year before losing by 3 scores. And we know Sacred Heart gave the Rams a tough out in the first round of the playoffs.

I too predict the Rams will win, but I expect a solid performance from Saint Francis that makes Fordham earn the victory.

I think the Red Flashes lost a lot from last year....particularly their RB. I'm not saying the Rams are going to win by a "Mini-Ditka" like 77-6.... but at home, with what they have returning, I expect an easy FU W.

I think it's a great point and I respect the heck out of Sacred Heart this year. That said, I agree with sader with the combo of what we have back, what they lost and then that they're traveling out to us v the other way around.

Are there any St Francis previews you can share, ace? Haven't been able to find any. Thanks

It was a joke.

Congratulations on your ancestry, I'm directly descended from a guy who was given a land grant by William Penn, a guy who came across on the Mayflower as an indentured servant, folks who've fought in every major US war until the Persian Gulf, and some folks who got off the boat at the very end of the 19th century. All that doesn't mean jack about football.

Southerners, Northerners, Easterners, Westerners, Mexicans, Canadians, Jamaicans, Asians, Middle Easterners, Europeans, Africans, I try to be an equal opportunity comedian. Although, admittedly, I'm not always that funny. Look, part of my family tree branches to a guy who didn't like society and wandered off into the mountains back when there was no western civilization west of the blue ridge. That line reappears when he and his grandson walk back out of the woods 30 yrs later. If that's not the basis for a joke or two, I don't know what is.

After seeing the Rams last scrimmage last night, I have a few comments for the Patriot league crowd. Fordham should be much stronger in the defensive pit this year with players suited for the interior line. A couple of Keystone State freshmen running backs are looking great. The QB transfer from Marshall shows a great arm and very good leg speed.

Yes, think they win by 21+

All things are new for the first game of the season. 21+ might be just a bit optimistic but I have no doubt Fordham will cover this game.

Someone posted this before, but has anyone read/heard anything about St. Francis this season? They clobbered Sacred Heart last season - something Lafayette obviously could not do. The St. Francis roster shows an astonishing 40 "true" freshmen this year, including a 6'6"/302 lb OL.

Wagner wins easily
Bucknell wins easily
Holy Cross wins a close one (one score game no doubt in my opinion)
Ball State rolls Colgate.

Fordham wins, but it will be closer than the experts think. I still see a win between 14-20 points, but Fordham is far from 100% ready. OLine is still scary to me. If they win this one by 30+, I will be very very pleasantly surprised.

Oh and freshman RB Chase Edmonds is going to turn heads this year for the Rams. He is spectacular. They stole him from Delaware and Villanova. Kid is so damn good I don't know how he's at Fordham.

Full scholarship, excellent school, the allure of NYC, the ghost of Vince Lombardi and the 7 blocks and Joe Moorhead whispering sweet nothings into his ear. And so it begins...

Saturday August 30
Wagner at Georgetown Wagner Starting with a doozy. I hesitated here, as Wagner isn't exactly the team that won the NEC (and gave us a deserved defeat) in 2012, but then again Georgetown is of course well off from that as well. Offseason upheaval on the coaching staff rarely helps, but the Hoyas' problems run deep at a program level. This, however, is not the thread for that discussion. I must say though, at this point in the season, with so little to go with record-wise, past performance looms large.

VMI at Bucknell Bucknell Patriot League darkhorses. I was a doubter in the Susan revival, but the Bison's near win against Fordham, and the sound thumping they gave us, certainly give me reason to believe. Experience at QB is a big benefit, to go with a usually stout defense. Oh, and it's VMI. I would have taken some of the less-recent Bucknell teams against the Keydets. Perhaps returning to the SoCon will help in the long run (though it didn't the first time), but that is a conversation for the years, not days, ahead.

St. Francis (PA) at Fordham Fordham Credit to the Red Flash, as they have played a variety of big boys in recent seasons (and yes, the Rams count). I'm not going to read too much into last year's contest, though, as Loretto is a long haul by bus. They have to come to the Bronx this year, and the Rams are on a mission for that elusive Patriot League crown. Their window of out-talenting PL opposition will close soon enough (if it hasn't already).

Holy Cross at Albany Holy Cross This was actually kind of a tough one. Two teams that I suspect will be better than their marks a year ago, but by how much? The Danes were not good a year ago, even accounting for the conference upgrade. Year 1 after Bob Ford as well means a program in several kinds of transition. But then there are the Crusaders. Holy Cross, oh Holy Cross. Pujals looks pretty good, and should take a marked step forward join from Freshman to Sophomore year. This team also went 3-9, though Bucknell was one of those 3. Normally I would skew for the home team, but Albany isn't too far from Worcester, and there's no reason not to feel a little League pride in Week 1.

Colgate at Ball State Colgate I'm quietly optimistic about this team. Not League title optimistic, but I think, with health, we'll be much better than in 2013. In fact, I'll even predict we break into the League's top 4 (though over which of the predicted 4 I'm not sure). The transition from Biddle to Hunt has gone as smoothly as one could hope. Hunt is much more interested in publicity for the program, befitting a younger coach (and probably necessary without Biddle's resume), and I like his enthusiasm. Very little of this, I suspect, will have any bearing on what happens in Muncie. Even more than usual (which is most of the time), I have no idea what will happen. Looking forward to enjoying this on on ESPN...3

How is Wagner supposed to be this year? About the only team in Week 1 I have no real feel for this year.

