Saw this Citadel article claiming they were the national college football champions in 1871 because they were undefeated and unscored on. The Citadel was awarded the 1871 national championship by the TSA Matrix Ratings System according to the article.

What teams were played, when, where, what was The Citadel's score. Since not scored on we should be able to figure out the other teams scores.

In 1906 you played 3 games and were evidently not scored on also. Did you win the national championship that year also.
If not why not. Did someone play 4 games?
Truthfully Yale and Princeton were undefeated, but tied each other, and each gave up points to another team.
Looks like The Citadel should have been national champs in 1906 also. That was the first year of the pass by the way.

Maybe that was an "Onion" type piece. Other words a bunch of junk maybe. Seems may have been.
college football data warehouse only goes back to 1905 with The Citadel and claims it was their first year of football,
but there were many games before then.
Wiki claims 1869 until 1905 was an unregulated period of college football.
1906 was first year passes were legal, so guess that's when regulation started, with the pass.

The Citadel wasn't even in business in 1871, having been closed by the U.S. Army when it imposed military rule on Charleston six years earlier.

The 1938 Duke team did not allow a point all season until they reached the Rose Bowl and lost 7-3 to USC.

You should read the blog post more carefully. Spike was basically responding to the recent move by one of the Ivies to go back and claim national championships based on records and pints scored, etc. he applied the same logic to The Citadel's team records, that's all. It is just passing the offseason is all.

1970 Dartmouth wasn't too far off the mark. They went 9-0 with 6 shutouts. They most they gave up in a game was 14. No bowl invite (although that had more to do with Ivy policy than lack of respect).

scored a whopping 72 points in the first quarter against rival team Plainville, and went
on to an 86-0 victory Tuesday night. The Redmen’s 72 points is believed to be the
record for most points scored by a high school team in a single quarter, according to
the Salinas Kansas Journal. The defending state champion, Smith Center has rolled
to a 9-0 record so far this season, all shutouts. They have outscored opponents 640-0,
with an earlier 69-0 win over the same Plainville team they played Tuesday night,
according to The Associated Press. “It happened so quickly. It wasn’t really something
we were thinking about whatsoever,” Smith Center Principal Greg Koelsch told ABC
News. Though most media coverage has painted the 12-minute, 72-point grab as a
trouncing or triumph, the tenor of the Redmen’s response is anything but celebratory.
“Our coaches do a good job of keeping things humble, keeping the boys humble,” said
Koelsch. “At no point do we wish to run up the score on anyone. We’re not looking at
this like, ‘We stuck it to them.’”

I think what's funniest about this schedule is that Colgate had six home games. Including Penn State at Hamilton! xlolx

Penn State was horrible that year, going 2-5 with one of those wins coming against SoCon doormat Sewanee. In Sewanee's last year in the SoCon! xlolx

The "schedule strength" wasn't the best for the Maroons in this year, but they did have some genuine quality wins against Syracuse, Brown, and NYU. Brown was 7-1 and their only loss came to Colgate, legit title contenders. Lafayette was only 3-5 but they were still considered a strong Eastern team when Colgate beat them, a season removed from a 7-2 record.

There was only one bowl game in existence in 1932--the Rose Bowl. For whatever reason, an 8-0-2 Pitt team was invited from the East that year to get spanked by USC.

Had Colgate waited a few years, they might have gotten an invite to the Orange Bowl (established 1935). Indeed, Bucknell won the inaugural Orange Bowl game.

Citdog - not trying to be a wise -ass...but is the stone used for the old Citadel some sort of pink-hued marble? If so, do you know if it was from a local quarry? It has a pretty distinct look from that picture...wondering if there is an interesting story behind it!

Yes... in 1783, the British did not bring their A-game and disrespected the Americans. As a result, they were upset. War of 1812 outcome somewhat debatable. Britain was #1 until probably 1918.
