Glad to see that we have The Citadel visiting in 2015. If we do schedule an FCS team, I'd like for it to be someone that our fan base is familiar with.

Uh uh.

We want a piece of those bazillions you guys will be soaking up in the Sun Belt.

The only SoCon school I can see App playing in the next five-ish years is ETSU and I have zero problems with that.

Are you not familiar enough with NDSU?

I'd like to see us be about 10-3 by the time we roll into the 'Boro.

With all due respect to the Citadel, I'm not a fan of this. I understand it may not be immediately possible or maybe we needed a 1 game series, but I'm looking forward to the days when we're scheduling lower level FBS schools from the MAC or similar conferences. Bring on Kent State or Miami of Ohio.

This is surprising, I thought we had some Citadel fans claiming they wouldn't play Hillybilly U and pig's something or other after this year...

Don't be surprised if WCU gets a game in the near future based on the close relationships of the coaching staffs.

Games against GSU when they are FBS would be less competitive than the semifinals were.

NDSU 45 GSU 3

There's actually something about being PAID to go to Statesboro that has a nice ring to it.

Well that has always been part of the equation, some fans refused to believe a one for none game would happen. I certainly didn't think it would be year two.

Perhaps this is part of a larger agreement in which GSU and Citadel play in baseball, basketball, etc.

$250,000 is fairly cheap, especially when you can get $350-450K for playing an SEC or ACC game.

I'm really surprised the the Citadel would pick GSU over a larger (richer) opponent.

It is interesting that GSU is playing a non-counter in 2016, a year in which they are bowl-eligible.

Appy plays a non-counter next year (when they are not bowl-eligible)

I thought wins over D1 FCS teams counted for bowl eligibility.

Only "counters", I forget the exact definition, but no or low scholarship teams don't count (in these cases Jacksonville and Campbell)
The cutoff is 57 "equivalencies".

The Citadel is already playing an SEC team in 2015, South Carolina. The game against GSU will be a second FBS matchup.

The Citadel should still have two spots open on its OOC slate in 2015.

I do believe that we are no longer playing Jacksonville. That was an existing game before we moved to the Sun Belt. Likewise, the UGA game the same year isn't locked in yet either. GSU is trying to renegotiate the contract now that we're I-A.

If we could get a CAA game vs either Richmond or W&M, and maybe a game against JSU to fill those slots, that would be a helluva schedule.

One of those two games is likely going to be a home game against somebody like Presbyterian.

The second slot is probably going to remain open for at least another year, in case the SoCon were to add another football-playing member by next summer.

2014:

08/30 - at NC State (http://www.anygivensaturday.com/ncaa/acc/nc-state-wolfpack.php)
09/13 - at Georgia Tech (http://www.anygivensaturday.com/ncaa/acc/georgia-tech-yellow-jackets.php)
09/20 - Duquesne
11/15 - at Navy (http://www.anygivensaturday.com/ncaa/indep/navy-midshipmen.php)

Of all the FBS teams to play, you get Navy and Georgia Tech. Coincidence or intentional? Either way that is a good matchup for GSU.

Part of it is the connections our coaching staff has with both of those coaching staffs.

A lot of it is difficulty in getting teams to play us because of our offense. I know some people will scoff at me saying that, but it's true. If you were to make a list of the top 25 FCS programs, just about all of them would have multiple FBS wins while we have none. There's a reason for that.

Another interesting anecdote...when Saban coached at LSU Georgia Southern tried to get a game with them. Will Muschamp watched some video of our offense and summarily told Saban to call GSU back and say that they weren't going to play us.

No Saban is the one that nixed it after watching tape.

The semifinals were competitive, therefore these games would be less competitive as NDSU crushed FBS GSU :p.

As long as GT runs the TO, especiall under PJ, then I would think that ACC schools with a legit chance to win the ACC would want to play you guys as practice. Especially once you're fully FBS.

Honestly, I would love for Furman to schedule GSU and ASU after this year. I hate to see it all end. But as long as we can get big money games from the FBS I don't see it happening. But if the Citadel can pull it off, hopefully we can too.

It's going to be more difficult once ETSU joins the league for football and the SoCon returns to an eight-game conference schedule. That will leave three OOC games for each team (in most years), and for most schools at least one of those games is going to be a BCS guarantee contest.

The Charleston Post and Courier reports today that the Citadel will get $175,000 for this game.

That seems rather cheap to me, maybe there is something else involved with the deal.

I doubt it. There's not much travel involved at all so that'll keep their expenses down. I think El Cid allowed themselves to get a little fleeced on the deal though.

It's an easy trip for $175K, not really anything to be fleeced about, especially when it's an 11-game slate and a BCS school is already on the schedule.

The same article mentions some additions to The Citadel's 2014 out-of-conference schedule. The Bulldogs will play non-league opponents:

Florida State
Charlotte
Coastal Carolina
Gardner-Webb
Charleston Southern

FSU will be on the road; Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina will be at home. Not sure about G-W and Charlotte (at least one will likely also be played at Johnson Hagood Stadium).

If we win all of the last three do we get the Big South autobid?
