Much like their basketball program. They had one good year in 2008, but prior to that they have been a sub .500 for the vast majority of the last 50 years. Long long ago they were one of the "blue bloods" - back when the MVC had Kansas, Cinci, Louisville, etc...

I don't know what happened but they've gone from great athletics but terrible athletics.

All I remember reading last year was THIS IS THE YEAR YSU BEATS UNI! YSU WILL CRUSH PEOPLE!

YSU beat UNI and the trumpeting got louder....you could see from the reaction of the players, coaches, and fans they thought more of that win than any win since their last title, and maybe more than that one. They then had a bye week to do nothing except celebrate and party.

NDSU **** stomped them as a result.

I really, with every inch of my body, believe that all YSU has cared about the last 7 years or so was beating UNI. They built the team around 1 game and 1 team. They got that W and didn't know what to do with themselves....still don't.

Probably right with that.

Most teams in the Valley circle the UNI game on their schedule. But putting all your eggs in one basket is not good. NDSU will probably not go undefeated and might have multiple losses this year but as long as they make a deep run and possible NC then that is OK with this fan. Even losing to UNI as long as they win the NC.

YSU must have put everything into beating UNI last year cus they laid a huge egg with NDSU....but NDSU had a lot to do with it.

YSU is 7-20 all time against UNI...that sticks in their craw.

What really sticks in their craws even more is that prior to last year the last time YSU beat UNI was 2000 - 11 games in a row....14 of the last 17.

YSU has just 4 wins against UNI since UNI went D1 in 1985....

WIU thrashing Hampton 42-9

Our offense still needs some work, a lot of that was our Defense...9 turnovers (two of them INTs for TDs) for us. Good sign for the future, despite a lack of offensive output (although significantly better than the last two years), we had no turnovers against us...no fumbles, no interceptions thrown by our new QB. Our freshman kicker does really well on punts and kickoffs, still needs a bit of confidence on FGs and XPs though. Still, at this point, it looks like a pretty good improvement over last year.

My long time prediction is happening sooner than I thought.

I've predicted for a couple years now that when Bell was gone ISUb was going to go right back to where they were. Maybe not 1-58 bad again - but fight with USD for last place/2-3 wins per year bad.

There is likely only one coach in the entire nation that could/believed he could win at Indiana State - Trent Miles. In 5 years he took ISUb from the middle of that 1-58 record to 7 wins. He is an Indiana State alum and played at Indiana State. If ANYONE could get fans excited, get players to believe/buy in, get the school rallied, anything it was him.

He got them to 7-4, saw that was realistically the top as Bell was flirting with the NFL, and the team had/has NOTHING beside Bell for any kind of playmaker at any position, and BOLTED FOR GEORGIA FREAKING STATE. What, being honest with yourself, does that tell you about that program?

USD will soon have a cellar mate

USD will probably be a 4-6th place team in a very few short years, very occasionally being a 2nd or 3rd place team. Probably a lot like Illinois State. Probably by the '15-16 season USD will be a solid middle of the pack MVFC team. To be fair, UND will probably win the big sky by then.

All USD has to do is tap Minnesota and Nebraska along with some SD kids and they will be a top 25 FCS team now and again.

Now, I'm not claming they are going to be a super power, but they will be a solid MVFC team.

That's assuming the beat SDSU, NDSU, UNI, or even UND out for those kids that are actually "worth" playing in the D1 level of the MVFC.

UND has some upside right now because they hit a home run with a stud receiver in Harden and decent support. But they have questions pretty much everywhere else. I need to see a legit qb before I start thinking anything close to big sky champ.

Good.

The posters I remember the names of were something like guinzone and/or guinpower.

Wasn't me even though I can't stand your liberal university.

Very doubtful.

USD will be a bottom half Valley team for many years.

Bears fans are a lot like YSU fans....most years they talk about how this is finally the year. They get pissy when I, and others, tell them no.they them end up watching the same results of not even coming close to expectations.

