Laird was off to an outstanding start to the 2012 season, posting 12 tackles and a pair of interceptions before suffering a season-ending injury four games into the year. He made six tackles, a career high, and intercepted a pair of passes as well as a two-point conversion at Fordham. Laird notched four tackles at Bucknell and even caught a 21-yard pass against the Bison. He was granted a letter after starting at safety in each of the team's first four games. He played in all 10 contests as a sophomore in 2011, earning a varsity letter after making 12 total tackles. While primarily seeing time on special teams, he also earned time at safety and linebacker. He has since settled back into the safety position. Laird had a career-high four tackles in the win over Wagner and also made two stops against both Brown and Penn. Laird earned a letter as a freshman in 2010 after registering 12 tackles in seven contests. Laird had a breakout game in the Big Red's win over Princeton, registering nine tackles. He had four stops on special teams during the season.

At Mission College Prep
A second-team all-state selection by maxpreps.com and calhisports.com as a senior at Mission College Prep HS, Laird excelled on both sides of the field. A two-year captain, he played a large role in helping his school to its first-ever league championship. A two-time first-team all-league pick and two-time all-county selection, Laird was pressed into quarterback duty as a senior and threw for 827 yards and 10 touchdowns, rushed for 1,171 yards and 14 scores with four 100-yard games, and still caught 22 passes for 322 yards and six more touchdowns. On the defensive side, he posted 49 tackles and 10 interceptions. Laird was a three-sport star (basketball and baseball).
