The Coastal Carolina football team, tabbed the preseason favorite to win the 2013 Big South Championship, is ranked 21st in the FCS Coaches Preseason poll, which was announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Chanticleers finished the 2012 season ranked 24th in the final FCS Coaches Poll after winning a share of the Big South Championship, earning the Big South's automatic berth to the NCAA Division I FCS Championship and defeating Bethune-Cookman in the first round of the playoffs for CCU's first football postseason win.

Also making the preseason FCS Coaches Poll was 2013 CCU opponent Eastern Kentucky (19th), who received one first-place vote. Big South members Liberty (31st-tie) and Gardner-Webb (48th-tie) were listed among those receiving votes.

The FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference.

For the second straight season, the North Dakota State Bison will start the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the FCS Coaches Preseason Poll. The Bison are coming off back-to-back FCS National Championships in 2011 and 2012, going 28-2 over that. NDSU received 23 of 26 first place votes to earn the top spot.

Montana State is No. 2, while fellow Big Sky-member Eastern Washington is third. Sam Houston State is fourth and Wofford is fifth. Central Arkansas, South Dakota State, New Hampshire, Villanova and Illinois State round out the top 10.

Coastal features the 2013 Big South Preseason Offensive Player of the Year (Matt Hazel) and Preseason Defensive Player of the Year (Quinn Backus), returns four starting offensive linemen, its top three receivers and five of its top six tacklers from last season.