This year is different though. Both seem to be real down on their teams...strange shift from past years. Maybe reality is setting in with where they belong in the MVFC pecking order

Pretty ugly first games for most teams. Very disappointed in the ISUr game. I picked them to beat Ball State and they had them on the ropes but pissed down their leg. ISUb is in serious trouble if Bell is out for awhile. That poor kid has taken a 4 year beating for them! YSU looked mediocre at best. I'm still not sure what their problem is but it looks like it starts with the HC. MSU, not much to say really, they may very well get beat by USD this year.

I really thought they would win last night at home.

Me too, disappointed that they will probably suck again this year.

If UND ever plays Midwest style defense and run oriented football they will be competing with Montana for the Sky.

Based on tradition, I'd agree we belong at the bottom of the MVFC.

Given the school, resources, decent fan base considering what we've been feed the last 20 years, I can't disagree more.

But, as they say, football is a whole different animal.

I really don't know what Allen did to warrant getting to year 7, or 8. I don't even know anymore! It's disgusting and bringing in reject coaches just won't work.

USD is not a good program right now and you like to constantly point that out. I am sure you are frustrated that NDSU AND SDSU have blown by your program. Your FB program's best days are behind you.

NDSU AND SDSU regularly take your recruits and even USD got one of your commitments to decommit and go to USD this past year.

USD will finish in the top 3 of the MVFC before UNI wins it outright. Neither will happen anytime soon though.

Disagree. UNI has a good team this year and will be even more of a force with Kollmorgen the following two years.

SDSU has not surpassed UNI and that my friend is a fact.

And last night was a disappointing night to say the least for the MVFC. Really hope the teams can bounce back. On the bright side I did not expect WIU to come out like they did. It may have just been Hampton, but that is a team they would have struggled with in the past so hopefully they are headed in the right direction.

Serious question...and I know coming from me it will be douchey.

What the **** happened over in Ohio? 12 months ago the listening to the fan base it was YSU is going to win the next 4 titles at least. Wolford is the best coach in the nation, brining in SEC talent. Blah blah blah.

It's like the entire program the last decade has been built around trying to beat UNI and now that it happened **** is all over and falling apart...again...Sometimes on-paper talent differs from on-field talent---also recall somebody boasting about getting recruits from Florida--something YSU has been doing for the last 25 years anyway.

Idk about hess, but I have seen Wolford lose games for YSU that were all but wrapped up with horrendous play calling/clock management. So have I--Doubt that Hess will look this bad consistently--I expected him to tear up this team from his hometown of Dayton.

Indeed. There's still a LOT of work to do, but there's definitely some signs of progress. One of our local media guys did a great summary of the "feel" of the team this year: Leathernecks’ cool is the new way (http://www3.thehawkeye.com/bohnenkamp_blog/?p=2207). Essentially, there was good, there was some good stuff, some mediocre stuff, and definitely some bad stuff...but the big change is that the bad stuff didn't cause full-on "blowups". A mistake would be made, but then they'd recover and get back to what they know. Last year we started the season with a pretty mediocre FCS team as well (Butler), but whereas last year, we got a bit of a lead, but then kinda blew up and let them get back in the game (eventually winning 23-15), this year, we got a bit of a lead, and kept the pressure on the whole game, rolling out 23 points in the second half alone, while only allowing Hampton a FG.

Like last year, our second game is against a Div. II opponent (this year, Quincy University, last year, U of Indianapolis) before heading out for our money game (s) (this year, Minnesota and UNLV; last year was Iowa State).

What's great is next year should be even better...

Look at our 2 deep for this week:
22 starters and only 5 are seniors
50 names on the depth charge - only 9 seniors

Looking at the QB, RB, FB, WR, TE on the entire roster, there are only two seniors. One of them is a fullback. We almost never use fullbacks. The other is a WR with 44 career receiving yards.

You could say "Well, they are clearly too young then". That would be true if we didn't play so many freshman/sophomores last season
