After hiring George Welsh and Dick Sheridan as advisors, ODU announced they will hire a head coach in January of 2007.

We will begin DI-AA play in 2009 and will join CAA play in 2011. Our AD, Jim Jarrett said we are speeding up the hiring timetable to get better organized so we can compete at league level by 2011.

"Both Welsh and Sheridan say they are not interested in the coaching job"

Knowing a little bit about Welsh, I think he'd take the job in a second.

I'm impressed with ODU's approach. Redshirting the entire 1st year class is a great idea to hit the ground running. These guys will all be 4th year juniors when they hit the CAA in 2011. ODU looks to be competitive in 2011. They are sure to attract quality applicants.

So it really sounds like ODU will be ready to join CAA Football for the 2011 season. That would bring the CAA to a total of 13 teams -- 7 schools would be full CAA members and 6 would be FB-only members.

What happens next?

Does the CAA invite Independent Stony Brook as the 14th member?

Does the 4 New England affilates (Maine, UMass, UNH, URI) leave the CAA to begin a new footbaly-only conference with Stony Brook and possibly some others (Villanova, Albany, CCSU, or Fordham)?

Does the CAA further expand and then split into 2 all-sports conferences?

It sure looks like some changes are coming in the next 5 years.
