NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee State coach James Webster took his complaints about Ohio Valley Conference officiating to the media Tuesday.

“I feel the officials are making calls for everything we do and they aren’t calling things being done to my players,” Webster said at the OVC’s weekly coaches teleconference. “My main concern is for the health of my players.”

While his Tigers are 2-0, a half-game behind Eastern Illinois in the OVC standings, Webster’s team also is the most penalized league team averaging 74.8 penalty yards per game, more than six yards more than the next flagged team.

Tennessee State opponents have been penalized 42.0 yards per game with only Eastern Illinois having less at 34.1 per game.

And then gets reprimanded...

TSU's Webster reprimanded for officiating comments

(Tennessee State football coach James Webster received a public reprimand today from Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher for derogatory comments he made in The Tennessean about game officials.

Webster said he believed his players have been put in harm’s way because OVC officials have overlooked many of the penalties being committed by the Tigers’ opponents.

Steinbrecher, who said on Tuesday that Webster’s allegations were being investigated, said today that Webster violated the protocol set by the OVC by speaking to The Tennessean about officiating.

“The OVC has procedures in place for coaches to address concerns with officiating,” Steinbrecher said. “In this case, those procedures were not followed.”
