STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — After some Internet difficulties, we are back online and ready for the coin toss as Georgetown meets Wagner in a Patriot League-Northeast Conference battle. Wagner won the toss and has deferred to the second half, so the Hoyas will get the ball.

This is the second straight home game where Wagner has entertained a Patriot League team. The Seahawks downed PL champion Colgate in last year's FCS first-round playoff game 31-20 before losing in a hard-fought second-round game, 29-19, at eventual semifinalist Eastern Washington.

Should be an interesting game as All-American running back Dominique Williams leads the Seahawks and Isaiah Kempt is back at QB for Georgetown after seeing his season end six plays into 2012 with a knee injury. Kempt led the Hoyas to within a game of the PL auto bid in 2011. Wagner is the defending NEC champion and is favored to win again.

Georgetown is dinking and dunking down the field and after one first down has a second and 12 following a penalty.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 12:06 PM
A high snap on third down and a Nick Campanella draw play earns the Hoyas a second third-down conversion by the narrowest of margins at the 38, Elliott Owusu dropped a slant pass in Wagner territory. A completion to DeCicco gives GU another third down conversion at midfield and Kempt hits another couple of throws to the Wagner 32.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 12:07 PM
GU is running its plays from the pistol formation, invented by longtime Nevada coach Chris Ault, a former FCS guy.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 12:17 PM

If your browser isn't opening the NEC Front Row stream for this game, and you're getting an "rtsp error," do this:

1. Open VLC Media Player. Download VLC if you don't have it. It's free and you need it anyhow.

2. Copy this ENTIRE link:

rtsp://packnetwork.live-s.cdn.bitgravity.com/cdn-live/_definst_/packnetwork/live/feed035?ColorBase=000000&ColorControl=666666&ColorHighlight=c0c0c0&ColorFeature=c0c0c0&nc=1

3. In VLC Median Player, Open: Media >>>> Open Network Stream, and then paste the above link where it says "Please Enter a Network URL."

4. In the bottom right corner of the VLC window, click the little drop-down arrow next to the "Play" button, and then click "Stream."

5. Wait for about 30 seconds and it should work for you.

Remember, Georgetown University really, really doesn't like you to watch its football team play, so it's out duty in the PL to keep one step ahead of its tactics. xcoolx

Mr. C

Williams had 6 carries for 52 yards, including one 22-yard burst on that drive. People need to start realizing that Dominique Williams is one of the finest RBs among a strong group in FCS.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 12:31 PM
Georgetown has shown some rhythm to quickly move the ball back into WC territory at the 37.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 12:32 PM

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 12:33 PM
GU is doing a great job on 3rd down conversions. 1st down at the WC 27.

Mr. C

Wagner 7, Georgetown 7.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 12:41 PM
A big pass breakup on a heavy rush up the middle by Daevforces GU into a field goal attempt. The snap goes awry and the Hoyas complete a pass at the 2 for a first down.

Georgetown ran a pitch play to Jo'el Kimpala for a TD two plays later.

Hoyas look quite competent. NDSU they are not, but they're beating the NEC champs 14-7 - something that Colgate couldn't seem to do last season.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 12:46 PM
Wagner is mixing things up nicely as it is back in GU territory at the 40.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 12:46 PM

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 12:55 PM
GU moves down to the WC 35 with a first down, but a holding call sets the Hoyas back to the 45. 2nd and 20.

Mr. C

Daevonte Bennett, a member of the College Sports Journal all-freshman team last season, is wrecking things up front for Georgetown. His sack forces a Hoya punt. WC ball at its 2 after the punt.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:00 PM
GU gets a three and out and WC will punt from its end zone.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:01 PM
With 3:13 left in the half, the Hoyas will start from the WC 48. Nice route and catch by Justin Hill gets the ball to the 31.

Wagner returns the ball to the 24 to start the second half.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:31 PM
Very impressing showing by the Hoyas! Granted, they did beat Wagner last year...
I think that Wagner can move the ball on the Hoya defense, if the Seahawks can get some rhythm and get the ball in Williams' hands.

