Portland State president Wim Wiewel has directed that the PSU football team become self-sufficient by the 2014-15 academic year.
PSU spokesman Mike Lund said the move is one of a series of cuts the university is making to deal with a $15 million financial shortfall (http://www.pdx.edu/fadm/2014-15-budget-frequently-asked-questions).
Lund said the football program received approximately $800,000 from the university’s general fund in 2013-14. The football budget is $3.85 million.
“We already had scheduled two money games next season,” Lund said, referring to nonconference road games against teams in a higher classification for which the Vikings get a large financial guarantee. “Right now we’re projecting $3.6 million in revenue.”

I can see if a University has a moderately successful program that the exposure the school gets from that is worth the investment in athletics however how many schools never or rarely sniff any playoffs to gain that exposure? Is it low expectations and no pressure on coaching staffs that allows them to remain less than competitive? If you aren't competitive folks (or most fans anyway) are not going to be interested in supporting a University where they don't expect better. Yeah its easy to say and of course everyone wants to win but you have to be supportive (Not just financially either) to get that. Tradition isn't built overnight either. I hope this doesn't spell disaster for athletics at PSU. PSU has not been a doormat like some programs so to see this happen to them is not good. Yeah I get the money part but what happens when and if the FBS money games don't exist?
