If you really want to let them have it, get the government fully involved.

Have the federal and state governments decide that if your athletic program has certain characteristics then sports as a business becomes your primary mission instead of academics. This would mean you are no longer eligible to be accredited and no longer eligible for federal or state education funding unless you divest yourself of that athletic program.

Not going to happen, but would definitely present colleges with a clear choice to make.
