Sent an e-mail to a bigwig at the GFC some time ago and asked if they were going to do another "All-Decade" Team like they did for the first ten years. Said they're going to do a "Silver Anniversary Team" in 2010.

Interesting.

Thoughts on who belongs from the last 20+ years?

Bryce Paup - UNI
Boomer Grigsby - ILSU

come to mind immediately. Who else?

Warner played at UNI in the early 90's. I think like 91' or 92'. Not sure but I know it was definitly not the late 90's. I think maybe he played a year or two with Kenny Shedd.

You're right - he didn't hit the NFL until late 90's. I believe his senior year was '93

Plus Warner only played one season, sitting behing Jay Johnson the other years, I believe.
Forgot about Tim Mosley and his funky left footed punts, boy those had to be scary for the returners.

Warner doesn't belong on the team. Only played one season at UNI. Brad Meester, Mike Furrey, Eddie Berlin,Benny Sapp to name a few Panthers for consideration that were after the initial 10 year team. Heck, even Ryan Helming with the numbers he put up should garner consideration. Although, when that team comes out in 2010, something tells me Eric Sanders might replace Helming as the UNI QB...xsmileyclapx

It is tough to not put the most decorated player to ever come out of the Gateway Conference on the all time list.

Only Gateway player ever to be on a Wheaties Box (important one)
Only Gateway player to ever win an NFL MVP
Only Gateway player to ever MVP a super bowl
Only Gateway QB ever to win a super bowl

Its what you do in the Gateway not once you leave. Warner is behind several other players who did a heck of lot better in college than him.

How are we forgeting D. Frost from UNI, punter for the Redskins. He's gotta make that list. He's been in the NFL for what, 3-4 years?

Brown was the big RB at YSU. Very fast also for a man that size :)

IAN Dominelli LB YSU. I think he sill holds the GFC record for most tackles in a single season ?

I agree.

I would put Mike Smith, Jay Johnson, Ryan Helming, and Eric Sanders ahead of Warner.

Yeah, I still remember that long TD run at the dome by Brown in 1999 that pretty much ended our year. That guy had some serious wheels. He even ran all over GSU in the title game.

I also agree with Dominelli.

Shame GSU had a guy just a little faster and stronger named Peterson :)

If you're talking about recent Gateway greats, OL Buster Ashley from WKU has to be in any and all arguments.

WKU LB Charles Thompson as well.

I might have missed his name on one of the lists but what about Mike Scifres, the WIU punter.

First post here at anygivensaturday. Have lurked for a while and finally registered.

Have a few Redbirds for the list from their time in the Gateway...

LB Galen Scott...Gateway #2 in tackles behind Boomer Grigsby (pretty much LB is a category the Birds will dominate).
DL Brent Hawkins...Defensive POY, Buck runner-up last year, playing for the Jags.

I agree with Scrifes, he was a great punter.

I would agree though with putting those on the team that have had the most success in the Gateway, not focusins as much on pro success.

It seems to me that PK Craig Coffin of SIU should get added to the list after breaking the I-AA PAT record.
