Stony Brook seniors Miguel Maysonet and Kevin Norrell and junior Michael Bamiro were named to the Associated Press All-America Team on Wednesday afternoon, the Big South's lone representatives on the squad. Maysonet was named to the first team, while Bamiro and Norrell garnered second and third team honors, respectively. The three were also named All-Americans by The Sports Network on Tuesday.
Maysonet, a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, given to the outstanding player in FCS, rushed for 1,964 yards, the 11th most yards in a season in FCS history, and scored 23 total touchdowns.
The 5-10, 210-pound back accounted for more than 100 rushing yards in a game six times and had three games with 200 or more yards in 2012. During a four-game span, he rushed for a career-high three times, capped by a 233-yard, two-touchdown performance at Coastal Carolina.
In Stony Brook's two FBS games this season, Maysonet totaled 158 yards and a touchdown against Syracuse and 220 yards and two scores in a 23-3 win over Army. Maysonet increased his rushing totals in each of three seasons as a Seawolf, rushing for 1,128 yards as a sophomore to 1,633 as a junior to 1,964 as a senior.
When factoring in his freshman season at Hofstra, he finished his career with 5,110 yards, good for 17th all-time in FCS history, and 51 touchdowns, despite averaging only 16 carries per game.
The 2011 and 2012 Big South Offensive Player of the Year recorded 21 games with 100 or more yards, had six games with three touchdowns and is the only player in school and Conference history with two games of four scores.
Maysonet also owns school and Conference records for career rushing yards (4,725), yards per game (127.7), touchdowns (53) and rushing attempts (695).
Part of Maysonet's success was due in large part to the 6-8, 345-pound Bamiro, who started every game at right tackle for a second straight season. Bamiro helped block for two 1,000-yard rushers for a third straight season and a rushing attack that ranked sixth (275.5 ypg) in FCS. Stony Brook reached the 40-point plateau six times this season, scoring a school-record 77 points against Pace.
Norrell's 2012 season will go down as one of the most prolific campaigns in school and Big South history. The All-Conference performer caught 66 passes for 1,388 yards and 15 TDs. He's the only player in Stony Brook history with at least 1,000 receiving yards in a season, and owns the Big South single-season records for yards and yards per catch (21.0) and consecutive 100-yard games (6).
He recorded 100 yards and a touchdown in five straight games, including a school-record 214 yards against Charleston Southern. In back-to-back games against Presbyterian and VMI, Norrell tallied three touchdowns catches. Norrell owns the second and third-longest touchdown receptions with scores of 89 and 86 yards against Central Connecticut and Pace.
Norrell finished his two-year Seawolves career with 20 TDs and 2,061 yards, which are tied for second and third, respectively, in the program's Division I history.