Kempt has looked good with the short passing game for Georgetown and obviously he is a playmaker.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:33 PM
A nice 3rd-down pass play has moved Wagner into Georgetown territory at the 45.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:33 PM

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:40 PM
Misley missed on a waggle play on 2nd down, but threaded the needle to Watkins for 21 yards to give Wagner some breathing room at the 30.

3rd and 5 upcoming at the 35. Sack by GU kills the drive.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:42 PM
Georgetown is utterly manhandling Wagner's offensive line. No other way to describe it.
Williams is gaining yards almost entirely on his own. I still think Wagner can make this a game if it settles down on offense and starts relying on Williams.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:43 PM
Wagner is also having trouble covering some of GU's receivers.

After a good roll on a punt pushes the ball to the GU 26, a big pass play is negated by an ineligible receiver penalty.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:44 PM
Big 3rd and 12 upcoming for the Wagner defense. Pressure on Kempt and an interception is dropped by CB Eddie Davis near the GU 35. Punt time with 8:23 left in the third.

Williams with some of those slight little moves and he gets seven to the 20. 3rd and 3.

Mr. C

For some reason, Wagner tries to pass again on first down and is sacked. Got to go back to the meal ticket, Williams.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:56 PM
Wagner is going to get back into the game by pounding the ball with Williams, not trying to get cute.

Interception by Georgetown at the GU 47 on third and long.

Lehigh Football Nation
August 31st, 2013, 01:57 PM
Textbook pressure, force a bad Wagner throw, and a great play by (I think) Wharton to make the INT.

First down by GU running to the WC 40.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:58 PM
Pretty TD by Wagner, and we most certainly have a ballgame.
I had to explain to everyone here how to score that play in the stats.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 01:59 PM
Textbook pressure, force a bad Wagner throw, and a great play by (I think) Wharton to make the INT.
That's why Wagner needs to avoid those second and third and long situations.

Mr. C
August 31st, 2013, 02:00 PM
Missed illegal participation for Georgetown on a 3rd down pass that just misses. GU punts for a touchback. Wagner ball with 1:55 left in the third period at the 20.

2nd and 8 after a Williams zone read run. Misley goes read option to the 49. 3rd and a long 5.

Mr. C

Wagner rushed for 195 yards, a decent but not overwhelming number.

But take a look at Georgetown's time of possession.

1st Qtr 10:33
2nd Qtr 07:04
3rd Qtr 05:29
4th Qtr 03:42

Not a lot of teams win with numbers like that.

Looking back, this was a game of second-half adjustment by Hameline and Wagner. Whatever worked for the Hoyas in the first half was obliterated by something Wagner did in the 2nd. They shut down the offense, the defense finally wore down, and Wagner won the game. Also, can't emphasize that great run by Williams enough for the Seahawks final TD.

Simple switch from three down to a four-man front in the second half by Wagner. More pressure on Kempt meant less time to find those open receivers.

How about some of the PL crowd giving Wagner some credit here. Wagner is the defending NEC champion and went to the second round of the playoffs. Williams is one of the best backs in FCS and a probable NFL draft choice. Georgetown struggled in the second half, but the addition of Kempt again at least gives the Hoyas something to build around on offense.

As talented as Wagner is, the game hung on two great individual plays, the double move INT for TD (I say that was bad playcalling, but it also was a great athletic move), and Williams' reversal of field against a gassed Hoya defense, a great individual effort no matter how you look at it. I'd also add the 4th down conversion to set up that run, too, a pure power move that worked perfectly.

Georgetown I felt really had them on the ropes. Their defense made a heroic effort to keep them in the entire game. The difference came down to those great athletic 1-on-1 moves and coaching.

Sorry Mr C, but was not impressed with Wagner in this game. QB looked weak as a passer. Good run game and good D adjustment that Hoyas could not overcome in second half. Better coaching by Hoyas and they win the game.
