CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com (http://www.bigsouthsports.com/)) – Stony Brook football player Miguel Maysonet (Riverhead, N.Y.) and Longwood softball player Brooke Short (Hurt, Va.) have been voted the Big South Conference Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year for the 2012-13 season by the League’s Athletics Directors, Senior Woman Administrators and Sports Information Directors, it was announced today by the Conference office.
Maysonet earned 79 points and eight first-place votes in capturing the Howard Bagwell Male Student-Athlete of the Year award, becoming the first football player to receive the honor since the award began in 2000. Maysonet finished ahead of Coastal Carolina soccer All-American Ashton Bennett, who tallied 75 points in the voting. VMI All-American Stan Okoye was third in the voting with 72 points, followed by Campbell baseball All-American Ryan Thompson (69 points). High Point track All-American Dakota Peachee received 38 points to round out the top five male vote-getters.
Short is the second softball player to win the Conference’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year award, as she received 81 points and six first-place votes. She is also the first student-athlete to win the honor in her school’s first year as a Big South member. Short finished ahead of Coastal Carolina track All-American Erica Peake, who was second with 67 points. Winthrop basketball player Dequesha McClanahan was third with 56 points, followed by Liberty volleyball player Caroline Douglas (41 points). Radford soccer player Che’ Brown finished fifth in the voting with 38 points.
Maysonet was the runner-up for the Walter Payton Award as National Player of the Year. A consensus First-Team All-American, he posted one of the greatest seasons by a rusher in school and Big South history with a single-season record 1,964 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns. He finished the season with a Big South-record 23 touchdowns and a League-record nine multi-TD games. Maysonet ranked third in FCS in rushing (151.08 per game) and fourth in all-purpose yards (178.15). He had nine 100-yard rushing games -- including a League-record three 200-yard performances. A unanimous selection in repeating as the Big South’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2012, Maysonet tied the Big South record with five-straight multi-TD games to close out the regular-season.
Maysonet was also the first player in Big South history to reach 1,000 rushing yards in his teams’ first seven games, as well as the first in League annals with a touchdown in every regular-season contest. Maysonet rushed for 921 yards and 11 touchdowns in six Big South games to help the Seawolves claim their fourth-straight Big South championship. He was also the first player in the Conference record books to record more than 2,000 all-purpose yards during the regular-season (2,046). This past season, Maysonet rushed for 220 yards in Stony Brook’s win at Army, a career-high 233 at Coastal Carolina and 212 at Presbyterian. He was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent and recently joined the Cleveland Browns.
Short highlighted her lone season in the Big South with Third-Team All-America accolades from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The southpaw was also an All-Southeast Region First-Team member, the Big South Player of the Year, an All-Conference First-Team honoree and an All-Tournament Team honoree after helping the Lancers win the Big South Softball Championship in their first season as Conference members. Short finished the season as the Big South’s third-leading hitter with a .420 batting average, as well as second in the League in slugging percentage (.824), home runs (18), total bases (145) and walks (40). She ranked first with a .527 on-base percentage and five sacrifice flies. In Conference games, Short batted .443 -- the third-highest average against Big South opponents -- and was tops in slugging percentage (.986) and runs batted in (35).
As a pitcher, Short closed the year with an 18-8 record and a 3.07 ERA. In the final national rankings, she was 12th in runs batted in per game (1.13) and sacrifice flies (5), 14th in slugging percentage (.824), 17th in home runs (18), 33rd in batting average (.420) and 41st in home runs per game (0.3). Short concluded her Longwood career as the school’s all-time leader in at-bats (636), hits (248), RBI (197), runs scored (172), home runs (55), walks (106) and games played (218).
In March 2000, the Big South Conference Executive Committee voted to create an annual Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year award, and name the male award in honor of former Charleston Southern Athletic Director Howard Bagwell, who was one of the founders of the Big South Conference. The annual candidates for the award consist of the Players of the Year from each sport for the season most recently completed.
