Here are my top 5s. Note that this is how I project it. I believe Caraun Reid is a top 3 defensive player but the Ivy League doesn't have the voting support and he didn't quite have the numbers. If he had done what he did this past weekend a couple more times then I would project him to be at least #3, maybe #2. Dozier may not even be added to the list by TSN but I had to put him in here. If he showed up against everyone like he did against LSU he might be an early 2nd round pick.

PAYTON TOP 5

1. QB Jimmy Garoppolo, Eastern Illinois, Sr.
320-492, 4489 yards, 48 TDs, 8 INT, 65.0%, 170.6 pass eff., 374.1 yds/gm, 54 carries, 46 yards, 0.9ypc, 2 TDs in 12 games.

2. QB Vernon Adams, Eastern Washington, Soph.
261-393, 4059 yards, 46 TDs, 12 INT, 66.4%, 185.7 pass eff., 338.2 yds/gm, 105 carries, 491 yards, 4.7ypc, 4 TDs in 12 games.

3. RB Terrance West, Towson, Jr.
301 carries, 1865 yards, 6.2ypc, 30 TDs, 155.4 yds/gm, 18 catches, 185 yards, 10.3ypc, 1 TD in 12 games.

4. QB Bryan Bennett, Southeastern Louisiana, Jr.
171-275, 2610 yards, 18 TDs, 9 INT, 62.2%, 157.0 pass eff., 217.5 yds/gm, 152 carrries, 934 yards, 6.1ypc, 14 TDs in 12 games.

5. RB Zach Zenner, South Dakota State, Jr.

NEXT 5 (IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER)

LT Dakota Dozier, Furman, Sr.
Three-time All-SoCon and two-time All-American who almost pitched a shutout at LSU with around 10 knockdown blocks, no sacks allowed, and was fantastic as the season went on. Best OL in FCS and likely top 100 draft pick.

QB Quinn Epperly, Princeton, Jr.
208-306, 2137 yards, 25 TDs, 3 INT, 68.0%, 151.6 pass eff., 213.7 yds/gm, 115 carries, 570 yards, 5.0ypc, 18 TDs, 57.0 yds/gm in 10 games.

QB Brock Jensen, North Dakota State, Sr.

John Robertson should finish in the Top 5 in Payton voting. Here's how he stacks up:
8th Nationally in rushing yards (only quarterback in the top 25 rushers)
6th Nationally in rushing yards per game
4th Nationally in rushing touchdowns (11-game season mind you)
9th Nationally in total offense per game

Throw in his passing stats which are not mind blowing, but are very efficient of 1957 yds on 68.4% completion percentage. 13TDs/7INT

Marcus Cox picked up his record 6th SoCon Freshman of the Week award today.

Marcus Cox set or tied five Appalachian State records in the Mountaineers’ 48-27 win over Western Carolina on Saturday. Cox rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns in the win and added two receptions for 19 yards and a score. His 215 yards on the ground were a new school record, as were his four total touchdowns. The Dacula, Ga., native also set single-season freshman records as he closed the year with 1,250 rushing yards and 21 total touchdowns. Cox closed the season with 1,809 yards from scrimmage, tops among freshmen at Appalachian State.

One of the very, very bright spots on this year's App team. He's going to continue being a fun one to watch the next three seasons.

I think it's Kupp (I voted for Kupp) but I had Cox as a close second. Had Cox not had the couple of games where his production was really low I would have put him #1 on my ballot. Both are really good.

Quite frankly not scheduling a 12th game may have cost a playoff birth and a Payton. 7-5 with our losses @BC (by 10) @Fordham (by 3), @UNH (by 1), @UNH (by 2), and @JMU (by 10) would have been an interesting debate given the playoff field. And if that game was against a cupcake, imagine what that would have done to Robertson's stats

Kupp for Rice, Baldwin for Robinson (was snubbed in 2010), and Adams for the Payton. xcoffeex

In all seriousness, I'm feeling pretty good about getting at least one of the above. Most likely Kupp for the Rice Award, although I think the other two have very strong cases. All things considered, Garoppolo and Adams are pretty even, IMO. Both have the same number of TD's, although Garoppolo has two more through the air, and Adams two more on the ground. Garoppolo has roughly 400 yards more passing, but Adams has roughly 450 more yards rushing. Adams has also led the FCS in efficiency all season, and has a better completion percentage.

There may be some who deserve it equally (haven't seen 'em all play, so how would I know), but I am certain that none deserve the Rice Award more than Mercer's QB, John Russ. I won't requote his stats except to add that he also caught a long TD pass last Sat...throwback to QB, but not the 'standing alone in the end zone' type. It was the 'great catch/lots of YAC for 6 type.' Besides that and his abundant stats - just look at TD responsibility - in Mercer's offense, he called most of the plays at the line based on the defensive alignment and then made the right decisions almost every play in a wide variety of zone read, power read, and 'old-school' options that made them the #2 rushing offense in the FCS. Something that 'informs' about his decision-making is that when Mercer's other Rice Candidate, Peyton Usher, RB, went out for (essentially) the season, the next guy stepped in and gained MORE YPC. Both fantastic players, but the fact that Russ was letting them 'have the ball' at the right times had a whole lot to do with their success. Think BeastMode / "Putting the team on my back doe" - He did it every week! Without Russ, Mercer is probably 6-6...at best...instead of 10-2. Not just about running and decision-making either - check his yards/completion, TD's/Attempt, and passing efficiency stats. Completion % isn't the best, but his TE is a converted HS Center and his #2 WR is a converted QB...they are and will be great players, but, frankly, Russ had a few more than his share of completions dropped this year while those guys learned their positions.

"Tagged' him when he was a HS Junior as a player I would love to have on 'my team' while watching a film swap from the team we (HS Team I help Coach) were playing the week after he wrecked them. Did the same thing to them his Sr year and I was elated when I saw Mercer had picked him up. Now I get to watch him every week! BTW - I coached against Taylor Heinicke (2012 Payton Award Winner) 3x when he was in HS. Amazing player....and a better passer than Russ, no doubt. That said, and no disrespect to Heinicke, but I'd take Russ over him all day because I want a QB with QB skills, but who plays the position with the mentality and toughness of an OLman. John Russ does that every play, every week!

Cox did not have any Oline help until Ga Southern and beyond.
App actually had a very good freshman class... RB Cox, LB John Law, P Crittcher and a few more...Crittcher was MVP of first 5 games.

Well-deserved honor for Russ. Hoping the Rice voters will take note of the qualities that the PFL's Coaches clearly saw.

Marcus certainly has some solid stats. Led SoCon in rushing (by 200 yards) with 1250 yards that is the 3rd highest in conference history for freshmen. Led SoCon in scoring with 126 points and TD's with 21 - 15 rushing 6 receiving. 2nd in conference in All Purpose yards. 8th in conference in receptions per game and 10th in receiving yards per game. Not bad for a kid who didn't start until the 3rd game of the season.
