The Sam Houston State offense struggled with third-down situations, and the defense made too many costly mistakes during Saturday’s intrasquad scrimmage at Bowers Stadium.
A year ago, the Bearkats finished dead last in the Southland Conference in third-down conversion percentage, so head coach Todd Whitten wanted to make sure that area was addressed in fall camp.
But except for a handful of plays and several defensive penalties, SHSU looked like the team that only converted 30 percent of its third-down chances in 2005.
“Any time you scrimmage for third downs, the entire day you are in the toughest situations,” Whitten said after his team’s second and final intrasquad workout prior to the Sept. 9 opener at home against Arkansas-Monticello.
