View Full Version : Race to the bottom -_- Any hope for the bottomfeeders

Is there any news coming out these schools that give them hope that they will improve next year? (New Coach, Football Field, Uniforms, recruiting class, ect)
Also, Is there team among that this list that has hidden potential to possible win their conference title or at least break even.

Personally, The only one with potential is South Dakota. At least they kept it close for a few games and showed basic competence.

Western Carolina and Nicholls I can't comment sense I have noever seen them play.
Idaho is possibly the Worst Defense in all FCS. I'm not sure if its even possible to fix it. Seem like the DC and the students need to leave the program and get some Walk-ons to take their place. I think they would get a extra win or two because of it.
Rhode Island seemed to suck since the beginning of time. Honestly I could see them go 4-8 if their offense was just competent. To put it in perspective ODU was in range of matching their entire offensive output for the season with the UNH game alone..
Savannah St seems to accepted its role as a FBS ho. I think they need to just drop to Div 2 or 3 already and save the embarrassment.

Nicholls State may escape the cellar due to new additions to the Southland Conference. Houston Baptist will begin a new football program and Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian move up from D2.

Nah. ACU will probably be better than Nicholls right away. At least, that's what I feel. HBU and UIW have a pretty tough road ahead of them, however.

Savannah State will not win more than 3 games this coming season. Although they have not improved by much, if any, the question will be is Morgan State even worse.

It has to be ISU. You are correct- Idaho is still FBS in football but Big Sky for everything else. My guess is after about two years as an independent they will join the BSC for football too.

At least 5 of South Dakota's losses were by 7 points or less (3 by 3 points). I would bet they will be much better in 2013.

But, but... PAUL PETRINO!!!

At least, that's what the Vandal fans are clinging on to right about now. I'm sure he's a step up from their past few coaches, but reality is eventually going to smack Idaho in the face. I think being an independent will work out quite well in the next one or two seasons, but it will eventually be an unsustainable practice.

Yah, I just don't see how they will get enough home games with that small stadium. At least they have a place to go with the Big Sky- I wonder about how many choices NM State has.

I wonder if they've talked to Wazzou about sharing their stadium. I'm pretty sure they've played home games there in the past. Anything's better than the Kibbie Dome, and Wazzou benefits from keeping a highly-beatable FBS team in its back yard.

I know of once for sure and probably at least twice. I think that the two schools are only twelve miles apart.

Probably the Big Sky or Southland. Honestly, the Southland is a little closer concerning overall travel cost ,but the Big Sky might benefit more by having the FCS teams split into North and South Divisions to lower the travel cost across the entire conference.. Not to mention, this could mean the Big Sky could flood the playoff field like the CAA teams used to.

I think that they could fit into the Big Sky since Northern Arizona is south- just not as far as Las Cruces. I haven't heard any rumors on them or Idaho for quite a while. I think being an independent- unless you are Notre Dame, Army or Navy has got to pose scheduling problems- and that BYU won't stay an independent for long.

Nicholls was a playoff team in the late 2000s.

The problem is that they want to be an option team but lack the talent to do it.

I have spent some time lurking on the New Mexico State Scout fan forum lately since Abilene Christian is scheduled to play them this fall. Not only do they not see themselves moving down to an FCS conference, fans do not believe they should "settle" for a bottom feeder FBS conference such as the Sun Belt. Their preference is the Mountain West and they are willing to settle for Conference USA.

Meanwhile, they seem content to remain in the WAC for basketball and play as a fb independent. They have put together an impressive schedule as an independent. 7 Home games against Boston College, Minnesota, Rice, San Diego State, UTEP, Idaho and ACU. Away games include Texas and UCLA.

Unfortunatedly for Western Carolina, with the exception of Elon every SoCon team appears to be improving. Playing 3 FBS and away at GaSo and App it appears Mars Hill is their only chance for a win even if they are a little better. Year two of the new coaching staff is going to be tough.

I think they'll beat Elon and surprise one other SoCon team this year. That QB is dangerous and every team in this league has been sleeping on the CantAmounts for years. Spier is a good recruiter too, so things will get better for Western as time goes on, especially when App and Stink leave.

Of all the mentioned bottom feeders in the thread, Western has the potential to turn it around IMO.

I'm not too worried about South Dakota. They're just out of their transition to D1, recruiting should improve. Most games were close, they'll start winning soon enough. They did beat the PL champ though, maybe they just need to move conferences.

Wasn't URI operating under full scholarships this past year? I thought they had dipped down with eyes towards being in the NEC? And are they ramping that back up with the plans to stay in the CAA?

They did dip down ,but their is no word yet on them increasing scholarships again. Maybe Maine and UNH should teach RI how to recruit up north before they shoot back up to the scholarship limit to end this endless cycle of abuse.
