CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Gardner-Webb quarterback Lucas Beatty (Charlotte, N.C.) has been named the Choice Hotels Big South Football Offensive Player of the Week, while Liberty cornerback Kenny Scott (Appomattox, Va.) has been selected as Defensive Player of the Week for games played the sixth week of the regular-season. Presbyterian punter Stephen Doar (Landrum, S.C.) is the Special Teams Player of the Week and Gardner-Webb tight end Mike Estes (Raleigh, N.C.) is The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week.
Beatty had a career-best passing day against Charlotte, as he was 35-of-52 for 389 yards and four touchdowns. He finished with 393 yards of total offense, and his 35 completions are tied for second-most in a single-game in Big South history. He staked GWU to a 10-point lead three different times in the first half and was 21-of-28 for 246 yards and three scores in the first 30 minutes. Beatty led three long scoring drives in the second half and tallied his fourth TD pass to open the second half scoring.
Scott recorded five tackles, two interceptions and a pass break-up at Old Dominion. Four of his five tackles were solo stops and both of his interceptions came in the end zone to keep the Monarchs off the scoreboard. Scott’s two picks helped the Flames hold ODU to less than half of its scoring average, and he tallied one of Liberty’s seven pass break-ups on the night.
Doar averaged 40.4 yards on eight punts at Wofford, with a net average of 37.6 yards. He placed two of his punts inside the 20-yard line and had just three returned. Doar boomed seven of his eight punts more than 40 yards, including a 49-yarder. He also handled placekicking duties for the first time and was successful on two PAT attempts.
Estes caught a career-high four passes for 74 yards and his first career touchdown against Charlotte. All four of his catches went for first downs and all four occurred in the second half. His 27-yard touchdown catch from receiver Richard Jules put Gardner-Webb ahead 45-24 in the third quarter. Estes added catches of 10 and 22 yards to keep GWU’s final scoring drive alive.
