If we had last years defense I would pick us for the upset in spite of how sloppy the offense looks so far. The other reason is that we aren't strong enough at QB. Illinois is bad enough to get picked off by an FCS but from what I've seen so far we'd need three defense/special teams scores to do it.

I know this is probably now a less than optimal match for the MVFC win, with Sycs lost some of the their players and their coach and the Hoosiers picking up steam as a B1G program.

No way, if they couldn't do it with their QB from last year and a coach that has been running the show for awhile, it is not going to happen now.

UNI is an iffy pick, but they underachieved last year and that has got to have them riled up, and UNI is typically very strong against FBS competition.

SIU is unlikely, but Illinois is bad.

Last years Illinois state would have beaten Ball state or atleast given them one hell of a fight, this year they may be able to squeak it out.

WIU can suck all they want, I don't think they would lose to many MEAC teams.

Missouri state seems to be getting a little bit better, I really don't think they will look like the past few years, and they will probably post a winning record this season. Out of the cellar into the lower part of the middle imo. Just enough for TA to keep his job.

A battle of two lesser-known Ohio football teams concludes the Thursday schedule, but Youngstown State is no lightweight team. Youngstown State went 7-4 last year and split its MVFC schedule equally at 4-4. Youngstown State has lost nine straight matches to Dayton, so the team is hungry to make sure the 10th loss in a row does not take place. A battle of two lesser-known Ohio football teams concludes the Thursday schedule, but Youngstown State is no lightweight team. Youngstown State went 7-4 last year and split its MVFC schedule equally at 4-4. Youngstown State has lost nine straight matches to Dayton, so the team is hungry to make sure the 10th loss in a row does not take place. Dayton competes in the Pioneer League for football and there the Flyers went 5-3 (6-5 overall). Will the 10th time be the charm?

If Illinois State plays its best game, it's winnable. Unfortunately, the benefits of fresh legs and being injury-free early in the year somewhat balancing the depth of BCS schollies is somewhat trumped by the significance of the Prate injury, and the debatable recovery of a LB corps that was banged up as camp wound down. There is some skepticism in how confident Wenning will be in his very recently repaired knee, but not enough to tip the scales there for me. I do think Ball State will be one of those fun teams to root for when we are done playing them, as they seem to be a competitive temporary team-to-follow as they challenge the Huskies during the MAC campaign.

For now, though, it's a nice, highly-competitive gauge as we sort our own depth chart with several position battles and rotations undetermined (a good thing in this instance in terms of options, rather than question marks this year).

I am, admittedly looking forward to the Eastern game with equal guided pessimism. I do think that game will be a potential second-round playoff preview, so, above all, I hope we can emerge from Muncie with minimal additional injuries and some more clarity in who will be stacking up where when Valley play comes around (again, if competition breeds collateral depth due to a wealth of talent at some spots rather than attrition, this is a great thing we're striving for).

34-20 Ball State at the end of the day. Avoid the turnovers, hope for a few 50-50 balls or a lucky bounce on a fumble, but let's not hold our breath. Hope I'm pleasantly surprised by the more vertical attack, but realize that precision and some first-game giddy-up may have that off-tempo whereas our line advantage, glut of backs, and TOP preference may mean a lower-scoring (yes, 54 is a low guesstimate considering the potential of both offenses) affair, that I'd predict were I simply looking at the game statistically.

Out of character, but realistic, I'd be content with a well-played "L" against a superior, but not overwhelming foe (I LOVE our FBS games and it's become a family tradition to plan mini-trips around these affairs be it Minny, Ames, Lawrence, Columbia, Huntington, Evanston, Chambana, etc., but from a program standpoint, sometimes prefer these MAC games to BIG 10/XII games for competitive purposes). Just busting at the seems for Thursday to come around - I know my wife can't wait for me to shut up and let the game get here already!
