According to the Central Connecticut SID, the answer is yes! Check out Justise's resume from CCSU's most recent game notes:

Justise, Justise and More Justise
Senior running back Justise Hairston has separated himself as a Walter Payton Award candidate this season and his numbers back-up his claim as one of the top I-AA players in the country. He had the game of his life in a 62-21 victory over St. Francis (PA) on Saturday afternoon. Playing for just the second time at home this season Hairston set a school and Northeast Conference record with 332 rushing yards and tied a school and NEC record with five touchdowns as the Blue Devils rolled to 5-1 on the season. Hairston rushed the ball only 23 times in the game. The first two times he touched the ball Hairston scored touchdowns. The first came from 62 yards and the second from 70, as he racked up 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns on his first two carries. Hairston rushed six times for 196 yards in the first quarter alone. Hairston scored three more times in the game (8, 1, 11) and averaged an amazing 14.4 yards per carry in the victory. He lost only three yards on the day among his 23 carries. Hairston has now amassed 991 yards and 12 touchdowns in six games, and is averaging 8.5 yards per carry on the season. He also...

...leads the country in rushing at 165.2 yards per game.
...leads the country in rushing yardage with 991.
...leads the country in yards per carry at 8.5.
...is second in the country in rushing touchdowns with 12.
...has the top two individual rushing performances this season (332, 241)
...is third in the country in scoring at 12.0 points per game.
...leads country in all-purpose yards at 215.0 per game.

10 or More for Hairston
Perhaps one of the most amazing stats for senior running back Justise Hairston is the number of long runs he has put together this season. Hairston has 23 rushes of 10 or more yards this season, 14 of 20 or more yards, eight of 30 or more, six of 40 or more and five of 50 or more. He has touchdown runs of 46, 56, 62, 68 and 70 yards on the year. On Saturday in the win over St. Francis (PA) he had three runs of over 50 yards in the game, two resulting in scores. He has four touchdown runs of at least 46 yards in the last two weeks alone.

No, Hairston is not a candidate for the Payton award.

He's good. Really, really good. But not a candidate. Why? Becuase he had all of 72 yards against a weak Marist team and 58 yards in a crucial early game against Albany. The past two week's, Hairston has run for his yards against two horrendous teams, SFPA and St. Peter's. His only other games above 100 were against Georgia Southern and Southern Connecticut, and S-Conn is a D-II team.

Rip apart Robert Morris, Monmouth, and Stony Brook and maybe he can enter back into the discussion. Numbers don't mean everything in the awards discussion...your opponents factor in too.

Putting up 200 and 300 against horrible teams does not make you a candidate for the best offensive player in the country
