SLC's UT-Arlington: Campus group aims to bring back UTA’s team

More and more talk in Arlington about getting football back on the field. I'm not sure what kind of difference this will make in the process, but an effort by an active group within the student body does help the overall effort and at the very least, once more brings attention to this issue.

Campus group aims to bring back UTA’s team

Students tossing a football back and forth around campus is a familiar sight.

But there’s something missing. It might be a screaming crowd, a packed stadium or the football team itself.

History senior Sam DeBerry has a plan to change that picture. As president of Mavericks for Football Now, he hopes to ignite interest across campus to show administrators that students need a football team. The group is awaiting approval from the Student Governance and Organizations Office, but it has already set up shop online on MySpace and Facebook.

“I believe I have the focus and direction for proper leadership to guide this group,” he said. “Once I set my mind to something, I’m not going to stop. I want to see a football program at the university before I graduate, even as an alumni.”

Not exactly a thing of beauty, but it sure would do. Any idea how their attendance, support, etc... were when they had football? Looks like they were a middle of the pack Southland team record-wise.

BTW, I assume their athletics are still DI?

Maverick Stadium

In the 1950s and '60s, Arlington State College's football teams played in a cozy on-campus stadium. After that, the team played at Arlington Stadium for a bit before moving over to Lamar High School's Cravens Field.

In 1980, UTA opened Maverick Stadium, a 13,000-seat venue located just off the west side of the campus. The light standards were set well back of the stands on both sides so UTA could expand to 30,000 seats between the goal lines without adding a second deck. On Sept. 6, 1980, North Texas State ripped the Mavericks 31-14 in UTA's first game at Maverick Stadium, in front of an overflow crowd of 15,000.

However, expansion wasn't needed and the football program was disbanded after the 1985 season. Since then, Maverick Stadium has hosted high school football games, high school soccer games, band competitions and many other events, including college and high school track meets.

Of course, two of these programs (UTSA and Lamar) have fan bases that think they'd hop to the BS division not too long after getting football back...

Hopefully they get some traction here. The students already voted to bring it back last year with an increase in student fees. The UTA president decided to use the funds elsewhere unfortunately.

Jesus. That' looks FRIGHTENINGLY like Old Dornblazer Stadium in Missoula. Orange track and all..... :eek: :eek: :eek:
