Full practice schedule hasn't been released but practice starts March 28th. Snow has been removed from Memorial Stadium, so things are all set. Let Bubba ball begin.

ha. I get it. We had snow on the ground Tuesday but nothing like what you got. Indoor practice facilities rule! Glad we have one. But I guess that will make the players soft. LOL j/k it helps when it's 60 one day and 17 the next for sure.

Saw several players running the streets of Conway before official spring practice started. I like that preseason drive in them I guess they took upon themselves to do. Let's hope we don't lose 30 players to various injuries this year. Last year had so much promise... Gotta stay healthy!

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin head football coach Clint Conque (http://sfajacks.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/clint_conque_879966.html) has announced the 2014 spring workout schedule for the Lumberjack football team. SFA's spring practices get underway on Friday, March 21st, leading up to the 2014 Spring Game on Saturday, April 12th.

"These three weeks will be very important as we begin to fully implement our system, discipline and fundamentals," Conque said. "We have been very pleased with our players taking ownership and the investment they've shown. Now it is time for the rubber to meet the road as we begin the competitive aspect and begin to build this program heading into the fall."
The 15-date practice schedule will be a combination of full pads, helmets and shells with a pair of scrimmages on the docket as well. All practices are open to the public with dates and times subject to change based on weather conditions or coaches decisions.

"Our practices will be very physical, giving each player an opportunity to earn their spot," Conque said. "Every position is open as we have a lot of young men that are eager to prove themselves. We have a lot of work to do, and this is the first critical step in building a winning program."

The spring workout schedule culminates with the 2014 Spring Game, being played under the lights on Saturday, April 12th. The game gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at Homer Bryce Stadium, giving Lumberjack fans an early look at what to expect when SFA kicks off the 2014 season on August 30th against Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan.

In Furman's case, I think they had a bunch of players slated for offseason surgery. I believe the rule is 15 practices over 30 days. I guess it is up to each staff to determine how they want to do it.

Sigh.....Another Brandon Jacobs. :(

Doc

Transfers (in my view) fall into one of two categories. One, overhyped players that didn't pan out at a big school and got pushed out of playing time (i.e., not as good as the other guy). Two, program changing players that, for one reason or another, are looking for a fresh start somewhere else.

Hard to know where Eubanks fits yet. The number of true "impact" transfers in the FCS are few and far between. There aren't that many Ingle Martins or Joe Flaccos that take a good team to great team overnight. I do think he potentially meets the "playmaker" on offense category, which Samford sorely needs after most of their impact players graduated.

Of course, you guys don't have to worry about us this season.

Update on the Paladins. Must be nice for the coaching staff to finally have the depth and experience to start trying to find guys that can fit roles, instead of having to install brand new systems with new personnel.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The time has finally come for first-year head coach Bubba Schweigert (http://www.anygivensaturday.com/ViewArticle.dbml?&ATCLID=209349966&DB_OEM_ID=13500) to put the whistle around his neck and see how the 68 young men that make up his North Dakota spring football roster can perform on the gridiron. “I’m excited. We’ve gone through winter workouts and it’s time for us to get out on the field and do football stuff,” Schweigert said.
That opportunity for Schweigert and his nine-man staff begins on Friday with the opening of 15 spring practices. Not surprisingly, the emphasis of those sessions will be placed on player evaluation and system implementation.

With 32 healthy players on both offense and defense entering spring ball, Schweigert wants his squad to start developing an identity right away. “We are going to have different philosophies on offense and defense then the previous staff and what we will try to do over the next month is fit the current guys we have into those systems.”

Southeastern Louisiana Spring Practice Update

http://lionsports.net/news/2014/3/28/FB_0328142901.aspx

"The one thing that has stood out on defense is the incredible speed we have in the secondary," Roberts said. "We've added some talented newcomers to help in that area, but our returners all seem to be a step quicker which is very encouraging. We have a big, physical defensive line and a deep line backing corps. We're very pleased with where we're at on that side of the ball."

McNeese's first spring scrimmage (http://www.mcneesesports.com/news/2014/3/29/FB_0329145113.aspx)

Looks like the defense can't stop the run nor the pass. ;)

From a fan...

Scrimmage was full contact today. Quarterback play was a little rough, but Zach Conque and Joe Minden got the vast majority of the snaps and alternated drives most of the session. If today was an indication, it looks like a two horse race to start. Today, I think Joe got the better of the two and actually found little bit of a rhythm at one point. Zach led a touchdown drive only once on a busted coverage and he missed a number of wide open throws down the field. Neither were particularly spectacular today though - defense owned the afternoon.

He's a Runningback for the team. Please... no more injuries this season...we had a UNI-type year last year (something like 10 season ending and 20 multiple game missed injuries )...not again! xblehx

Lions getting physical during scrimmage No. 2

http://www.hammondstar.com/sports/article_c22fb0e8-bd40-11e3-9012-001a4bcf887a.html

“My first impression was that it was pretty clean and it was pretty physical,” Southeastern head coach Ron Roberts said. “I thought there were a lot of bright spots on both sides of the ball. Guys were getting after it on the O-line and the D-line. I kind of called it off a little bit and started throwing the ball a little more at the end because it was getting a little physical out there.”

---

Bennett said he liked what he saw from the team in general and the offense specifically.

“I saw some of the younger guys step up and make some plays and some older guys made some big-time catches,” Bennett said. “Devonte Scott had a great day. It’s always good to see some guys make some plays. There’s always things to learn from but I think as a full-team effort, offensively and defensively, I was happy with the way we worked today.”

Bennett said the play of guys like Scott shows the amount of depth the Lions have going into the 2014 season.

