At least this schedule will give the Cats a chance to win a few games and gain a little momentum and confidence and they won't get physically beat down until the final game. Whatever you do please win the first 2 home games at the very least.

I'm predicting 5-6 wins for this schedule. Quite ugly.

Two Non DI's is a little embarrassing...but it is understandable...WCU needs to have winnable home games to help build it's confidence (thus keeping the home fans happy) and hopefully take the next step.

And the good news is...Mercer will undoubtedly have more Non DI's on their schedule, so WCU won't have the worst schedule. :)

Two Non DI's is a little embarrassing...

Why would 2 non-DI's be a "little embarrassing" for you? If Spear's not embarrassed, it should be a non-embarrassing issue for you.

It is embarrassing for the same reason it is bad to have multiple Non DI's on a basketball schedule...it's weak. And quite frankly, I can make an issue of anything I want, you don't get to decide for me...WCU's OOC schedule affects the SOS of everyone else in the conference.

I am just as embarrassed any time the Mocs have a Non DI on schedule. I know Huesman doesn't want to play Non DI's, and I am sure it is not optimal for Speir either.

But, like I said, it is understandable for a program that is trying to win after a lot of tough years...and you want to try and get as many home games as possible. Thanks for nitpicking on part of the my opinion instead of the whole.

BTW, I find it ironic that I know how to correctly spell the name of your head coach.

I don't know what WCU is getting paid, but Chattanooga played them this past season for $450K and will get $500K in 2016...so it at least gives you a frame of reference.

Spelling and football and few other things are not in WCU's wheelhouse.

...WCU's OOC schedule affects the SOS of everyone else in the conference..

Yes, WCU's schedule does affect everyone else in the conference, just like UTC's does. However, just like in basketball, non-DIs on the schedule do not count in your SOS, only D-I games are figured in SOS. So those games affect no one's SOS, it's just an embarrassment to folks like you.

I think that probably South Florida and Alabama on the WCU schedule trump any down side from 2 non-DIs that the non-DIs would have on SOS, regardless.

BTW, You get one point for knowing how to correctly spelling Mark Speir's name, even though you didn't prove you did.

Handicapping WCU's schedule:

Aug 30 - at South Florida LOSS
Sept. 6 - vs. Brevard WIN
Sept. 13 - vs. Catawba WIN
Sept. 27 - at Furman LOSS
Oct. 4 - at Presbyterian WIN
Oct. 11 - vs. Wofford * LOSS (possible toss-up)
Oct. 18 - at Mercer * WIN

Nov. 1 - vs. Chattanooga * LOSS
Nov. 8 - at Samford * LOSS
Nov. 15 - vs. VMI * WIN

Just my 2 cents, but I think most of the SoCon is pulling for Western's success. Not to the point of beating our own team of interest, of course, but to being competitive and picking up some Ws. If this schedule will help with some confidence, then it is better for the league than the schedule strength issue. I think that WCU now has a very good coach. I've always enjoyed my trips to Cullowhee - good folks who deserved better than what they have had to put up with, and IMO, their drought is about to end.

Just win Catamounts! Don't worry about playing D-2's or even NAIA, just win. Your fans deserve it
and your football program needs it badly. What is this Speir's 3d year....bet you will have a lot of fun
and some wins this year.

Yes, this is Speir's third year. What has been so great about 2014 recruiting is that a lot of professors came to the school to speak with the recruits as well focusing on the academic side while the coaches, of course, sold the athletic side of the school. Speir quoted some of the parents in saying that this "hadn't happened at some of the other schools we visited".

Kudos to the people in the Robinson Bldg. at WCU. I think FINALLY some people are getting it. GO CATS!

Thanks. I remember people complaining about Samford coming into the SoCon but you guys HAVE MORE THAN HELD YOUR OWN as it comes to good football. Heck, you've whipped us every year and other than 2012, it hasn't been close. Here's hoping we finally get a win against you guys come November 8. Good luck until then! GO CATS!

I am personally worried about Western Carolina. WCU handed Furman one of its most surprising losses in 2005.

Furman has three road games and a date with a tough South Carolina State team before WCU. The Cats get two non-D1s and a bye week before Furman. WCU can probably spend the better part of a month preparing for the Paladins.

I do believe this will be a more competitive football team this season. I hope we fare well in Greenville on Sept 27, 2014. Go Cats!

not to. Just who they are.

For all those talking crap about the two non-DIs on WCU's schedule, what you got to say about Samford's just released schedule? At least we needed to schedule possible wins, what's Samford's excuse? and only 11 games, what's up? xrotatehx

With only 7 FCS games, a sure loss to Auburn, Sammy would most likely have to win the auto-bid, or beat TCU, to make the playoffs. Especially since "replacing" ASU and GSU with Mercer and VMI will significantly reduce the SoCon's strength of schedule in the near term.

Sammy does have scheduling issues related to geography. They are not near any Big South schools, so adding GWU, PC, CSU or CCU might be difficult, but they should be able to pick up an OVC game.

11 games I can understand. Mike Ayers refuses to schedule 12 game seasons feeling that 12 games followed immediately by playoffs is too much, but at least we play only one BCS and only one sub-D1.

Since ETSU won't start conference play until 2016, a lot of SoCon schools will also have scheduling issues in 2015.

I understand Ayer's point, but Wofford (IMO) is not as good now as they were a couple of years ago. Wofford may well need that 12th game to make the playoffs.

They don't have geographical scheduling issues ... they were "scheduled" to play us in Hammond (5 hours away) as the return game in a home-n-home series, but decided to buy the game out. It left us scrambling to fill a date (which we ultimately did with Southern Utah) and left them with two non D-Is on their schedule.
