Pure and simple, our special teams cost us this game. First we convert a 2 point conversion to go up by 7, but wait, ineligible receiver negates the 2 point conversion and we have to settle for 1. We lost by one. Then, we drive the ball down to the 1 yard line, with about 3 minutes to go, for the easiest field goal possible and boink it off the upright. Obviously we just weren't destined to win this game. What can you say.

Hoss8091
October 7th, 2006, 11:50 PM
Penalties killed us. We should have had the two point conversion, which would have put us in overtime. On IlSU’s last touchdown drive, an offsides on third and long gave IlSU two chances to get a first down, then pass interference on the goal line gave IlSU a fresh set of downs. I did not see any pass interference, but I was in the cheap seats and wear glasses. Any one of these plays would have changed the game. The missed field goal, well, it happens. Our kicker will win games for us in the future.

Now the positives for WKU, the offense was clicking on all eight cylinders and was well balanced. Jake Gaebler is making life difficult for opposing defenses, because defenses can no longer concentrate only on covering Curtis Hamilton. Lerron Moore played well and ran hard. Justin Haddix is making passes this year that he could not make last year. The offense has come a long way since Eastern Kentucky.

Overall, I think it was a great game with a disappointing ending (at least if you are a Western Kentucky Fan).

From the broadcast by ILS, the PI occurred early right at the goal line...apparently it was more holding than PI but a good call, jus should have been holding which also carries an automatic 1st down...

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- A missed field goal attempt by Western Kentucky's Chris James gave Illinois State a 28-27 win Saturday, its first over Western Kentucky since the Hilltoppers joined the Gateway Conference in 2001.

Illinois State's biggest drives of the game came right before and after halftime. With just 2:22 to play in the first half, the Redbirds ran 80 yards in nine plays and scored when quarterback Luke Drone found fullback Garin Harcar open for a one-yard touchdown with just 22 seconds remaining.

The Redbirds carried that momentum in the second half as they ran 78 yards on 10 plays before halfback Pierre Rembert ran it from 13-yards out for the score, making it a 21-13 Illinois State lead.

Western answered as Rashad Etheridge returned the ball 47 yards to the Redbird 47-yard line. Five plays later Moore punched it in for a one-yard touchdown.

Western took the lead on its next possession when Haddix connected with Hamilton for a 45-yard scoring strike. Haddix followed with a completion on the two-point conversion, which was negated by an illegal man down field penalty.

Illinois State got its most impressive drive of the game to open up the fourth quarter. Rembert led the Redbird charge as he carried the ball eight times on a 13-play, 80-yard drive, which he capped off with a two-yard plunge into the endzone. With a Kevin Mazur kick Illinois State had all the lead it would need at 28-27.

Western was able to drive the ball down to the Redbird one-yard line, but elected to kick the field goal on fourth down. With the ball lined up on the left hash, James kick ricocheted off the cross bar and back into the end zone.

even if he made the FG we had plenty of time to drive and score.... GREAT WIN BABY! GO BIRDS!

WKU, you guys are probably the best 2-3 team in the nation... WOW...

Of course you had time to score, but that doesn't mean you would have scored. You would not have had time to run your normal offense all the way down he field. But, who knows. Since we missed a chip shot, no one will ever know. We shot ourselves in the foot and it cost us dearly. Congrats on the win.

I would have to disagree with that statement. We scored to end the 1st half on a great drive with only 2:00 mins or so to go. We had all three timeouts. I know no one will ever know what would have happened, but I am confident with over 4:00 mins left that we would have been able to at least get in FG position. Our kickers have been shaky should it could have been interesting but like you said, we will never know...

All I know is that he missed the closes field goal kick possible, considering we had the ball at the one yard line. It was basically an extra point and he boinked it off the upright. You have to make that kick, particularly under those circumstances.

our kicker banked one in off the uprights from about the same distance.

He probably is. Wingert missed 2 easy kicks this week and barely banked one in after missing a 50 yd FG to beat Iowa State. xcoffeex
