3. Illinois State (6-1) vs. No. 10 Youngstown State (6-2)
Where: Hancock Stadium, Normal, IL.
When: 1:37 p.m.
Series: Tied at 7-7.
Notes: A Redbird victory today would give Illinois State its seventh straight win, equaling the longest winning streak in school history, set in 1932. ISU has posted four straight victories in games against ranked teams, but the 'Birds just haven't only won – they have won easily. ISU has won its last four match-ups against ranked foes by a margin of 45-20. The Penguins enter the game with the No. 5 scoring offense in all of I-AA football. YSU is averaging 34.50 points per game, which also ranks second in the conference behind Southern Illinois. Junior tailback Marcus Mason leads the Gateway in rushing and is No. 2 nationally with 153 yards per game. As a result, the Penguins own the No. 12-rated rushing offense in I-AA with 215.5 rushing yards per game.

Before any certain YSU people come on to the thread, I just wanted to say that that was a class post shakdaddy. Thanks. You have to be impressed with what ILS was able to do late as well. I am at work listening on the radio & NEVER felt comfortable the entire game ... except the last 52 seconds

YSU completely dominated us. Besides our punting, they had every checkmark by their name including about 10 by their coaching. They knew how to defend us and knew how to stuff the ball down our throats. Congrats YSU on this game, you wanted it more and it showed.

I hope some Redbird fans consider watching the replay of this game, it's on tape delay, to realize that Denver shouldn't be getting an extension offer until we're in the playoffs. :nono:

Ya class by ILSU Fans.. My rant goes to the YSU Heacock Haters and Doubters all week... they went off on him and if you saw my post on YSUPenguins.com on thursday, you saw my utter disgust of it.

This team came to play, and still won with 2 crucial turnovers.

Stats: From YSUSports.com (http://ysusports.com/football/2006/stats/game9.htm)

This says it all:

PASSING YDS (NET)............. 93 143

TOTAL OFFENSE PLAYS-YARDS..... 72-438 54-161

Mason is the best still!
176 yards today on 34 carries.. We've faced the 2 best rushing defense the last 2 weeks and he has ran all over them.

Kudos to the Penguins! Missed the game today, but I'm not suprised YSU got the victory. Sounds like the Penguins came to play and wanted this game. Think YSU has really helped themselves playoff-wise.

As for the Birds, it's no disgrace losing to a very tough top 10 YSU team.
ISU could have taken control of the Gateway today, but the Guins defense came up big. Still think ISU is looking good to go at the very least 8-3. The last game of the Gateway pits ISU vs. UNI in Cedar Falls, so a Bird win there would be HUGE for them to go 9-2.

And, of course, the ultra-competitive Gateway continues to be crazy!!!! Once again, congrats to the YSU Penguins on a BIG and important road victory.

The 2 best rushing defenses in what? the Gateway?
I feel certain if Mason ran against the UMasshole defense he would be stopped!

Well if you think so, then maybe we will see this matchup in the playoffs, that is if we can finish 2-0 here...... And go 9-2 and hell: maybe a home playoff spot????

Still, YSU is averaging 228 yards per game on the ground; while we had 345 today vs. the #3 team in the nation.

Gateway is #1!

I said head: 28-24 ILSU
Heart: 31-28 YSU

LOL Sure I felt we were a big underdog going into Normal, but I felt that if we played an error free game, which we did not actually, we'd win....

That is to the YSU Fans who went off on Heacock and went onto say we had no chance, and there were many..

But Hey GoGuins.... I agree Heacock looking back never had a real big win, a lotta nice wins, but not the big one.

You can't get much bigger than this!

Did Tressel ever go on the road and beat a Top 3 team on the road???? Maybe in the playoffs ever???

Well thanks for beating the number 3 team for us and letting us move up in the polls. If the season ended right now... if YSU and UMass met it would be in Amherst. As for the Gateway being number 1... if thats the case why arent they number 1 in the GPI? or even close to being number 1 in the GPI?

Iwas being SarcASStic if I were serious I wouldn't have referred to them as UMassholes. We beat them in the playoffs years ago and we could do it again -would love to get the chance.

Not to get off topic, but didn't their coach direct some smack at Tressel and our program before?

If so; its been transferred to their fans... Our offense has yet to be stopped by any I-AA School; including 4 ranked I-AA teams.. What makes UMASS think they are invincible to MARCUS MASON.

Who I think is the best Running Back in the nation after this game, even if he is not statistically!

YSU needs to come home and win big over SIU; and when I say big; I mean really big.. They will be top 20 coming into Youngstown.

When was the last time we saw 4 of the 6 home games vs. Ranked Teams?

With Richmond, EIU, Maine, UC-Davis, and Princeton all losing today, SIU should be a top 15 team next week.
