After leading the team's freshmen in tackles in 2011, Nelso ranked tied for second on the squad in stops as a sophomore in 2012. A big-play specialist, Nelson recorded 65 tackles with 3.5 for a loss and a sack in 10 contests, including nine starts. Nelson intercepted two passes and broke up five passes. He had picks against both Yale and Princeton, posting 12 tackles against the Tigers. He had nine stops against both Harvard and Dartmouth. Nelson posted 55 tackles and ranked atop the entire team with four pass breakups as a freshman. A starter at strong safety in eight contests, Nelson ranked 16th in the conference in tackles per game in Ivy contests (6.6 per game). He also had an interception and a tackle for loss during the year. Nelso had 10 tackles, an interception and a pass breakup in a win at Princeton and also notched 10 stops, a pass breakup and a tackle for loss against Brown.

At Detroit Catholic Central HS
An academic all-state pick as a senior at Detroit Catholic Central HS, Nelson was a two-year starter and played a key role on a state championship team as a junior. A team captain in 2010, he was part of a district title-winning squad. He posted the highest team grade point average and won an award as the school's top defensive back. He missed half of his senior season with an injury. As a junior, Nelson posted 51 tackles and led the team with four interceptions, including one in the state championship game en route to a perfect 14-0 season. He was named to the all-league and all-county teams and was named to the Detroit News All-Metro North team.
