Division 1 yes of course. But all time at NDSU, that's debatable. Back in the 80's we won 3 out of 4 National Championships, and the fourth we played in the championship game. We also won 5 out of 8 National Championships between 83 and 90.

I just want to point out that we haven't had a too shabby Division 1 start either. Everyone said we were going to fail, including many of this board.

I'll agree this was a heck'uva run...lets call it LU's "league-affiliated" dominance.

But as an independent, and crossing-over 2 different divisions, the '77-'80 teams went 39-9-2, and won the '77 D2 NC while making it to the 1AA Championship Game in '79 and Semi's in '80. I'm biased, and agree that it makes for good debate, but bringing home the gold, deep playoff advancement in 3 of 4 years, and an arguably more difficult 4 years of regular season games has the baby boomers era edging out the yoots.

It wasn't my team, unfortunately it was App state against my team, and it was more than just a run. I was there in Boone and saw it with my own eyes. Armanti Edwards made our defense look like tissue paper. I believe this also made the ESPN Sports Center highlights. Incredible!!!

LOL OK, so I should have checked the thread first. Nevertheless, that play deserves another look. As for our team run, our 1991 squad won 2 games in the playoffs beating New Hampshire and James Madison. We then lost to Youngstown state in a winter blizzard on the Penguin's field. We have all thought that if that game had been played in B'ham, Samford could VERY possibly have gone on to become the NC that year. In 1992, we returned to the playoffs, but got clobbered by Delaware. Unfortunately, we are still looking for a return to the playoffs and significance. Actually this could be our year.

Probably 1983 - 89 when we went 70-10 averaging 10 wins per season and 1 loss. Winning the NAIA two times (tied games both teams won) before winning it outright in 1991. That 7 years really helped UCA vault into division II and now division I in such a SHORT time. Players such as Willie Davis, Monte Coleman and Tyree Davis helped that cause.

The best ten years was 1964-1973: 90-10-1 .896 (1981-1990: 111-16-2 .868 with 5 trophies might trump that, depending on who you ask.)

I have high hopes for 2010-2019 though but there's a long way to go before it equals

We had a 6-1 run vs. FBS from 1988-1992. It was nice because I was there for 3 of those years. The Charlie Taaffe wishbone was a thing of beauty.

Wofford had a 12 win season in 2003. In doing research, i saw another fun fact: In 1948, the team set a national record which still stands-- the team went 4-0-5. Those five ties are the most in a season in history.

For Lafayette College, it was 1896, of course - the first of three National Championships for the Leopards (who at the time were simply "the Maroon").

Ahh, I remember it well. :) Unbeaten and underscored upon under Head Coach Parke Davis, except for a 6-4 victory over Penn (in the Fielding Yost game). First ever non-Ivy college football champions. To this day, 120 years and 90 games later, Penn has never forgiven us for that.

1933 7-0 Undefeated and unscored upon. Season score 73-0 in 7 games.
1953 9-0 Undefeated. Season score 395-65
1972 8-1-1 Undefeated in regular season with a tie at Fresno State. Lost to North Dakota in Camellia Bowl.
1980 10-3 Run to D-II National Championship with win over 1980 Div 1-AA National Champ Boise State. Losses to D-1A CS Fullerton and Fresno State.
1972-1979 D-II Cal Poly 6-1-1 run against Div 1A Fresno State including 4-0 1973-1976.

98-01 makes an argument for us as well. Two more titles, another NC appearance, and a semi-final appearance. The 01 semi loss was our defeat at Paulson during those years. 52-7 overall, and a 29-3 SoCon mark with two outright title and two shared ones. Was a great time to be a student!

Who said you would not do well? I remember UND and NDSU being very good in D2. I am surprised UND hasn't done a little bit better but I fully expect SD and ND schools to do fairly well unless these recruiting services start hitting their recruiting areas hard to help uncover kids and we see your top recruits start getting BCS offers from more than just Minnesota and you lose them. NDSU is one of 3-4 current FCS programs who I think could succeed in FBS. Give NDSU 22 more scholarships to pluck the top players UND, USD, SDSU, and then beat out some more Big Ten schools and they could have a solid FBS program.

For Dartmouth, pre-FCS it was 1969-73. Five consecutive Ivy championships (a feat matched only by Penn in the 1980s). Highlighted by an undefeated team in 1970 that won the Lambert Trophy.

Since FCS, it was 1990-96. If you throw out 1994 in which we had many terrible injuries, we won titles in 1990, 1991, 1992 (last Ivy three peat) and 1996 (10-0). 1993 and 1995 we took second place and were still alive going into the last game of the season.

Pre-FCS, probably Dr Eddie Anderson's first stint at Holy Cross from 1933-1939. The 1938 team ended up #9 in 1938, highlighted by a 29-6 win over Georgia at Fitton Field.