3-8 last year with a win over Sacred Heart the highlight. Five of the losses were blowouts. Perhaps they have a few transfers from Hogwarts to help them suddenly morph into a juggernaut. But I doubt it.

Damn, I do believe this is the first time Pards and Blue Devils have met since the game Sept. 12, 1981 (Russo's first game as HC at Lafayette and Franks Novak's first game as a sophomore starter) a 51-0 win at Fisher Field in Easton, PA and great start to the Russo era there.

1980 was a bad year for your ever humble and contrite Pards - Neil Putnam's last, in fact. Maine and UNH crushed us and Lehigh shut us out (as did Colgate and Bucknell). We even lost to Columbia that year (though we beat Penn). Bill Russo came in the next year and turned things around considerably.

To his credit, though, Putnam was the last Pard HC to beat then-conference member Rutgers.

SHU should be a bear to deal with. Lots of returning player - the QB and RB are as good as anything in FCS. Both Payton/AA candidates. Legit chance to win the NEC and a first round playoff game. That should be a very tough game for the Leopards on the road.

RMU is an enigma. Had been losing steam under Joe, the new guy should shake things up. Without an answer at QB they could struggle. I expect Lafayette to win, if you are expected to have a good year.

Here's an article about RMU:

Well, we'll have a couple of scholarship players starting the season for the first time ever. Which is nice.

I just don't want a repeat of the wholesale second half failuring we witnessed at Robert Morris a couple of seasons ago. That game still occupies a pit in my stomach. Last years' opening loss to Sacred Heart I can handle - they were good. Robert Morris? Not so much.

Yep. CCSU was a founding member of D-II and played in that classification from its inception until the "Dayton rule" (1973-92).

As a D-II program, CCSU played a few I-AA teams (UConn, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern, Lafayette, and Villanova), but they only had 2 wins:

Nov. 10, 1979 - Central Conn. St. 35, Northeastern 21 (New Britain, Conn.)

Well, Bogie, you know about SHU:

- Defending NEC champ and picked to repeat.
- Returning 18 starters, including 2 preseason All-Americans

As for RMU:

- John Banaszak replaces a legend, Joe Walton, as head coach. Walton is the only coach RMU has ever had, but if truth be known Walton was a cardboard cutout the last few years, and Banaszak has been the coach for a while now. Banaszak is a Pittsburgh Steelers alumnus.
- 5-6 last year with no notable wins and a couple of blowout losses.
- Picked for third this year in the NEC behind SHU and Duquesne.
- They open with Eastern Kentucky at home and then go on the road for 3 (North Dakota [NOT State], Lafayette and Dayton). 1-3 thru this stretch seems to be the best they can hope for.
- They return 20 letter winners, including 10 starters - 5 on offense, 3 on defense, and 2 special teamers. The 5 returning offensive starters include only 1 skill position player, a WR.
- The Colonials will be hard pressed to match last year's 5-6 record.

We have 3 returning starters on the OL and a fourth who has seen quite a bit of playing time over the past 2 years (Stolte). Plus, I think we have one of the better OL coaches in the biz. I for one am not too worried about this unit.

Lafayette has suspended 3 players for "a violation of athletic department policy."

Junior PK Ryan Gralish is suspended for 4 games.

Senior WR Mike Duncan is suspended for 2 games.

Sophomore DB Ben Carroll is suspended for 2 games.

Gralish is a key to Lafayette success as he handles FGs, PATs and kickoff duties. Duncan is in the WR mix, but figured to be one of the first men out once the heralded freshmen begin to contribute. Carroll did not play in any 2013 games.

And you have been led in the right direction. That coach is now gone - and good riddance.

Athletic Department policy is very mysterious... it's no secret that Bruce tightened the reigns a year or two ago, some felt a little too stringently. What's no big deal to other students is a big deal in athletics.. "representing the Lafayette brand" as Bruce said at the time... my guess is they were busted for having beer in their room.

I'm surprised more wasn't done with Scott. There were certainly a lot of Colgate people who thought he should be expelled. From all reports, he apparently knocked on an unlocked door, went in and stole $20 or $40 and admitted to it when he was caught (not sure if the other player with him did). I did not know him but I always heard he was a good kid. I am not condoning it in the least. Maybe Biddle made a mistake by not suspending him more-- not knowing the facts, it always seemed like he did to me. But I 100% believe Biddle to be the type of man who would make decisions based on what he thought was right more than what he thought was right for his football team.

Probably true as to Scott but obvious that Gate protected its football team first and foremost. No matter how you rationalize it,the punishment was carefully steered away from football program.
None of this has any relevance today. Can we get back to this weeks games.

I'm all for that, RichH2. But I'm not the one who started it.

Moreover, I have no intention of allowing Colgate to be defecated upon without responding.

Save your defecating for the Brown Clowns. I have no love for Colgate (and I even go out of my way to buy Crest), but always save your venemon for the Saucon Swine.

Another coulda shoulda for Holy Cross. Albany wins on a 92 yard fumble return after Guild lost ball while losing his helmet. It appeared he was knocked out and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. Hopefully he's ok. HC could have iced the game a few minutes earlier when they missed a chip shot FG...

Neither team looked great, two very even teams coming off of bad years....

Wow! I thought it was a new season? Guess not for Holy Cross... didn't they have a few bizarre losses the past two years?

Save your venom for the Saucon Swine.

A manifold rebuke of those Sheet Stains of Silliness always is appropriate . . . no matter what the topic or by whom said chastisement is delivered.

Carry on, please. xcoolx
