View Full Version : NDSU getting sports bubble indoor practice facility

NDSU is getting a sports bubble that will be placed over Dacotah Field at the end of the soccer season that will be used for football when the Fargodome is not available. It should be ready to go after the soccer season this year. Colorado, Eastern Michigan, the Tennessee Titans have one like it now. Instead of separate building as an IPF facility for football like other schools are doing, it willl be part of a sports complex that includes the recently completed indoor track building, the Bison Sports Arena renovation which will include a new weight room, training center, basketball arena, basketball locker rooms, basketball practice courts, Hall Of Fame, player lounge/study center, and ticket office. The Fargodome houses the coaching offices, football locker rooms, team meeting rooms, and some medical stuff. 2 years ago the Fargodome received new turf but there were some issues with the installation so they had to remove it and replace it. NDSU quickly purchased the new turf which was used for 1 game and placed it where the grass practice fields sit. This isn't the permanent solution some fans are looking for but with the Fargodome available most of the time, practice space will be easy to come by. Also with the renovation of the Bison Sports Arena which will take nearly 2 years, it gives another place to practice while it's being built and it can still be used even if we build a permanent IPF building for football

"It will have all the mechanical and electrical amenities of heat and power. At 75 feet high, the air-supported structure will be big enough for a punter to kick a football or a baseball or softball player to take fly balls.“Every sport will benefit,” Taylor said.
In football, for example, that means players doing 7-on-7 passing drills in the winter will no longer have to use the Bison Sports Arena. They wouldn’t be able to do it anyway next winter because of the BSA renovation. Moreover, it would maintain NDSU’s place in the college football facility arms race.
“It will help us a bunch in recruiting as far as being able to show a kid when he comes to campus in December and January that this is what we use when we’re indoors,” said NDSU head coach Chris Klieman. “Every school has it now.”
It will solve spring football issues when the weather is not cooperating and the Fargodome is booked."

Will they use it during baseball/softball season? That would really cut down the number of cancelled games.

It's for practice so I doubt it. College baseball and weather is a bad mix for the midwest. The seasons almost over and it's just now getting warm.

Plus it sucks playing the first 20 games on the road. I would rather see baseball dropped for something like lacrosse or take the money and used for the other sports. If you want baseball there is the Redhawks. Or else UND/NDSU will never be a big deal.

Heh, do you know the history of Mr. Bubble? It was founded by this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Schafer

Wish they'd dome the whole campus. Edit: From November 1 to May 1.

So maybe it's just me but I'd think 75' is still going to be a pretty low ceiling for punters and fly balls. To equate it to baseball that's not even the full distance from home to 1st base.

It's still much better than what they have now though.

This is based on NFL punters...which I don't know how many NDSU (or the FCS) really produce...but

http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=325024

Using the formula y= (0.5)(32.2 ft/s sq)(time squared). I calculate the average height based on average hang time is 85.2 feet. A hang time of 4.73 seconds and above translates to 90 feet and higher height.

The board in Cowboys Stadium has been hit, and that's at 90 feet. Though that was by an NFL punter trying to hit it. I'm not sure it's a huge issue for the average punter NDSU is going to bring in

We've had enough punters put them into the rafters in the Fargodome...Hitting this will be cake.

Also, this isn't going to be put over the old turf from the Fargodome that was only used for one game, Dacotah field has different turf that they will be using.

Do any other FCS teams have bubbles, similar to this?

No idea.

The University of Iowa uses one nearly identical until BTN money kicked in to get them a nice new facility...a 55 million dollar project

Iowa State also used one nearly identical until the money from the new "Please don't leave the B12" deal came in. The new facility costs over 20 million dollars

So when is NDSU going to get the "Please don't leave the MVFC money"? :D xrotatehx

Right about the time when someone figures out how to monetize internet video streaming to substantial profitability.

Ha!

I think that was known as the "Texas changes it mind - it doesn't want to join the PAC anymore because it just realized it could have its own cable TV network" deal.

NDSU can play softball in the dome, this facility would be too small though.

Last year we led the nation in net punting yards.

Mike Dragosovich played at NDSU through 2007 and bounced around the NFL for a few years.

Gus Bradley, the current Jacksonville Jags head coach was a punter at NDSU.

In the 2 million range, if I remember correctly(this includes infra). The dome is 300k.

I did a search for information and found out that the consultants estimate was 1.905 million.

I can't figure out how to provide a link to the PDF.

That's really nice. Plus it has enough seating for you guys to host a bad weather playoff game. Too bad the field is just a few yards short.*

My thoughts exactly. We have a separate track facility that can host while softball and baseball or soccer practice.

Those are nice buildings. Do your schools rent them out for storage space? We might need some room for more of these. :D

Is there a reason why the bubble has no clear pieces to allow in natural light/act as windows?

To me, a bubble is just fine. All it does is remove some ****ty elements that arise during late playoff runs (terrible problem to have). You don't need to worry about that playing in the Fargodome for every playoff game and Frisco for the Natty.

I'd rather our money go to the new basketball arena (the only facility lacking as of right now). IPF's are fancy but as Youngstown has proven, not a key to success.

If you are buying a 2million dollar bubble to practice in and your first thought is "what if the punter hits the top", maybe football isn't the best sport for you to support.

just send the kickers outside. They spend most of practice sitting around anyway.

Of course you would! What did it take, ten years to raise enough money for your basketball renovation?!
