McNeese State's Bryan Smith earns defensive honor after record game.

FRISCO, Texas - McNeese State's Bryan Smith set a Southland Conference and school record with five quarterback sacks on Saturday to earn the league's Defensive Player of the Week honor in football. Sam Houston State's Wade Pate passed for 259 yards and three touchdowns in the Bearkats season opener to garner the offensive honor. McNeese's Steven Whitehead used a punt return for a touchdown to pick up the special teams' honor. Following is a look at their performances.

It was nice to see Sam Houston State come out and take care of business Saturday in the season opening rout of Arkansas-Monticello, but I’d be lying if I said I walked away from Bowers Stadium completely satisfied.

I had a feeling in my gut like when you are anxiously waiting for a new move to come out, then you see it, and it was good — but not exactly what you had in mind.

Do you know what I’m talking about?

Anyway, I was pleased to see the offense come out and score on its first two possessions. I really thought the Bearkats needed to make a strong statement early in the game to show they have put last season’s 3-7 fiasco behind them.

I think the Kats defense was even more impressive than the offense...

You see those passing stats by the UAM passers? Wow! Three of 16 passing? One of those was a trick play (HB pass). Take that out and the yardage from it (40 yards) and Kats really shut'em down...