“I think we have that across the board at almost every position, if not every position, where there are guys getting pushed and there are guys still having to work for jobs,” Bennett said. “Just seeing other people make plays makes you want to make some plays. I think there is a good competition level throughout our entire team and we compete well with each other and we push each other and we drive each other.”

Player of Year Bennett Keeps Getting Better (http://www.hammondstar.com/sports/article_3729d4ec-bf84-11e3-a996-001a4bcf887a.html)

“The biggest thing right now is he is a lot more comfortable,” Southeastern head coach Ron Roberts said following the Lions’ scrimmage in Strawberry Stadium on Saturday. “He’s got a lot more command of the offense, he’s more comfortable out there, he’s throwing the ball really well and has gotten better with his reads.

“He’s been able to go to his second, third reads and doing all those things you want out of a championship-level quarterback.”

- - - -

“I think I’ve just been able to develop as a quarterback, as a game manager,” Bennett said. “I’m continuing to learn more and more about the game and the offense is obviously coming a little bit easier now that you’ve been doing it for a while ...

“I think we have a group of guys who are hungry to go further,” Bennett said. “We did what we did last year, but nobody was ecstatic about that. Obviously we are happy with our success, but we felt like there were two more games we needed to play.

“We didn’t get the opportunity to do that, so now I think every year we come in we’re going to have a goal to try to win the conference and then go in and try to compete for the national championship and win the national championship. I think we have a lot of good players on this team that are all hungry to continue to get better. I’m excited to see how much we can fine-tune this vehicle.”

We had our spring game today. Our offense looked pretty similar to what we did under Conque, though with some different formations. We ran the ball more...looked a little like Auburn last season.

Our wide receivers are deep and we're gonna be good there. The defensive line looked good and we didn't give up too many big pass plays. Hard to tell when it's 1s vs. 2s though...purple team won 48-6

We had our spring game this afternoon ... extremely impressive across the board ... big, fast, and physical on both sides of the ball, and that's with holding out several projected starters with bumps and bruises.

kid can REALLY spin it. it's DIFFERENT though when it's YOUR team. he's definitely a question mark on a team that hasn't had many lately......

No question. NDSU had a VERY hard transition from Steve Walker to what was eventually Brock Jensen. The whole Nick Mertens/Jose Mohler debacle was really bad but right now I feel really good about the kid. A lot of key offensive positions are back this year so it might be a softer landing for him.

Wentz is a better athlete...the question will be his football IQ/"gray matter" and if he has ice in his veins like Brock.

Bubba getting UND's defense back to the basics on defense!!

http://siouxfb.areavoices.com/

It has become quite apparent that the UND coaching staff is going to treat Spring Ball 2014 as a “back to the basics” type of session. While they are obviously installing the offense and defense, they are also taking a good chunk of every practice to work on such things as tackling, blocking, pursuit, stance, alignment and so on. We have seen the following drills being implemented thus far (these are very common drills but noteworthy):

Form Tackling: one player tackles another onto a big padded mat that the track team uses.
One-on-One Tackling: RB vs. LB’s and DB’s vs. WR’s. Lined up across from each other the offensive player breaks one way and the defensive player needs to react up and tackle offensive player in space. The defense has had trouble with this in spring drills but seems to be improving. This type of open field tackle was a major problem the last two seasons. Also benefits the offensive player in that they work on their moves/shakes in open space. Reading weight of defensive player and so forth.
Pursuit: an offensive player runs down the hash and the defense, from their respective positions, has to hustle over and take the right angle to catch up to the offensive player. This type of drill teaches the defensive player to instinctively hustle after the ball no matter where they are. Becomes second nature.
Stance work: Coach Schweigert and Coach Rodgers have been working with the DB’s on their stance and read steps to get them to play the way they want. Nothing like starting from scratch.

These are just a few of the drills we have seen that will greatly benefit this team as they head into 2014. We will have some thoughts on the offensive side of the ball coming up in the next day or so. However, it is has been very hard to sort out who is playing well and who is making an impact, etc. because of the emphasis on the basics. Hopefully, by the spring game some players will be begin to step up and take over some #1 spots.

Time to undo Muss's mess and actually have a defense on the field.

I agree Carson will have to prove it on the field no different than anyone else. I like the kid and from what everyones been saying about him he's got the tools. But physical tools is only half of the battle. It's what's between the ears that makes all the difference. Looking forward to seeing him be able to prove he's got what it takes to keep us at the top. One thing is for sure this years edition of the Bison just like the last two years will have that target on their back.

Yotes are looking good in Spring practice (but who doesn't?) By all accounts we're looking to be quite a bit better at about every position, aside from the secondary.

Kevin Earl looks to be taking a big step forward at QB, really benefiting from taking all the reps. RB is just stacked returning three guys who could be the starter, plus a highly touted freshman. Receiving corp is looking far more athletic than last year, adding a freshman and JC transfer to an already deep position. We'll miss Wilhelm at TE, but Barkley will do a serviceable job at TE. On the OL we have three starters returning and a big Sophomore who saw time last year, but our center and backups could be questionable.

On the DL Drew Iddings is going to be a menace this year. Started all 12 games as a sophomore, and is running wild in spring practice. We lost one senior on the DL, but return a lot of talent. LB, without Tyler Starr, still looks to be as good or better than last year, Keyen Lage and Auston Johnson are going to be huge at LB this season. The secondary is the big question on the team, having lost all 4 starters. We have a JC transfer who will join in the fall that I imagine will be a starter, but beyond that I have no clue who will be starting. That bunch is going to have to figure things out quickly, or else we'll be in some deep trouble.

I'm really happy to hear this, because I was getting all worried that our stellar defense was having a slip. Talking with some of my buddies on the football team, I'm cautiously optimistic about this year.

VMI's Spring is done.......one of the candidates for starting QB missed the final 10 days (high ankle sprain), but Coaches are all pleased with the sessions.
