CCSU at Lehigh, Mr. C's Official Game Thread

It is a lazy, sunny, summer afternoon at Goodman Stadium. One of those days that makes you wonder if Lehigh alums will make it out of the parking lot from a morning filled with tailgating. Goodman Stadium is a beautiful setting for football. It reminds me a lot of those fall afternoon at Furman's Paladin Stadium in Greenville, S.C., with the venue being rimmed by rolling hills and trees. It will be Lehigh's first game since the disappointment of being left out of the playoffs with a 10-1 record last season. Of course, it has been well-documented that — in a lot of critics (including this one's) minds — it was the worst FCS playoff field ever put together by the NCAA Division I Football Committee. You get the idea that Lehigh is itching, after a week extra to start, to get on the field and take things out on someone. Central Connecticut State has developed into one of the best programs in the Northeast Conference under coach Jeff McInerney, who cut his teeth in FCS as an assistant coach with Tim Stowers and Georgia Southern's lauded program. But the Blue Devils are coming off an uncharacteristic 2-8 campaign, in which CCSU opened the year with five consecutive losses. Both teams have something to prove as they try to get the season off to a strong start and CCSU has already lost 38-14 last week at James Madison.

Lehigh won last year's game 35-14 at CCSU and holds a 2-1 lifetime advantage in the series with the Blue Devils.

The last time I was at Goodman Stadium was a classic overtime battle between New Hampshire and Lehigh in 2011. UNH won 48-41 on a horrible officiating call when Joey Orlando went out of bounds, came back in and caught the winning TD pass and the officials somehow missed what everyone saw.

Interesting fact from the game notes: Lehigh is the only FCS team to win at least 10 games in the past three seasons. The Mountain Hawks are 31-6 during that time and have won 19 of their past 20 regular-season games.

The biggest question for the Mountain Hawks heading into this season is what to expect at QB. Both senior Brian Bialkowski and junior Matt McHale are expected to see time today. After the season that Chris Lum (my personal offensive player of the year in 2011 in FCS) a couple of years ago, the bar has been raised to a high level for Lehigh quarterbacks.

It is a pleasant 71 degrees at kickoff, with a gentle four MPH wind out of the southwest. The teams have taken the field and Lehigh won the coin toss, deferring receiving the kick until the second half. CCSU will get the ball first.

Tyrell Holmes was knocked down deep in the secondary on the play-action pass to open play, but the officials kept their flags in their pockets. 5 yard run on 2nd down and a short completion from Clements to Tarrantino give CCSU a 1st down at the 38.
